“Nice dinner, dessert let it down”
Reviewed 17 January 2014

My husband and I ate here using a smartbox voucher that we had. Our starters and main courses were tasty but unfortunately the desserts let it down. The sticky toffee pudding was very disappointing, as was the banana toffee cheesecake. I think this was mainly caused by the toffee sauce - it was really treacly and not nice! Would have been disappointed if we'd have been paying £5 or whatever it was for each dessert.

We got a very good B&B deal for two rooms for two nights and were upgraded to Connoisseur rooms. We have stayed here many times and it used to be THE place to stay in Newcastle. The rooms were fine but neither had any heating. We fiddled with the controls, hoping it would start and we went for a bar snack. Very disappointing (and expensive) fish and chips. Back in the rooms there was still no heating so we had to ring down and ask for heaters to be brought up. it took quite a while to warm the rooms and it really took the edge off a nice stay. This happened to us once before at the Copthorne but that was over a year ago and we had assumed the problem would have been sorted out by now. The staff were lovely as was the breakfast and we would have really enjoyed our stay if the rooms had been heated.

Thank you for your e-mail. Sorry to learn of the issue experienced with bedroom temperature during your stay. The hotel heating system had a £250,000 upgrade in 2013, so such an isolated issue should not have occurred. Any such issues would normally be actioned at the time by the hotel team. I do hope you will consider staying with us again.

We had arrived early, around 11am, having just disembarked from the Amsterdam DFDS ferry. We had arrived by car and had simply expected to park the car in the hotel car park and return to check in later. However the receptionist, Abby, was superb. She offered to find us available rooms, a double for us and a twin for the kids. Within minutes we were relaxing in our rooms somewhat unexpectedly.

The room was on the 4th floor and had large floor to ceiling windows with a great view of the Tyne. The bed was large and extremely comfortable. The beds and carpets had recently been replaced and a new flat screen TV installed. The hotel appears to be going through a refurbishment programme and while it looks a little tired from the road side, do not be put off this is a great hotel in a great location.

My wife and daughter made use if the pool area which they enjoyed although did comment that it would benefit from part of the upgrading programme.

Overall a great room for a great price, £51, room only for a 4 star hotel in a very central location.

Room Tip: All room offers good views of the Tyne.

My partner and I stayed at the Copthorne last weekend. We had driven up from Kent to take my son back to University and chose the hotel for its location and that fact that it has a pool - a swim seemed a good way to unwind after a long drive! The car park is next to the hotel with a door into the hotel lobby. The charge for parking is £5 per night.
The hotel is a 15 minute walk from the town centre and easy to find. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful as are the staff in the restaurant and the bar. We ate in the restaurant and the food was good although the restaurant decor is impersonal has seen better days.
Our room was a good size and clean. We had a lovely view over the river and the bridges but once again, the decor in our room was dark and old fashioned. The bathroom was clean, the over the bath shower was powerful, but the bathroom was small and dated. The taps in both the basin and the bath didn't turn off easily.
The bed was a double but seemed to sink slightly in the middle so I spent both nights trying to sleep on 6 inches of bed whilst my partner slept soundly having rolled into the nice comfy 'bit' in the middle!
He used the gym but said it was very small but enjoyed the sauna and I used the pool which was clean and very nice albeit small (14 metres). We both used the steam room which was well lit but clean. The changing rooms were clean but, once again, a bit dated.
We enjoyed our stay but the hotel would benefit from a thorough refurbishment. There was a note in our room explaining that there will be improvements, i.e., carpets, TVs and beds, etc., and we will look forward to using the hotel again when those improvements have been put in place.

Stayed here for the past twelve years or so every New Year whilst visiting family. After several years of sliding downhill, hotel is finally upgrading some facilities. Rooms are newly carpeted and beds very comfortable indeed, also new flat screen TVs (about time I hear you cry!). Service needs to improve to become genuine 4 star and staff need to up their game, main foyer could be grand and welcoming but often atmosphere lacking - too sparten. They do have a fire in the lobby with seating - why is this seldom lit? If broken why not repair it? Leisure facilities - great asset to have a pool but why put up with truly terrible programme of repairs and decor which do hotel no favours. However, and above all else, what hotel does have is location. Each room has river view and location is fantastic for quay side, Baltic and Sage etc. Also great restaurants (some of the v best) within walking distance. So on balance, yes I'll keep returning - rooms are now good, clean & well furnished - just the bathrooms to go!

My Husband and I usually stay in the Hilton for New Years Eve, for the Gala Ball. However we thought we would have a change & after ringing around and checking out the website for a few local hotels we decided that the Copthorn sounded like a good alternative venue.

We arrived to check in & the desk Staff were so lovely, they even gave us a free room upgrade. The room was fantastic, Spotlessly clean & with a fantastic view of the river & bridges in this great city. There even is a small balcony to the suite. The leisure facilities were very good with a small pool & gym etc.

The room for the dinner was lovely & the Food Manager Keenan Ozkan was very attentive & charming. He even remembered us the next morning at breakfast. The food was gorgeous & well presented. We even wandered along to see the Fireworks on the Quayside which is only minutes away..

Very happy & we will return, highly recommended. Good value for money.

Room Tip: River view rooms quieter & much better view.

It is regretable that the nominal £5.00 overnight secure car parking charge has clearly impacted so heavily on your personal perception of the hotel. Every comparable city centre hotel in Newcastle charges for overnight parking, with ours the cheapest (highest is £18.00).
