Copthorne Hotel Newcastle
Reviewed 3 August 2010

On a arrival at the hotel first impressions were good, until we booked in the receptionist was extremely rude and unhelpful. Our room was nice and spacious with a view of the river tyne, however the hot water did not work so we had to pack up and move to another room which was again nice with a river view. Breakfast on the first morning was a buffet breakfast which was below average stanard as most of cooked food looked like it had been sitting there to long and some of the food was not cooked fully, although the restaurant staff are quite helpful and friendly. Overall I would say the hotel is more of a 2-3 star hotel and not a 4 star.

I booked through booking .com and was dissapointed when the hotel rang me direct to say my credit card did not go through, this has happened to others i believe, there was a full amount on my card as i pay off what i spend every month, my card company said it was their machine, they wanted me to pay using another credit card, i refused and said i would pay in cash on arrival and eventually they said they would hold the room , i was so embarrassed!!
i book hotels frequently without such problems.
This hotel was 20 mins away from airport by taxi £18 or train £2.90, located on the quay the views were lovely.
lots of steps up to the centre 5 mins, very steep but a good workout did not bother me it was easier then going round the houses in a taxi costing extra monies!!!!!
the room was river view i walked in and said wow!!!! man was fishing outside!!!
big double room, clean, tv etc... normal stuff.
spa and pool on 1st floor, freindly staff.
but spa was closed on sat 31st due to staff shortage, i was only there for one night!!!
gutted!!!!
i arrived at 08.30 as i flew in from london, and a friend had let me down by not coming so i had time to kill, they let me check in , i was sooooo happy, as i was tired from travelling and normal check in on sat is 16.00, i was lucky!!!!
nice bar , quiet location which i loved as the hen party stayed at jurys inn which was rowdy, i did try to persuade them to come to copthorne but they would not pay the extra amount.
it was well worth just over £101 including an amazing breakfast!!!!!
i will be coming again but dubious about the credit card thing!!!! and my partner will be staying here soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
more like a 5*.
best hotel i have stayed in for years!!!
didnt realise they have one in dubai, i already booked my hotel for nov, but will check it out for my next visit to dubai!!

You would think you would be able to order anything off menu, but you are allowed 15 pounds each and have to pay extra for veg or chips.etc. Then bill was wrong - make sure you check it. bedroom furniture very dusty. Not the 4star hotel id imagined. Good weatherspoons next door! Had to pay 5 pound for parking in hotel aswell.

We were very disappointed to read your comments regarding the housekeeping issues you have highlighted and assure you that this is not indicative of our normal standard of service.

We are also very sorry for the error with the billing, this has highlighted a training requirement which will be addressed immediately.

With regards to car parking our charges are in line with other hotels in the City, we are sorry you were disappointed with this.

Thank you once again for your feedback which is very much appreciated.

I travelled with 5 friends for a girls weekend away. We booked this hotel through a tour operator as we got a great deal with train from London, and this was on a B&B basis, with dinner the first night. Also, we liked that it had leisure facilities.

The check in was quick & efficient and we were in our rooms shortly after arriving. The rooms were spacious and clean & the beds were very comfortable. We were on the 1st floor so we has a small balcony which meant we could air the rooms easily. The bathroom was a bit small but was clean - the only issue we had was that the shower was a bit too hot even on it's lowest setting.

Our deal included dinner in the restaurant on the first night & the food was excellent - I was expecting that we would have a different menu as it was a deal but we got the full menu - we thought that both dinner menus provided excellent value - shame that was not reflected in the room service menu - £5.50 for beans on toast!. Our deal also included breakfast which was plentiful, even towards the end of service, although on our first morning, we did have to keep asking for tea & coffee due to having to find our own table & then to get the attention of the serving staff.

The staff behind the bar were very friendly & as efficient as they could - ie not enough staff for the amount of people in the bar.

We all used the lesiure facilities and had no problems booking treatments - again all the staff there were very helpful & friendly.

Location wise, this hotel was excellent for the nightlife - near enough to be short walking distances but far enough that when back at the hotel, we weren't disturbed. Although, when we went out in the day, there was a steep climb to the train but that sorted our workout for the day!!

All in all, we had a great weekend at this hotel & would certainly stay there again as it ticked all the boxes.

Having read various reviews about this hotel, we were a little dubious about booking it, as we were attending a wedding reception there.

I have to say, the hotel staff were amazing and the place was far better than we expected.

The room we had overlooked the Tyne, a little strange getting changed in the room with the curtains open, but great views along the river.

We would have liked the aircon to work better as all these large hotels seem to have rooms which are too hot, but at least we had a large fan.

It would also be nice to have 5ft beds as the rooms are large enough to accomodate these.

As I said the staff in the restaurant were superb, not only for the wedding breakfast, but for breakfast the following morning. The bar staff were also very friendly.

All in all a good experience!

The location of this hotel is good. It is right on the river which means you have really nice views from your room. You can exit the hotel from the riverside and walk along the river, see the bridges, etc. It's lovely. The other side of the hotel isn't as pretty as it is on the main road. Some steep steps lead you towards the city centre. It is only a ten minute walk and probably would be shorter than that if it wasnt for the fact that it is all uphill. The hotel is also a short walk from the Metro Radio Arena which was handy for us as we were in Newcastle for a concert there. There is parking directly underneath the hotel which is handy but it will cost you.

The hotel is not five star, it's not stunning or luxurious but it is a good sturdy hotel with high standards. The rooms are spotlessly clean and tidy. They are also very large. We had a double bedroom which was nice and had pleasant views of the river. The bed was comfortable. The room temperature was good and could be easily adjusted. The windows didnt open very far but the air con worked just fine. The decor was a little old fashioned but as the room was clean and large and had all the amenities we required this didnt really matter.

We didnt eat at the hotel but we had drinks at the bar which was nice. The seating area is comfortable and we didnt experience any problems. It made a nice evening to exit the hotel at the front and walk along the riverside to the bars and restaurants. I would highly recommend an Italian restaurant called Sabatini which is only a ten minute walk from the hotel and is excellent. Do NOT go to an Indian restaurant called Saffron, it was the worst restaurant I've ever been to. In general I would avoid Indian restaurants in Newcastle as none were up to scratch.

The only problem we had was when we checked in and attempted to pay for our room. The woman at reception said that my card had been rejected even though I knew there was more than enough money in the account. My partner's card was also rejected even though he had plenty money in his account too which suggested to us that the problem was with the card machine but the receptionist insisted it worked fine. So we had to go to a cash machine and pay by cash which was hassle but worked out fine in the end.

I would recommend the hotel but don't expect a five star establishment. It's a nice, middle of the road hotel with little wrong with it, other than the slightly dated decor, and unless you want luxury this hotel should do you just fine.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your comprehensive review on your recent stay in Newcastle.

We are delighted you enjoyed your stay in our hotel and the Quayside location with everything that the area has to offer. You are quite right in your comment that we are not a five star hotel, we have four star status; we are very pleased to learn that you found our standards to be high, the bedroom comfortable, spotlessly clean and tidy with pleasant views of the river.

We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to you and your partner at check-out; we have contacted our service provided who will ensure that our systems are working efficiently, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

We hope that the concert at the Metro Radio Arena was everything you hoped for and that you will return to Newcastle again sometime soon.

Yours sincerely

Read some reviews of this hotel after I had booked and was a bit worried as my friends are a bit fussy.Greeted by friendly staff who did their best to get our rooms a bit closer together,we found all the staff friendly and very helpful.Hotel reception and Bar was very clean and nicely presented.Food and room service was excellent. Our rooms had a lovely view of the River Tyne and were very clean and nicely presented.Breakfast was also very good, great selection and full english was also available. We were in Newcastle on a party weekend, and found it to be in a great location for bars, clubs and shops, also lovely and quiet when we wanted relaxation time.Room was large, airy and bright, ironing board and iron included(a must for us ladies).Could nt fault the place and much nicer than staying at a premier or travel inn style hotel in the centre in our opinion, would definitely stay there again.
