“New Years Eve”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 January 2013

We stayed here on New Years Eve, the evenings entertainment was excellent, the food etc. The hotel room was dated and the bathroom came out of the 70s. We had to move rooms as we were above the pub and the noise was unbearable. The new room was better and quieter but still could do with updating. I am hoping that this has been done for next year as we would go back for the New Years Eve entertainment.

Our second use of the Peel Hotels offers. £99 for dinner bed and breakfast for two people for two nights. For that price, expectations are not very high, but this hotel was very good! Executive room that was a little small but well equiped. Free Wi-Fi throughout. Nice bathroom with very powerful shower. The thinnest and narrowest toilet paper I have ever seen, however! Good location in a residential suberb. Lots of student rooms around, which may account for the reports of noise from other reviewers. Excellent three course dinner each night and a reasonable choice of wines. Breakfast was buffet with wide choices but lukewarm at best. Very friendly staff. Quite handy for city centre. Pleased overall!

Very clean and tidy hotel, excellent breakfast and very helpful staff. Pleasant area and some marvellous pubs within walking distance.Easy to get into the centre of Newcastle from the hotel, either by bus or Metro. Plenty of parking at the rear of the hotel which is a plus. like a lot of other people we got an upgrade to an executive room which was ideal.

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent and well furnished

Stayed here to see Michael McIntyre at the metro arena. We normally stay at the Hilton or Copthorne as it is within walking distance, however didn't want to pay £300+ for the night so opted for jesmond as was £99 b&b. when we pulled up it has its own car park which is free: perfect!
Reception are was very clean as were the receptionists. They were extremely friendly and happy. At time of booking I requested a back of building room away from the main road and we were granted a lovely room on the second floor. Little bits of a track to get there but didn't care as we had been upgrade free to a deluxe room. It was huge and very welcoming!
Breakfast the following morning was adequate and I will definitely be booking here again for our next trip to Newcastle.
Love the fact it is on the Main Street for jesmond and joined on the Billabong bar which is reasonably priced yet once in the hotel the noise is little to none.

I've read a couple of reviews for the Caledonian from stag groups that weren't happy with the hotel or the staff but it was the opposite for our group. We were a party of 30-something males and the hotel was spot on. Friendly staff, twin room was large, bathroom was clean and the shower was top notch. We had a corking night in Newcastle and most of us managed to get up for the breakfast which was miles better than I was expecting.

There are some comments saying the rooms are slightly dated but if you want a la mode facilities then pay boutique hotel prices. All our rooms were clean, warm had all the usual tea/coffee shennanigans and were very pleasant indeed.

Check-in and check-out were quick and the young ladies on reception were very nice indeed.

Highly recommended.

Myself and the wife stopped here for a Saturday night stop over. We were due to see a show at the metro arena but as the city centre hotels were wanting me to take second mortgage out on my home just for the privaledge of staying in the city, we opted for the £79.95 a night Caledonian in Jesmond, booked through Octopus travel.
We got parked no problem and the location of the hotel was first class, right in the heart of Jesmond, right outside a bus stop and only a 10 min walk to the Metro station.
The hotel itself seemed quite modern, however the bedroom seemed a cross between something out of Austin Powers and the antiques roadshow. Bright blue and orange carpet, awful blue doors, a 7 inch portable tv in the corner of the room, dated furniture. however it was quite large and relatively clean. The bathroom had a heated tower rail that wasn't turned on and the bathroom itself was cold.
I could have forgiven our fluorescent room had we got a decent nights sleep but this for us is what spoiled our stay. Our room 129 was just at the top of the first flight of stairs above the bar and next to a door. We could hear the noise from the drinkers downstairs until the hotel until the early hours of the morning, and when that stopped we got awoken continously by people talking in the corridors and slamming the doors having returned from their night on the tiles. It was a dreadful nights sleep and I'd advise people who are expecting a decent sleep and stopping over on a weekend to pack some ear plugs (or request a quiet room in advance).
Breakfast next morning was very good, a selection of fruits, juices, pastries and toast. Then followed by a self service buffet including eggs, bacon, hash browns, sausages, mushrooms, beans and tomatoes.
The dining area where we ate breakfast was very nice, as was the food which was piping hot and of very good quality. The staff in the restaurant where excellent also.
It's just a shame that the noise in the hotel would stop us from returning in the future and as a result for future trips to Newcastle I'd probably either take out the second mortgage and stay in the city, or try and get a room in the Best Western New Kent hotel in Jesmond which was much more quiet on an evening.

Room Tip: If not on a stag or hen do and stopping over on a weekend, avoid room 129 and possibly request a qui...

I stayed here for a couple of midweek nights and was generally very happy with this hotel. The rooms were decently sized and the bed massive.

Reception was welcoming and the position of the hotel relative to local amenities and the Metro is brilliant.

My only gripe is the hotel restaurant which is just ok; breakfast is great, but in the evening the food does not warrant the prices being asked.

Far better to sample the other eateries in the neighbourhood as they offer better value for money.

I would definitely stay here again when I am next in Newcastle on business.
