“Negatives far outweigh the positives”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2013

We were in Newcastle for a family party and booked into the Caledonian Hotel for one night.

Positives:-
Check in was quick
The room was clean and comfortable
The bathroom was clean

Negatives:-
There was an incessant and very loud buzzing sound outside our room from approximately 1am to 5am it was disruptive even to me, a heavy sleeper. When I complained to reception they immediately said there was nothing they could do about it but they would send someone to investigate. A couple of minutes later a member of staff came to our door and walked around inside our room - I pointed out that the noise could easily be heard from the corridor - he simply said that there were no available rooms in the hotel so they couldn't move us. We then got another call from reception to say they had turned off some fridges (the noise did not lessen/ stop).

When we checked in we were asked if we wanted breakfast in the morning, it would cost £7.50 per person (we had booked room only), we said we didn't think so and that we'd decide in the morning, no further information was given by the receptionist at this time. The following morning we decided to have the hotel breakfast as we were tired from lack of sleep and couldn't be bothered hunting for somewhere to eat. We were told when we went to the restaurant that the breakfast would now cost us £12.95 per person as we hadn't booked a day in advance, something we had not been advised of when checking in. We went elsewhere.

The shower did not get above a lukewarm temperature.

It had snowed the night before and hotel staff had not cleared any sort of pathway to and from the reception, making it unsafe to enter and exit.

Visited Tuesday 26/02/13@ 3pm. We didn't stay in the hotel, we simply had a Champagne afternoon tea for two using a Groupon voucher.

I'm in a wheelchair, we parked at the back of the hotel and they have a ramped entrance for disabled access.

The dining room was peaceful and had six other couples in. The music was unobtrusive and managed to cover the hammering from outside as there seem to be works going on in the hotel lobby.

The champagne was pleasant and the staff serving us very friendly. The afternoon tea was presented on a three tiered stand consisting off: 3x3 finger sandwiches (Egg, Ham & Salmon), 4x dainty cakes, 2x fruit scones and 2x cheese scones.

The average rating is because the food itself was just 'average'. I've certainly been presented with worse food but I've also been presented with better. It just seemed a little lacking in imagination.

But, the staff themselves were really nice, attentive and friendly.

A comfortable hotel close to the Metro and the city centre, executive room with a great bathroom and also good food. The dining room service was first class.
This hotel was ideally situated for a weeend in " Toon " , Jesmond is a lively area with tree lined streets. Had a great stay.

Room Tip: Executive rooms are the best.

Nice public areas and great base for Jesmond and Newcastle. Service is good - Rooms are still dated considering the decor in rest of the hotel which is extremely modern. I really think they should invest some cash in sprucing up some of the rooms. They dont look at all like the pictures but it doesnt put me off staying here as its perfect for a boozy weekend with friends/my husband.
Stayed here three times now - Would stay again!

We did the Groupon Champagne Afternoon Tea and really enjoyed it. The afternoon tea consisted of salmon, ham and egg sandwiches. Each person received a cheese and fruit scone. The scones were served warm and were very nice. The cakes were also lovely.

I was worried about the champagne, given the price but it was lovely. I would definitely recommend and we will be back!

Stayed here with 3 friends as part of my birthday weekend away. The hotel itself is ok - fairly nice reception, pleasant enough staff, kind of central location etc but it isn't really any better than ok - the rooms were adequate for one night but the decor was dated, small tv and the bathrooms were not well equipped i.e. I hate it when they just supply you with one bottle stuck to the wall labelled Showergel/shampoo - how can it be both? I dont want to wash my hair with shower gel! but that's a personal thing, and I know if I want luxurious toiletries I should either bring my own or book a more expensive hotel.
The price was ok for what we got I guess and it was good that there was a free hotel car park and we got a space no problem. It's clearly very popular with stag and hen parties so there was a little bit of noise once we came in on the Saturday night, but generally nothing to complain about. Just average.
