“Great girly weekend”
Reviewed 5 June 2014 via mobile

Me and the girls recently spent a relaxing weekend in Newcastle, staying here and we couldn't be happier with the service provided. After a long day shopping it wa the perfect place to come back to for a drink and a natter on before getting ready for a night on the town! If we all manage to get away for a weekend soon we'll most definitely be heading back there, it was ideal.

Thank you for your review from you ladies weekend away shopping. We are not centrally located as you will know so not ideal for the hustle bustle weekend of pubs and clubs but we do offer a relaxing space for discerning groups. Thank you, Norrie Oswald, GM

I stayed here on a coach trip two week ago. hotel nice, big rooms, nice and clean, nice lounge area, but the restaurant let it down, for a four star hotel you should not have to queue for a cup of tea or coffee out of a machine, and the manager in charge was not trained in manners, protocol in waiter service, for reaching over the customer to retrieve crockery and just putting things in front of people without giving notice must be a safety issue, he gave the impression we was not the kind of people he wanted in the hotel. Rest of the staff was very helpful, friendly and considerate in their job which helped to off set this man. would look forward to staying here again though.

Thank you for your posting Phillip W after your recent coach trip. Your positive feedback re the team and our facilities is particularly appreciated. The comments re restaurant service will be dealt with in private and I do appreciate your feedback - there was a manager or myself on duty throughout your stay and we would have welcomed the chance to speak with you in person, during your stay. Thank you again, Norrie Oswald, General Manager

I took a group of 43 people to stay at this hotel for 4 nights. Reception staff were courteous but had little knowledge of our accommodation needs. Rooms and cleanliness were very good as were the public rooms but our stay was completely tainted by the dining experience. The food itself was acceptable though very limited and on two nights they ran out of requested desserts. Breakfast food was very good.. The restaurant was very understaffed and the restaurant manager, made himself look busy while doing very little. It seemed that no direction was given to staff and they wandered around aimlessly constantly disappearing for long periods and being very slapdash with service. I have stayed in many hotels with my group over the past 14 years and this was the first time that we did not have teapots, milk , sugar, butter and preserves plus a waste tub at the table, Queing at a machine to get water to put a tea bag in or coffee from a machine is not our idea of, as they class themselves, a full service hotel. Prior to our arrival we had furnished the hotel with room requirements and a restaurant seating plan and had been assured that these would be met. The requests we had made for ground floor rooms or no stairs had not been adhered to in several cases and with regards to the restaurant seating plan, the restaurant manager denied any knowledge until shown a copy.He promised from the secondt night all would be as planned. What a waste of breath, throughout the holiday nothing changed. This hotel needs to totally review it's restaurant arrangements if it wants to attract groups. I certainly would not recommend it to anyone.

Dear mollieandderek,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your stay. It is unfortunate the restaurant service prevented you from fully enjoying your time at the hotel. We are confident the necessary adjustments will be made, in order to achieve complete guest satisfaction.

Thank you again for your comments, we look forward to serving you in the future.

This hotel's biggest selling point is the lounge bar, near the reception. Very nice relaxed atmosphere, with an interior that is both spacious and home-like. The bar offers varied and reasonably priced menu and the food is outstanding, both in looks and flavours.

Provided you have a car, the hotel is very conveniently located next to a motorway hub. Despite of this busy spot, the room overlooked quiet green fields.

The room was ok. Good bed, convenient furniture and good wifi access, but the bathroom has definitely passed its glory days. Room and hallways generally lack some atmosphere and feel a bit motelish.

Especially motelish is the gym: a bunch of old machines that are crammed into two separate tiny rooms that lack windows.

Overall for me, the great lounge wins it from the atmosphere in the back of the hotel: 4/5 rating.

Thank you for your lovely review and particular appreciation of our newly styled lounge and bar with its food and drinks offering. We are in 16 acres of greenery which can be a welcome sight after hours travelling on the nearby motorways. The bedrooms have started being refurbished with 40 rooms being worked on. The rooms are being completely refreshed with gorgeous new bathrooms, air conditioning, safes and fridges. The furniture is being replaced to finish the rooms to a great standard. The first section of rooms will be available from July/ August with future work planned on the remaining rooms and the upgrade and installation of the leisure facilities. It is a very exciting time for the hotel. Thank you again for your time, Norrie Oswald, General Manager

We need just one night while attending an event nearby and chose Holiday Inn, Newcastle North for its proximity to the A1 as we were due to go further north the next day. Finding it was not straight forward as the postcode takes you to a nearby travel lodge. You need to follow the written instructions on the website. It was a warm day and on arrival at our room we were surprised to find the heating full on and no matter how much we tried, the air con would produce no cool air. The helpful staff found us another room where the air con at least made some attempt to cool the room. Sleeping was not easy as the noise of the air on unit and the heat reminded me of a crossing to Shetland on a ferry 40 years ago! The room and the bathroom were in need of a refurbishment as were the interminably low, long corridors. Breakfast however was a high light, plenty of good quality food on offer but we were glad to move elsewhere after one night.

Thank you for your posting after your recent overnight visit. It's great to read that breakfast was a highlight of your stay with us - it is a great way to start a day. Our bedrooms are midst being refurbished and aircon is one of the main priorities. As work progresses through the hotel all aircon units are being replaced to increase our guests comfort & memories of the Shetland's ferry will be put to rest!

For the purpose of my review bias, for the last 12 years I have stayed approximately 100 nights a year in the Intercontinental / Holiday Inn Group chain.
Date of stay 14th May 2014
My ongoing experience of the hotel is as follows:

1) Arrival was straightforward using the Sat Nav (TOM TOM) instructions
2) On arrival at the hotel the check in staff (Fay & Marian) were extremely pleasant and friendly. However it was noted as a Gold Priority club member I did not receive a complimentary upgrade (which since Holiday Inn changed their membership programme this year is sadly becoming the norm). I did receive access to the wifi and choice of a 300 priority points voucher or alternatively if you wish you may choose the option of a free drink at the bar instead.
3) All area’s including the bedrooms were always well kept, tidy and clean. It was also noted as a loyal priority member I did not receive my complimentary bottle of water and biscuit / snack in my room.
4) My room (room 178) was clean and well maintained, the bathroom a little less so ( See the photos) however it seemed to be styled in the mid 80’s with only a few modern recent alterations which keep it inline with the rest of the brand. As the hotel is one of the older style hotels it is closer to its American cousins in that, the rooms are much larger than normal in this case 2 king beds and plenty of room
5) There is a large free car park which surrounds the hotel
6) Breakfast is an additional fee (£14.95 on the day or £10 booked in advance or voucher purchased at check in) The quality of the breakfast was average for a Holiday Inn ; catering from the full English option to fresh fruit salad and yoghurts, sliced cold cuts and cheese & pastries. It was noted that frozen sliced bread was used instead of fresh un-sliced artisan bread served elsewhere in the chain and that Tea and coffee are served from Holiday Inn Express style vending machine rather than freshly brewed and served.
8) I did not use the evening meal service.
9) I used the gym facilities, which were clean, well maintained and air-conditioned but smaller than other Holiday Inns (I did not use the pool or the spa)
10) Location, The hotel is located just off the A1 which was ideally located for my visit but not for visiting the City center.
11) Check out, was straight forward and hassle free (I was served by Nicola)
In summary the hotel scores 7/10 for an average to good Holiday Inn that just needs some better quality breakfast ingredients to match others in the brand.

Room Tip: Pick a room that faces to the rear as it looks over peaceful grassy meadows

Thank you for your review and highlighting some of the team for special recognition which is always appreciated. I know we have responded on another website re the gold membership benefits and I hope that has clarified the distinction for you. Platinum members receive upgrades if available and bottled water etc as part of their loyalty level status - if you have any queries on a future stay here or elsewhere please ask the receptionist to check your balance and membership level as it can change as you earn and spend points.
The IHG Rewards app is also very handy.
You may have noticed when you were here that we have a quarter of the hotel closed for bedroom refurbishment and I am delighted that our new owners will be continuing with the refurbishment of more bedrooms once this first section has been completed in July/August 2014.
Thank you for your IHG loyalty and keep collecting those amazing loyalty points. kind regards, Norrie Oswald, General Manager

We stayed on a Saturday and enjoyed the out of town location and trips around the south part of Northumberland and the coast. Rather than breakfast we decided to have Sunday lunch and loved the new menu. The steak pie was delicious as was the ham terrine starter. Roast of the day was beef or bacon loin and the bacon was delicious. The rooms were very clean but a bit dated however the staff said 40 rooms were being refurbished. The lounge and bar look lovely. Most of all the staff are local and chatty - just like we like.
