Stayed as part of a tour. The extra I paid for a single room was well worth it. A large double, nicely fitted out and with air conditioning. Everything was clean and well maintained. The food was very good - the fish was fab. The staff were excellent. Only downside - as part of the help yourself breakfast you have to make your own tea and toast which I really hated. I want to sit down and have a large pot of tea put in front of me when I'm staying at a hotel. I would certainly recommend and I wouldnt mind staying there again some time.

We stayed 3 nights at the hotel on a good deal. The hotel itself is pleasant enough, but is obviously a basic place to stay for a short time. The rooms are comfortable, well maintained and reasonably convenient to reception, the bar and the restaurant. The restaurant produces superb food with good friendly service from all the girls employed there. The menu is not too long, but encompasses most tastes, and when ordered arrives well presented and very tasty. I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying on a short basis, and using it as a base for touring National Trust properties as we did.

First the good points. The location of the hotel is good if, like me, you are travelling and need a place to stop to break your journey. (Not so good if you want to go into central Newcastle though). There is plenty of secure parking. The bedrooms were large, spacious and comfortable and the bed in our executive room was massive and the bathroom well equipped. All the staff I encountered were friendly and helpful.

On the downside, the public areas are ghastly. The bar/lounge is basically an extension of the reception area and reminded me of an airport departure lounge with a constant flow of people passing through. Not at all relaxing. The bedroom decor was somewhat dated and the TV was an ancient CRT model which we had to call maintenance to fix because of loose wiring. The main problem with the bedroom however was that of noise. The room was hot initially but when we put the air-con on it was so noisy we had to turn it off again. (you can't open the windows either). Also the extractor fan in the bathroom seemed to stay on all night so we had to shut the bathroom door to deaden the noise. In spite of the double glazing, I could still hear traffic noise, police sirens etc from the nearby A1 and planes coming in to land at the airport which seemed to continue until 2:00 am. Not conducive to a good nights sleep.

Dinner in the restaurant was dreadfully disappointing. The decor was poor, the food was little better than pub grub and the waitresses, although friendly, seemed to lack much training. Breakfast the next day was like a rugby scrum. The hotel seems to cater for coach parties and we arrived at breakfast at 8:00 a.m. just after a coach party of OAP's had arrived which meant having to queue for a table followed by more queuing at the self-service breakfast buffet. The cooked breakfast was mediocre to say the least. Overcooked fried eggs, scrambled egg in a great congealed lump sitting in a pool of liquid, black pudding slices with the texture of a hockey puck. I've had better breakfasts in a transport cafe. In what is presumably an attempt to cut down on staff numbers, you had to get your coffee from a machine (more queuing) and it tasted ghastly.

Sadly, I'll give this hotel a wide berth in future.

Thank you for your constructive feedback. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay here, and have reviewed and actioned your comments accordingly.
1. The public areas are being upgraded in early 2011.
2. The heating system has recently been upgraded.
3. Disappointing restasurant feedback, which is very rare here. Since your visit, however, we have employed and new Restaurant & Bars Manager.
Hope you may re-consider and stay here again in the future.

This hotel is 5 miles from Newcastle as somewhat dated decor with prison style corridors and wings. We booked in January and all our requests as disabled geusts were ignorred .The difference between an executive room and a standard room is a mini bar fridge. This large hotel has no lift and only 4 disabled poorly placed parking spaces. The recepton staff were helpful but the duty manager when we spoke to him was confrontational. The positive points are large rooms with2 double beds .The hotel seems to cater for coach parties ,with the chaos that provides.

Thank you for your constructive feedback. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay here.
1. There are two purpose built DDA rooms on the ground floor, equiped over and above the legal requirements to ensure the maximum comfort of our guests.
2. DDA room requests are always fully granted when made at thje time of booking.
3. The hotel is a two-storey bulding and does not have a lift.
4. The executive doubles differ from the other rooms through having queen size beds, leather shivel chairs, in-room safe, minibar, bathrobes, superior toiletries.
5. We make every effort to balance large and small parties within the hotel at all times, although Sunday breakfast is a challenge in every hotel for the same reason!
I do hope you may consider staying here again.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn on Thursday 2nd September 2010. On arrival check in was excellent and the staff very friendly. Went to the room and it was about 30 degrees so put on the noisy air conditioning. Went down for dinner and food was superb, Asked the waitress what kind of lager they served and was given a Boddingtons. There was no diet lomonade. My wife asked for a Cointreau and was told they didnt serve it. When we went into the bar where the drinks were served from there was Cointreau on the gantry.
Went back to the room about two hours later and the temperature was 25 degrees so we opened the window to try to cool the room down. There was noise all night from people going to the airport and people running up and down the corridor shouting and banging doors. The bed was not comfortable either. It was the worst nights sleep ever BUT if you need something close to Newcastle airport for a few hours then it would suit as you can hear the noise from the aircraft taking off and landing all night

Thank you for your constructive feedback. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay here. Your comments have been reviewed and actioned accordingly. The heating system has been fully upgraded since your stay here. External noise complaints are very rare, with a new double glazing system having been installed throughout all 154 bedrooms only in 2007.

I stayed here from 2nd -5th Sept as my daughter was married here.
The wedding waas well organsied by Jane and lynsey who went out of their way to make everything special, including helping me disguise a singing waiter that we had arranged as a surprise for the bride and groom, even printing a name badge ,hows that for service .
The food quality was good for the wedding and the bar service fast and efficient.
Kay who was there for most of the day and night was terrific.Bar prices were in line with most restaurants, which was a definite plus point for this hotel.
The hotel rooms are of a good standard -good value -I would recommend staying if you are having a function.Very Clean .House keeping ladies always say hello .
Breakfast was a little disorganised at 8am as most people seemed to eat then, often running out of food,Needs a maitre de to co ordinate around this time. The food quality was ok but could have been great with a few tweeks like draining the scrambled egg of its flood of water, but good value for money all the same.
The grounds of the hotel are well kept and the lobby bars well manned ,I would recommed a spa and treatments .
My only gripe is around the reception staff. They appeared quite off hand and didnt appear to listen to guests. On arrival I asked for newspapers however never got,and upon querying this on checkout was told they werent ordered!!!
Overall a good stay and very good value for money.I live in hotels 5 days a week all over the uk and have found this one i would recommend.
