Wanted a city centre hotel with parking and the Surtees fitted the bill
Booked through Booking.com at £71 plus breakfast.
The hotel is just 50 yards from the carpark which offers free parking from 5.00pm to 8.00am, great
The only entrance to the hotel is at the rear and looks more like a night club, the reception was very small and while we waited our turn we noticed chewing gum on the floor and a really old well worn leather chair that had seen better days and a notice, lift out of order.
Our room was on the first floor, quite spacious and looked as if it had recently had a makeover, however not to a very high standard, big cracks in the coving, wallpaper coming away in places, stained chair cushion and guess what another old well worn leather chair, on the positive side the duvet covers and sheets were good, tea and coffee facilities were good. 2 bottles of complimentary water were present plus a mysterious carafe looking bottle which was so tacky we didn't want to touch it.
We were advised beforehand that no double glazing was fitted and it could be noisy, it certainly was right up to 4.00 am
The bathroom again looked newish but not finished, the grout between the mosaic tiles around the bath
was black, sink blocked up,nice hot water but just couldn't work out how to work the shower.
The breakfast room was nice and bright, good selection of food laid out, English breakfast was to order and very nice too.
Would I stay again probably not, I'd pay another £20 and find something smarter

Room Tip: ask for a room at the rear away from the street noise

From walking up to the hotel I was nor impressed there was left over food outside the hotel it was there for from me checking in at 4pm to coming back to the hotel at 11pm. Disgusting! When I checked in the receptionist was not friendly in the slightest and never even smiled.
I booked the deluxe double room, there was nothing deluxe about this room, the couch in the room has seen better days, the bathroom once has damp and they have tried (badly) to cover this up. There was paint specs on the floor so when they redecorate after the damp they never covered anything up.

Morning time! Coffee and tea selection okay just not enough milk or sugar, minor issue. But the iron! Dangerous the iron leaks water down onto the wire of the iron, also it leaked water all over the shirt I was ironing so I had to then use the hairdryer to try dry the shirt off. (Which done nothing as it was still wet when it was put on)

All in all I will never be staying in the hotel again. Most definitely not worth £79 a night!

I've been to Surtees hotel from 8th to 12th of September. The price is about 75£ per night. The hotel is very noise because there is no soundproofing. Moreover furniture is very shabby. The elevator didn't work all time long. Passages are very narrow. Breakfast is poor too

The Surtees Hotel is about 4 blocks from the Central Rail Station. Therefore, it an ideal hotel if you travel to Newcastle by train. I had a room with a queen sized bed. The room had a shower/bath, coffee maker and toiletries were included. Wi-Fi worked well
in the room. The hotel provides breakfast and it is served from 0630 hours on the day of the Great North Run.
The hotel in on Dean Street and there are at least 4 Italian restaurants and a number of Indian restaurants only a few hundred meters from the hotel.
The Great North Run is getting bigger every year - 57,000 runners this year. The run took place on September 10. I looked for a hotel the day after the run and many hotels were already fully booked. As the run gets bigger so does the cost of a room and some hotels will only give you a room if you book for two nights (Saturday and Sunday). The Surtees Hotel will hold a room for a small down payment and you only have to stay one night. I booked for next year by phoning the hotel directly. The cost of a room is relatively inexpensive. So if you are thinking of running the Great North Run in 2018, you need to find a room now.

Great location. Staff friendly and helpful. We had triple room, great size however bathroom needs some work. No lift so not suitable for diasabled or people with difficulty using stairs. Hotel has no parking. There is public car park next to it, free after 5 pm. Internet poor connection. Can be noisy outside. Over all it was ok for what we paid for it.

Room Tip: Room to back of hotel may be less noisy.
