“Chic and relaxing”
Reviewed 18 July 2011

This was our choice for the last hotel on a weeks trek across the country from Workington to Tynemouth. We fancied a little bit of luxury in our old hometown. We were not disappointed!

The decor is chic and quirky in the public areas - although the dimmed lights were a little too low perhaps! Staff were friendly (as you'd expect in the North East) and very helpful when needed. You can ask for free milk instead of those nasty little cartons and the coffee in the rooms is a filter bag brand rather than instant.

Rooms are comfortable with heating and cooling, plenty of pillows, tea/coffee making, mini-bar, DVD player and both wired and wi-fi internet access.

We visited the on-site restaurant both evenings as the weather was poor and we were tired. There is also a bar which attracts non-residents as much as guests, there are great views of the Millennium Bridge and parts of the Quayside from the bar - great for people watching inside and out.

The hotel is dog friendly except for the restaurant (and spa/gym I'd guess although we did not use these as we'd had enough exercise on our trek). They will also provide dog beds and bowls for a small fee.

It can get a little noisy if you sleep with windows open (or if there are inconsiderate guests on your floor) as this is an area with good night life.

Room Tip: Rooms on the side may be less noisy if you're a light sleeper

Went on good value (sunday night) rate - got room with view (but hard to see out of room the way the chairs and bed are facing)

You know what you get - the early noughties Malmaison thing

Hotel a bit shaby now - but in dark you dont really notice it!

Great location for arts, running et

We came across from Manchester for a graduation. We arrived around 9pm quite weary from the day. The Receptionist asked me for my credit card which I know is standard but then proceeded to tell me that the booking plus an extra £50 would be held against my card until we left. This immediately made me feel untrustworthy and having stayed in many 4 star plus hotels his reaction took me by surprise - i.e its standard so just accept it.
We went to the room which was supposed to be a spacious double which was not the case. We then went to the Brasserie for something to eat although there were only a few people in the Restaurant we were asked to take a sit at the bar until a table was ready. 30mins later my husband went to the desk and it became apparent that they had completely forgot about us and subsequently we ate about 10.30pm!
The following morning was an early start we went to make a drink but there was only one cup - we rang down to Reception but 30mins later no cup had appeared and my husband had to go down and chase it as no one would pick up the phone.

We are extremely disappointed in this whole experience. It was also our birthdays so we wanted a double celebration. I think some of the attitudes of the staff let the hotel down and they need to adapt to the different types of customer. However I would like to point out that as we checked out we had a completely different Receptionist who was extremely helpful and mades us feel as we should have felt from the beginning of our stay.

I was visiting Newcastle with friends from different parts of the country- for a pop concert that was being held not far away. We arrived after a 3 hour journey, to friendly and welcoming staff. (However, make sure that you have your credit card ready as you can't check in without one! We were fine as I had mine, but a couple of friends had left their handbags in their car boot, ready for taking to our concert. The carpark is a multi-storey and they were parked on the top floor of it so it would have been a pain to go back to the car, with us being in a rush. They had to put their luggae in my room.)
The hotel decor is dark purple and very modern. I really liked this look- but imagine it wouldn't be to everyone's taste. Put it this way- it's very modern. We were very pleased with our spacious room, spacious bed and lovely bathroom. The bed was also extremely comfortable. The mini-bar and snacks were of a good selection and prices on these were not too bad. There was a good iron and hairdryer in the room. Also, there were products in the bathroom that you are able to take away with you. The view from my room was of the building next door! I bet a room facing the river would be really nice, as the hotel is next to the Millenium Bridge. In fact, the location is great. On Sunday morning, we were next to the riverside market, which was great. Breakfast was not included in our room price (£120 on the Saturday we went). breakfast was about £15 for continental AND cooked. The cooked breakfast was delicious and there was a very good selection of food. The selection of continental breakfast food was what you would expect. We also enjoyed a few drinks at the bar after our concert on the Saturday evening. There was a good selection of drinks and the staff were friendly. The staff at breakfast were very accomodating too.

Room Tip: Get a river facing room.

Although some of the hotels décor is not exactly to my taste (some of the crazy chairs are not overly comfortable to actually sit on) they have clearly spared little expense in putting it all together, the bar is a very pleasant space and the service in there was excellent.

The room we were given was huge, and it overlooked the river, everything was immaculately clean and the room service breakfast was all that you could expect it to be. We did not have a single problem with anything at any point during our stay.

All of the staff we spoke to were very pleasant helpful and courteous, all in all it was one of the best stays I have had in any hotel anywhere and I would happily stay there again.

Concierge were welcoming, warm, knowledgeable and efficient. Hotel is modern and stylish - though mood lightling in lobby areas may be problematic for those with sight impairments.
We stayed on a Sunday night and they were not full so offered to upgrade our room. We were given one at the front which had fantastic view directly onto the 'blinking eye' bridge. Room was large and very stylish with lots of touches like a chaise long to make you feel comfortable.
Bathroom also very stylish and generous quantities of complimentary toiletries. My only grumble was the shower pressure could have been better, but it was alright.
Brasserie on 1st floor was very very good and far exeeded our expectation. It was also very stylish.
We loved the place and would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Rooms with river facing views are great.

Fog on the Tyne? Let's hope not. Otherwise you'll miss the great view of the Tyne Bridge you get from our hotel in Newcastle city centre. But then, when you're staying at Malmaison Newcastle, it's the views on the inside that tell you your boat's come in. And who wants to spend all night out on the town when one hotel in Newcastle has a whole floor with a shipbuilding theme and bathtubs you could sink a battleship in? It could only be the Newcastle Mal. ... more   less
