Malmaison Newcastle

I travelled with a pal to Malmaison, Quayside, Newcastle on 4 January 2012. This was booked through Thomas Cook Sport as part of a package (match ticket/hotel).

The Hotel is very nice, good location on the quayside next to the Milennium Bridge and about a 10 min walk from the railway station.

On arrival the male Receptionist was very 'frosty and robotic' to say the least, Vey little information was given regarding Hotel facilities, services or 'would we be dining' etc.

We were in room 419 which was an executive twin - nice big room with a side view of the Tyne. The bed (2 doubles) were very comfy and the pillows to die for. The rainfall shower was good but could have been higher as I am 6' and my head was literally scraping the top.

Breakfast was nicely laid out and the 'hot menu' is freshly cooked for you. Again the service was very average and plates soon built up at the side of the table which staff took there time to clear away.

On checking out I had a disagreement regarding the charge for room upgrade (long story) whereby the same male receptionist got himself in a real tangle, was very unprofessional and his usual robotic self. The charge was eventually waived despite it being obvious it was a communication problem between Thomas Cook/Malmaison.

In summary, nice Hotel, good location, nice rooms, good food but very very average staff (receptionist and waiters).

My wife and I stayed for a night following a great deal on their website, all we had to do was spend £75 on food at drink....easy.
The Corner room we had overlooked the Tyne and had great views over the Bridge and Gallery. Linen and the Bathroom area was spotless.
We managed to squeeze in a Facial and massage in the basement Spa, both treatments were great value for money and the staff and facilities well welcoming and professional, a must visit.
The meal in the Restaurant was excellent, the menu possibly a bit limiting for the fussy eaters.
Would definitely recommend and would book again if visiting Newcastle.

Yet again, the Malmaison hotel chain was consistently good and did not let us down. We had a lovely, spacious room and enjoyed the Homegrown and Local meal the night before NYE. The service in the brasserie was excellent, with very knowledgeable and helpful staff. In fact, the service overall was very good.

The location, along the banks of the river is good, and the decor is warm and stylish.

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here on valentines day last year in one of the corner suites which was absolutely stunning. Our meal in the restaurant was delicious and the champagne and strawberries really topped it off. I am a huge fan of all the Mal hotels but this one in particular really stood out

On route home for Christmas we decided to spend one night here at the last minute. After finding a great deal on their website I rang to book and it was promptly dealt with. At check-in I requested help with our numerous Xmas gifts that we needed to take out of the car into the room and a girl came with a trolley and duly obliged. Friendly and chatty, she refused to take a Xmas tip for her help and said it was her job and she was more than happy to do so!
As part of our room rate we enjoyed a delicious three course meal in the restaurant but were so full we couldn't manage dessert. The waiter offered to have it prepped in the kitchen and suggested we call down anytime to have it delivered to our room. Now that's service!
The steak frites with garlic butter was incredible.
We filled up on a tasty breakfast in the morning before continuing with our journey.
Our room was clean, with a very comfortable bed and all the mod cons. Even though it was deemed "small" it was more than adaquete for two people, luggage and enough gifts to fill Santa's grotto. We parked in the car park across the road from the hotel, which they gave us a discount card for.

Room Tip: Although our room was facing the car park and not the lovely Tyne bridge, we didn't suffer from...

The hotel is a bit out of the way, with the city centre a taxi ride away, you can of course walk but you have to be fit,
the hotel over looks the iconic bridges over the Tyne with restaurants and bars on every corner,
I found the hotel parking was a bit strange, its behind the hotel across the street on top floor of a multi story car park ; so its not under cover, bit of a bind in the rain and quite a hike to the hotel reception,
I found the hotel to be gloomy dark and confusing, my wife is partially sighted and I could see she was struggling with the layout.
to be honest the staff were the only saving grace very attentive and helpful there are better hotels in the area but the iconic views save this hotel from being no more than average.

Room Tip: south facing rooms have the view over the river

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Fog on the Tyne? Let's hope not. Otherwise you'll miss the great view of the Tyne Bridge you get from our hotel in Newcastle city centre. But then, when you're staying at Malmaison Newcastle, it's the views on the inside that tell you your boat's come in. While you're right at the heart of Newcastle's great shops and exciting nightlife, the lure of MALBAR's legendary cocktails and the Mal Brasserie's classic dishes with a twist is pretty strong. And who wants to spend all night out on the town when one hotel in Newcastle has a whole floor with a shipbuilding theme and bathtubs you could sink a battleship in? It could only be the Newcastle Mal. ... more   less
