“great stay”
Reviewed 27 July 2013

We had a lovely stay at this hotel, all of the staff we encountered were cheerful, friendly and helpful - you can't always say that about UK hotels, so well done!
We asked for a high floor when booking and had a fab view from the 6th floor, encompassing both the Millenium and the Tyne bridges, couldn't be better.
It was a very hot afternoon when we arrived so we were very glad of air conditioning that worked well, it would have been pretty uncomfortable otherwise.
The room was a good size, the complimentary toiletries the best I've seen in a very long time and the beds, pillows etc. were very comfortable.
One little niggle, the room could have done with a good dusting, there was quite a lot of it on side tables, mirrors etc. Also, the mini fridge had a fair bit of mould inside - needs a clean! Some of the furnishings are also a bit chipped, could do with a bit of a re-furb.
The location is perfect with bars and restaurants within easy walking distance, we were meeting friends for dinner so didn't sample the food in the brasserie. However, if the excellent breakfast is indicative of the general standard of food then we may eat dinner here in the future.
My all time favourite breakfast is eggs benedict so I opted for that. I can honestly say it was probably the best version of this dish I've had outside the US - it was just perfect.
The car parking was reasonable at £10 for overnight and was adjacent to the back of the hotel, ideal.
Overall, we had an enjoyable stay and will certainly return in future.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor overlooking the millenium bridge.

Very well presented hotel in line with others within the malmaison group. Familiar decor will greet those who know the brand. Rooms well presented, bar expensive and food very good. Premium to pay for the hotel but a very good all round experience

Can't fault it!

Stayed at the Mal on their friday 'Bed and Bubbles' deal. Was £99 for room, two cocktails, and 2 course meal for two in the brasserie. Bargain!

We were offered the option via email prior to the stay to upgrade our room however we didnt take up the offer. We had already requested a room with a Millenium Bridge view which was lovely. We had a view of the bridge, the Baltic and a long stretch of the Quayside.

The hotel decor is really sumptuous, lots of deep purple, it felt really luxurious.

Our room and bathroom was very modern, clean and comfortable. Lovely toiletries which were more than ample in size. Minibar was available with an excellent wide choice of drinks, and snacks. The bed wasnt too comfortable, unfortunatley it was a bit hard for us, but the bedding was great, and the room was well air conditioned and really cool. We were so thankful of this as it was really hot outside and we were worried our room would be the same.

My hubby used the gym prior to gettng ready to go out for drinks. He said it was really small with only one of each machine but he was the only person in there at the time so made full use of the service.

We had drinks in the bar which was of the same decor and quality as the rest of the hotel, as was the brasserie. We were given a set menu to choose from or an allowance from the al a carte menu. The set menu was fine, but we chose to eat from the al a carte menu and paid the difference when given our bill. Food was excellent and the service great.

Check out was easy and there were no problems with our final bill.

We will definatley be going back, and would probably opt for the upgraded room next time :)

I’m a big fan of this small chain of boutique hotels having stayed at the one in Liverpool regularly for work and drank at the bar of the one in Reading regularly for pleasure! We stayed for two nights whilst attending a friend’s wedding and it was perfect. Everyone has a smile on their face and seems genuinely happy to be working there. When we got to reception they couldn’t find my booking – the fault was entirely on my part in that I’d booked the wrong two nights! No worry though as they sorted it and found me a room nonetheless. One of the best things about the Mal is the bar which once you’re settled in you don’t want to leave! The complimentary dry roasted peanuts helps – you forget quite how good they are as they seem to have gone out of fashion elsewhere! The other great thing is the sizeable toiletries that they encourage you to take. The location of the Newcastle site is fantastic – right on the Quayside with views of both the Millenium and Tyne bridges and hence only a fifteen minute walk into the centre of town. Very reasonable at £99 a night (with parking just £4 a night on the weekend) – if you need somewhere to stay in Newcastle then look no further.

A really great location as others have mentioned. Our room was a great size and very well appointed for a standard room. Lovely bathroom with nice toiletries, and bath robes. Beds were quite hard though. We had dinner in the restaurant which was of an exceptionally good quality. Breakfast was a fantastic choice of hot food from the menu - eggs Benedict, fried breakfast, kippers, scrambled eggs or omelettes. Continental choices also available. All ingredients were of a very high quality.

Service from all staff was, without question, outstanding.

I would highly recommend staying here and would definitely return.

Have stayed here before and it's always a pleasure. This time we had a corner room with a view of the millennium bridge out of one window and the Tyne bridge out of the other.
Friendly service throughout. The bar was quieter than previously so service was good.
Still a great place to stay.

Great location but a bit overpriced. The room was big but the bathroom was extremely small. The mattress needs replacement as it has no spring to it. Got up in middle of night and came back to sit on bed and felt like I hit a hard board! We have been travelling for a week and other hotels offer free bottled water, etc. but only tea and coffee here. Luckily a Tesco is located nearby. Nice workout facility on 4 th floor. Feels a bit like a convention hotel and better for business travelers.
