“Great overnight stay”
Reviewed 11 November 2013

We stayed at the Malmaison as we were going to a music event across at the Sage. The location of the Malmaison is great if you want to be in the Quayside or close to the Sage or Baltic. It was great value too, breakfast was included in the price together with £20 off our food bill in the Bistro. We had the best burgers we have ever had - and that includes those we have eaten in the States, they were absolutely amazing!

The hotel is very dark, with dimly lit corridors and public areas, but I think that is part of the image of the Malmaison. Our room was large, comfy bed, bathroom very modern and efficient; just what you would expect of a 4 star city centre hotel.

I would have no hesitation in staying in a Malmaison again.

I stay at malmaison every fortnight on business and will continue to do so for as long as i have the pleasure to do so. All staff are friendly and eager to help in particular jess in the bar whom my stay is never complete without, you always feel at home in a hotel when you can sit at a table and not need the waitress to come and take an order yet she still gets it right every time!

The Newcastle Malmaison has the best of locations; on the Quayside looking onto the Millennium Bridge over the Tyne. We had a superior double room on the second floor (203) of the hotel, looking out onto the bridge. As it was a corner room it had a double aspect and the room itself was enormous, including a king size bed, sofa/sitting area, and two televisions - one in view of the bed, and the second in the sitting area.

We didn't eat at the hotel but did make use of the Starbucks on the ground floor of the hotel.

The cocktail bar on the first floor is great for a drink before heading out for dinner but can get quite busy, particularly as there seemed to be groups of non-residents calling in (including a few local celebrities) - presumably because no other venue can rival its view of the Tyne.

A good hotel overall and would stay here again when next visiting Newcastle.

Room Tip: Worth paying for a superior corner room with a view (inc. 203) which has a double aspect view and a...

We stayed here for my husbands birthday and had a very pleasant stay. All staff were friendly and attentive. I upgraded to a room with a view of the millennium bridge and this was worth paying for. Evening meal was ok, breakfast excellent. Would definitely stay again.

We stayed at the Malmaison for a long weekend with friends, and the rooms were ideal, with plenty of space to have a pre-parandial drink with our friends.
the location on the Quayside was perfect - the Millennium bridge is just outside the front door.

There are many good restaurants within easy walking distance (some not so easy if you have to scale the steep steps up towards town centre!).
We found the Starbucks in the lobby a very good alternative to the more expensive hotel breakfast.

I had several instances of poor and in attentive service from Malmaison. Upon checking in I said that instead of leaving a credit card my preference would be to pay as you go for any expenses. But I was informed that an imprint was hotel policy, so I consented despite objecting to this. The following morning my breakfast order took 15 mins to arrive; cold instead of hot! This was doubly inconvenient as I had to breakfast quickly.

The bedding was extremely comfortable and the tv was high quality. But the room, room 404, did not seem particularly spacious considering the room cost.

So day 2 breakfast. Again I needed quick service and again I waited 15 mins, but at least this time breakfast was hot. So overall quality was lacking and I received a basic service considering the cost of a room.

Whilst I stay in Newcastle frequently and will continue to do so, I'm afraid to say my visits will be to other hotels.

We stayed here a couple of nights and had a lovely room with a view of the river.

Very spacious room with all the normal Mal styling. The bridge just outside the hotel was fabulous and we loved watching it open and close. An easy walk into town and just moments away from plenty of nice restaurants and bars (breakfast in the hotel was expensive and not overly special).

The Biscuit Factory gallery is more worthy of a visit than the Baltic Centre one just across the river...

Fog on the Tyne? Let's hope not. Otherwise you'll miss the great view of the Tyne Bridge you get from our hotel in Newcastle city centre. But then, when you're staying at Malmaison Newcastle, it's the views on the inside that tell you your boat's come in. While you're right at the heart of Newcastle's great shops and exciting nightlife, the lure of MALBAR's legendary cocktails and the Mal Brasserie's classic dishes with a twist is pretty strong. And who wants to spend all night out on the town when one hotel in Newcastle has a whole floor with a shipbuilding theme and bathtubs you could sink a battleship in? It could only be the Newcastle Mal. ... more   less
