“Brilliant stay”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

An excellent stay at a lovely hotel situated on the banks of the Tyne right opposite the Millennium Bridge. From the friendly staff to the spacious room to the excellent food, all 1st class. Had an evening meal in the restaurant, again really enjoyable. A lovely walk along the river side to the Metro Arena (approx 15-20 mins) and only 10-15mins walk to the heart of the city (a womans paradise for shopping). This was a lovely stay at at a lovely hotel in a lovely city.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the river

Had dinner at a local restaurant on the Quayside and popped into the Mal for some drinks in their bar with friends. Some of the décor is shabby and well past it's best but the staff were really welcoming and friendly. One young man needs special mention. Lewis, one of the bar staff was really helpful when one of his colleagues seems to have disappeared. When I went to the bar to order more drinks and sort the bill out he could not have been more helpful, polite and well groomed, he listened to what was being asked and acted on it. What the place needs is more staff as conscientious as him and they might be on a winner. However, the place still needs a good makeover! .

A comfortable stay. The decor was not particularly to our taste and the room slightly on the small side, hence the 'Very Good' rather than the 'Excellent'.

The breakfast was of good quality and the staff helpful. The Geordie accent is lovely to listen to and makes everyone seem very pleasant!

The hotel's location was convenient with pleasant walking nearby.

We booked a standard double room on late rooms for £79. Malmaison e mailed us offering an upgrade, it detailed the options, and cost for each, you chose those you were interested in, and found out on arrival which if any, they had been able to allocate. We ticked all of them, to be considered for, and were given a corner suite for £37, so for £116, that was a great deal. The receptionist was very friendly, our room wasn't quite ready so she took us to the bar for a complimentary drink, looked after our luggage, and when she brought the key to us, our luggage had already been taken to our room.. The room was large, lounge area, huge comfortable bed, a massive TV which swivelled to either end of the room, and a fabulous bathroom, with a roll top bath and a double shower. I love the decor in Malmaison, the only thing I would say is that the wood furniture in particular is a bit shabby throughout the hotel. We went to a concert at the arena, had a fabulous cocktail in the bar, which was very busy on our return. We were hungry but by this time only a limited night menu was available for room service. We ordered 3 toasties, on receipt 2 of them were not the type we had ordered, and really poor quality all 3. We decided to have breakfast in Newcastle, on check out we were asked if everything had been ok. Told the receptionist that we had thoroughly enjoyed our stay, but gave some feedback on our room service food. I didn't want to make a fuss, but she wanted to get someone to talk to us, but was unable to, as the was a fire alarm incident going on. Anyway it didn't spoil a great trip, and we would come back.

Stayed at this hotel overnight as a 60th birthday present for my wife. What an excellent choice, the hotel and facilities were first class, we stayed in room 715 on the seventh floor. The views down the Tyne were unbeatable, I cannot recall having stayed in a more opulent room, we couldn't fault the decor or furnishings, it was a special place for a special occasion. We did not use the fitness facilities, so are unable to comment on them. All the staff that we had dealings with were professional and efficient, the continental breakfast was well laid out and plentiful. I would highly recommend the Malmaison for a special occasion and would not hesitate to recommend it for anyone wanting a special place to stay in Newcastle. We will return again.

Room Tip: Worth paying more for a room with a view over the River Tyne.

I stayed here a few years ago and would love to repeat the experience. It is a beautiful hotel overlooking the Tyne with a view of the Millenium Bridge. It brought back so many childhood memories for me. The room was extremely comfortable and well laid out, breakfast was to die for and an evening meal there was superb. Ok, it was a few years ago, and it surely must have gone from strength to strength. Hopefully this year in September I can repeat that delicious experience with my husband,

Room Tip: I stayed here about 5 or 6 years ago, so can't speak for recent changes, but surely was a lovely...

Fog on the Tyne? Let's hope not. Otherwise you'll miss the great view of the Tyne Bridge you get from our hotel in Newcastle city centre. But then, when you're staying at Malmaison Newcastle, it's the views on the inside that tell you your boat's come in. While you're right at the heart of Newcastle's great shops and exciting nightlife, the lure of MALBAR's legendary cocktails and the Mal Brasserie's classic dishes with a twist is pretty strong. And who wants to spend all night out on the town when one hotel in Newcastle has a whole floor with a shipbuilding theme and bathtubs you could sink a battleship in? It could only be the Newcastle Mal. ... more   less
