“Away Day”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

We have stayed here a few times and usually upgrade to a river view, we did the bubbles and breakfast package and had a lovely stay, the room was overlooking the millennium bridge and when we came back late in the evening I sat and watched the colours on the bridge changing, listening to Mark Knopfler, and remembering days long ago when I would come to the market there on Sundays as a child.
The best surprise was the hamper left outside the door for breakfast, we ate looking out to Gateshead waking up with an amazing back drop of the Sage and Baltic.
Many thanks to all the staff, who as usual were excellent.
Well done also to the firemen who rescued the Kittywake from bridge!!!!

Room Tip: river views are lovely

We've stayed at this hotel a few times and it's always been ok the location is fabulous. This time we stayed on an offer and upgraded to the suite on the top floor. The only quibble I would have with the room was it smelt musty which I think was the aircon. Other than that the room was well appointed and spacious.

The bar was good although the table service was a bit scatty as my hubby ordered a second beer which failed to materialise before we moved on to the silk room for dinner.

In the morning we went to breakfast Which had a few issues. Firstly the little jam pots on our table had all been used. Next I ordered egg and soldiers the egg was hard boiled and not at all dippy. The toast came already cut in soldiers so I ordered more to spread the egg on and eat egg on toast since the yokes were hard. 25 minutes later after asking twice I got my toast. By which time my eggs were cold and my hubby had long since finished his full English.

When we checked out we queued up but people seemed to be able to skip the queue by going to the side asking for taxis etc. which wouldn't happen if the desk staff didn't facilitate it.

In all hotel was good service was poor

Stayed here again for the fourth time. Had a huge double room (317) and it was very quiet and comfortable. Mini bar was well stocked. They now provide bars of chocolate from the Grown Up chocolate company - these are not in the mini bar but are still charged at £3.50 each. They were delicious. We had a super king size bed and although it was quite hard, we slept well. Bathroom had a shower over the bath and was clean and well maintained. Chaise long was comfortable and a great place to look at the view of the Tyne from the window. Breakfast was quick and well cooked. This is probably our last time here as our daughter has now graduated from University but we would happily recommend this hotel to our friends.

Room Tip: Third floor or above - lovely and quiet.

This place is comfortable and the staff are great but the decor is dire. Think black ash furniture that most people binned in the 1990s, dark purple corridors that most people painted over in the early 1980s and extremely low lighting (to the point of being inconvenient).
With decent decoration this could be a good place to stay but till then don't tell your style conscious mates that you were there.
If you do go the river view is good.

Just had a 2 night stay here. The service was outstanding, my little one was ill during our stay and the staff especially Lee (I think he is the night porter) was amazing, so helpful and charming to my 9 year old. The room was spacious and extremely comfortable, the food was great but the service just made it for us. Well done!!

Fog on the Tyne? Let's hope not. Otherwise you'll miss the great view of the Tyne Bridge you get from our hotel in Newcastle city centre. But then, when you're staying at Malmaison Newcastle, it's the views on the inside that tell you your boat's come in. While you're right at the heart of Newcastle's great shops and exciting nightlife, the lure of MALBAR's legendary cocktails and the Mal Brasserie's classic dishes with a twist is pretty strong. And who wants to spend all night out on the town when one hotel in Newcastle has a whole floor with a shipbuilding theme and bathtubs you could sink a battleship in? It could only be the Newcastle Mal. ... more   less
