The Mal is in a great location, close to bars and restaurants. The rooms are stylish but some of the furnishings are a bit scuffed/ dated looking. At £13.95 the breakfast is quite expensive and you can find better value for money in the area. Having said that, I could not fault the quality of food we were served.

Room Tip: opt for a room that overlooks the river - lovely views

I book the Ark Royal Suite for the night of my wedding on the 20th of June this year. As we live in Newcastle we always knew this was one of the best hotels in the city.

First problem was trying to confirm early check in on the morning of the wedding. After sending an email to the booking site I was told I can book the upgrade at the cost of £35 but won't get confirmation until the morning of arrival. Not great when your getting married that day.

Staff were young but nice but the hotel is very dark and outdated. Room was nice, again very dark. I think the whole place needs an upgrade and brightening up although I am aware this is the style of this boutique hotel.

Location is obviously fabulous but for what we paid I think we would have got a lot more for a lot less in other hotels in the City.

Room Tip: Can only comment on our room which was a corner location but at almost £250 per night wasn't wor...

Malmaison has a style , it is dark colours and chic. It doesn't suit everyone... it does suit me! Great team, Happy, cheerful and good service. I love the little touches in the room, the toiletries , mini Bar selection. All the Mals' seem to get their fair share of show biz and pop groups, I was there the night a boy band were in. Quite surreal having lots of girls hanging around outside waiting for them! Malmaison in Newcastle is in a great location. Right on the Tyne by the 'winking eye' bridge. Plenty of bars and restaurants in walkable distance. Will be going back!! There is a Starbucks in the same building with access into the hotel.

Room Tip: If you like 'Hilton' don't bother going, if you want to feel a bit of show biz....its fo...

Bit of a birthday treat. Had a Friday night here on a wine and dine package. On arrival we were lucky enough to be able to sample four different cocktails on reception to promote a new cocktail night! The reception staff great. Room great and food was excellent. Cocktails were even better! We love the place and will return!

My husband and I had our afternoon wedding reception at the malmaison on the 5th july this year up in one of the lovely lounges up on the top floor of the hotel as well as staying over for 2 nights in one of the beautiful boutique suites. We really can't thank you all enough! The whole experience from the planning to the big day went perfect (Claire and David you were absolute stars!!).
The little touches like being greeted out of the car on a beautiful sunny afternoon to glasses of champagne outside to the rose petals and bubbly in our room on the evening, the day couldn't have gone any better.
There was part of the bar reserved for our party to go and enjoy some cocktails in the malbar, the food that we chose for the afternoon was out of this world and everyone enjoyed it! The staff on the day made it so special for us and our guests and nothing was a bother.
We would definitely recommend this hotel if you are thinking of having a small wedding reception the staff couldn't do enough for us! We found out the week that we got married that the malmaison has just acquired a wedding license which was a shame as we would have definitely got married up in the lounge had we had more time to change the venue!!!!

We can't fault the hotel we have stayed a few times now and can't wait to arrange our next night away!!!

Thank you so much

Jamie and Laura

Room Tip: Definitely upgrade to one of the superior or suites with a view of the tyne!!!

Booked this hotel a couple of weeks ago during Newcastle University graduation week. We hadn't stayed at a Malmaison previously and with the Taste of Summer offer at £99 per night which included our room, 2 x £19.95 contribution to dinner and a £17.50 bottle of wine, this seemed too good an opportunity to miss - so we booked two nights!

Before I go on to the main review of the hotel, it is perhaps worth noting that the Malmaison theme is unlikely to appeal to everyone. It's the sort of 'marmite' of hotels, you'll either love or hate the dark, moody colours (purples, dark reds and greys), the lift speaks French to you and overall, it's quite a quirky set up. I hate 'marmite' but the 'Malmaison' was an instant hit with me.

As with all deals, there is usually some apprehension about what you will get (the broom cupboard sized room, the view of next doors backyard etc). Not so the case here and we were absolutely amazed at the size of the room which would probably be classed as a suite in some hotels. Despite having black wood furniture, and a grey coloured theme, the room wasn't dark and was accentuated by splashes of colour with cushions and quality white bedding. There was plenty of storage space, more than adequate seating for two people and a huge bed. Rooms have flat screen TVs (Good size screens). The bathroom was a good size, had quality fittings and plenty of white, fluffy towels and shampoo and lotions - these do bear the 'Malmaison' name but are of good quality. All aspects of the room were spotlessly clean and whilst there was the odd knock to furniture (black wood accentuates this) this was no worse than any other hotel room which pick up knocks and scrapes from usage.

A nice touch in the rooms is a couple of bottles of wine (Mal Plonk!) which are clearly priced and whilst we didn't use them, it's good to have the option if you decide on a whim that you simply must have something alcoholic.

We slept well during our stay - this was helped by the thick curtains which provided 'black out' quality and also we heard no noise whatsoever. Our room was at the side of the hotel, possibly if you are facing the river, there may be some noise at night because the hotel is situated in a popular area.

A couple of slight problems with our bill when we checked out due to a charge for breakfast being added without our knowledge (we made separate arrangements for breakfast since it wasn't included in the £99 deal - tip, Starbucks in the entrance is good for breakfast) and we were also charged for the wine included in our package. This was all sorted without problem and thanks to Dan Bowman on reception who dealt with this professionally, efficiently and politely and arranged the necessary refunds.

I have reviewed the bar and restaurant separately.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely use the Malmaison hotel group again in the future.

Fog on the Tyne? Let's hope not. Otherwise you'll miss the great view of the Tyne Bridge you get from our hotel in Newcastle city centre. But then, when you're staying at Malmaison Newcastle, it's the views on the inside that tell you your boat's come in. While you're right at the heart of Newcastle's great shops and exciting nightlife, the lure of MALBAR's legendary cocktails and the Mal Brasserie's classic dishes with a twist is pretty strong. And who wants to spend all night out on the town when one hotel in Newcastle has a whole floor with a shipbuilding theme and bathtubs you could sink a battleship in? It could only be the Newcastle Mal. ... more   less
