We found the location convenient and quiet. Walk from the station is not too far, but there are also several buses. The AD122 bus goes nearby on West Road to Hadrian's wall so you don't have to go into town for it. On our arrival, we were greeted warmly by our hostess and given useful information about the area. Breakfast was well presented in a cosy room nicely furnished. Room was pleasant and WI FI worked, but the ensuite bathroom could do with some updating.

Despite its location somewhat out from the city centre, this small hotel provided a very pleasant experience. The owner was very friendly indeed! She gave good advice on the city and nearby places (Durham, Lindisfarne). The room was very comfortable; the area was quiet. Our only quibble would be the service at breakfast -- well-intentioned but a bit slow and disorganized. (The brealfast was good, however.) The taxi ride into the centre took about fifteen minutes, but the hotel had an arrangement with a cut-rate taxi service; so the out-of-centre location was no problem. Staying at this hotel was a very worthwhile experience!

3 of us stayed for a weekend break in early July. A substantial older property with character, garden, homely atmosphere. Our standard rooms were clean and compact, with old fashioned wardrobes, storage and features. Beds very comfortable and sleep undisturbed by noise, as it might be in the heart of the city. Bathrooms were fine and near to rooms, very clean with facilities working well. Pleasant lounge with TV and music available.
The welcome and service throughout was very friendly and helpful. A full cooked breakfast was definitely offered each morning, along with usual cereals, yoghurt, juices, etc. The times breakfast was available was flexible too.
The location is a couple of miles from the quayside and city centre. Regular bus service 5 minutes walk away, while a taxi ride cost £6 one way. The walk into the city was about 25 minutes downhill.
Some less positive things to mention. The neighbourhood around the hotel could feel a little daunting to some, especially after dark, although we never encountered any problems. One of the wardrobes had a tendency to topple over when opened. The dining room could get overstretched if many guests turned up at a similar time.
However, positives more than outweighed these, the hotel was very good value and I would definitely recommend, provided you don't mind a short journey into the centre.

We received a warm welcome from the owners at Clifton House. The garden and hanging baskets look lovely and the entrance is very nice. Our triple family room was at the top of the hotel ( a few flights of stairs). Everything was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was delicious, full English, in a lovely dining room. My husband heard some street noise during the night but I had ear plugs and slept like a log. Our 3 year old also enjoyed the stay and was made most welcome. Easy location to find and close to the city centre. If we return to the area I would definitely come back.

Although I arrived way too early I was greeted warmly, offered coffee, and had a map and advice to the city given to me by the gracious host. My room was spacious and inviting and the ensuite bathroom was modern and clean. Breakfast was excellent. I was invited to make myself at home in the common rooms which are beautiful.

Stayed for one night in a family room. Very comfortable room with a great breakfast the next morning. Ideal for visiting the centre of Newcastle or the coast. Good parking. The hosts and staff are all very friendly and made us feel very welcome. Would definitely stay again.
