This installation looked great new with its vibrant blue set in with the buildings around it but the council have let it go to seed the artist must be very disappointed.

The square is very close to grey street and just where Laing Art gallery is. It is interesting but you should pay attention on the details only if you are walking past it, otherwise other sighs in Newcastle are far better.

The concept was good: dazzlingly bright blue glass-beaded yes covering a public square, with arty cafes and the offices surrounding it all joining in the blue theme.

The reality was that the tiles (apparently costing £2million and sourced from a US manufacturer whose samples clearly were not representative) were always more grey than blue, and other than a pick of paint on the girders of Higham House there was never anything blue about the buildings around the square. The cafe on the square, once a busy and quirky place, was later turned into a tacky coffee shop by day, drunken fighting bar by night. Bizarrely it was also merged with the newsagent next door which thereafter always looked like a front for a drugs operation to me. Both have now closed.

Fail.

The Blue Carpet may have looked attractive when new and glinting blue in the sunlight, but now it appears a pathetic ghost of what it once was - grey with small blue speckles - and the few rectangles that have been replaced with new only emphasise how badly the paving has faded over the years. Definitely not a well-loved, well-cared for attraction.

This should only be listed as an attraction to serve as a warning. It wasn't much good when it was new; 12 years haven't improved matters. I wouldn't cross the road to see this. It's faded with the odd tile replaced which serves only to highlight the state of the rest of it. I think the council are just waiting fur everyone to forget how much they spent on it before they pull it up. Can't be long now.

On the plus side it is free so you can walk about on it to your heart's content. Top value I guess
