Sandman Signature Newcastle Hotel
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 20 October 2011

I stayed for one night at the Sandman whilst in Newcastle on business in October 2011. The location is handy - It's a five minute taxi ride from the central train station (15 minute walk) and is right opposite St. James Park Metro stop.

Pros: Check-in was really easy and the staff were friendly. The room was small but perfectly formed. Everything was clean, the bed was really comfy and the in-room microwave was a nice touch. The shower was also great. There is also free wi-fi in the rooms.

Cons: I had a room on the front of the building which overlooks a main road so it was a little noisy. The food in the 'Sharkbar' was nice enough but it's not the place for a relaxing, quiet meal (very noisy, dark and definitely aimed at blokes)... Breakfast was also served in the bar which wasn't ideal. The décor in the lobby is also slightly questionable (particularly the horse with a lampshade on it's head!)

Overall I would recommend staying at the Sandman but maybe ask for a room at the back of the building where it's a little quieter.

Room Tip: Try the back of the hotel for a quieter room (the front of the hotel overlooks a main road).

I stayed a night here in a King Room in October 2011. The room was very small, but in fairness that was stated on the website. The room was tastefully furnished, but more thought should have been given to the layout to make it more usable. Plugs by the bed would be a useful addition. Also, I could not use the room lights as they produced a high pitched buzzing noise so I ended up having to sit in the dark! The bathroom was small. I understand and like wet room showers, but this one hadn't been well designed so the towels ended up soaked when I had a shower. I had the buffet breakfast which was not up to standard for a hotel of this class (cheap supermarket bread, poor quality juices and a very limited selection - and highly priced). Getting served in the bar was very difficult (I gave up trying to get a second drink after fifteen minutes) and when I charged my £3.50 drink to the room I was told I had "insufficient credit"! On balance I might stay here again, but I will give it a while to settle down and improve on the basics. The staff were friendly though.

Pretty much the same as the other review.

Service, Shark Bar, Room Service, Bathroom all excellent.

Not really a Junior Suite, No Car park and noisy workman.

The staff will make this an excellent place to stay.

Ok so the hotel is not quite finished and there are some niggles but nothing major ...
Positives.
Firstly, the staff, they are so polite and friendly and gave me a nice welcome. Always important for a first impression. My room was on the second floor and didn't hear any noise at all...The bed was so comfy and the rooms really nice and modern as was the Bathroom with the fantastic shower and wet room set up. Didn't have breakfast as was working and had spent the extra half hour in the comfy bed so cannot comment on that. So had this been a leisure visit I would have given the full five stars.

the negatives..
I stay in Newcastle Monday to Friday every week in hotels for work and had been keen to try this hotel as I noticed the concept of the suite and the amenities. Yes, the room does have a microwave but you have nothing to use with it,.,no cutlery or plates in the room. This may have been different in the bigger more expensive rooms so would check before booking if this is important. No bottled water which is standard in much less expensive hotels in Newcastle. So as a business traveller not quite sure it ticked all the boxes for me. The parking was impossible to find given that the hotel is at a very busy junction as it turned out what actually across the road!

First the positives which far outweigh any negatives, we arrived in Newcastle and as we drove up to the hotel we find you cannot stop outside as it has no parking on the road or even a driveway for the hotel as we drove off past the hotel as we had 20 cars behind us, we rang the hotel and a really helpful lady gave us directions to the car park which is opposite the hotel and actually walked over to meet us and give us our parking voucher, good touch.
Check in very efficient and quickly up to the room we booked a corporate junior suite! It was so new no one had even fitted the telephones but never mind the room itself is well furnished and the Bathroom is excellent thank god it has plenty of lights and quality showers.
The "suite" itself well I think it was designed by an idiot they have a big wall in between the bed and a small sofa in the so called sitting area its about 4ft wide with a large flat screen TV on the wall but if you sitting down your neck would be badly damaged trying to watch TV and the Bedroom is so badly designed you have about 18 inches between the wall and the end of the bed trying to get to the other side is quite a job very tight as well as the fool who thought it would be OK to put 1 one wall light in a double bedroom I'm being serious 1 light ? They have a large cupboard next to one side of the bed which is absolutely useless for hotel travellers, if they had something half the size and put another bedside cabinet with a light on it would improve it no end, but really to call it a " suite" is a bit misleading although it had a kitchen but cant see the point really as long as you have a kettle and tea making facilities that's all you really need.
The staff were excellent they had a really great can do attitude and nothing to much trouble we spoke to them on several occasions and whatever we wanted they sorted from booking a restaurant in town to good local knowledge.
I believe the room to book if you want a larger room is the King Studio which I was informed did not have this ridiculous wall, the bed was comfortable and free wi fi in the room, must say I know its new but they need a window cleaner badly and also need to get the council to agree a parking bay for quick drop off on checking in your bags 5 min maximum stay in front of hotel just enough to get your bags out of the car especially if its raining or snowing it will be a nightmare walking over from the car park in mid winter with your luggage.

I had breakfast and as far as breakfast goes it was expensive for an English breakfast & pot of tea at £15.95 but I have to say the service again was excellent and best of all they had probably the best quality sausage I have tasted in any hotel usually they are rubbish but not at the Sharks Restaurant they have cracked it, so expensive it may be but top quality and great service and very pretty ladies to serve you, so if like me you are a miserable beggar in the morning they will put a smile on your face so I suppose it was worth it.

Overall it was a good experience top quality staff who go the extra mile and a Hotel which you know will get better as it goes on as its only been open a few weeks I will definitely stay here again when next in the Toon and thats why I give it an excellent 5 rating.

Room Tip: If you want space dont be bluffed by the word "suite" get the King Studio
