“Overnight romance well worth it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2014

Took a chance on an overnight anniversary surprise for us at this hotel. First time and well impressed at service and friendly staff and got free upgrade on booking in to a suite - nice touch. The champagne was good quality and dressed fresh rose a nice touch as part of the deal. Spacious room, lovely bed and plenty of nice touches, e.g. iPod Dock. No problems with parking outside the magnificent St James' Park and close to Stowell Street for that lovely oriental treat. Breakfast was plentiful and of good quality. We were at a rock gig and this topped the night from rock to rolling in comfort - nice one. Just an extra - if you love football and love the toon try it out for a special match in this Geordie jewel.

Room Tip: Level 5 and above and go for the view over the cathedral of football St James Park.

I stayed at the Sandman Signature with five friends last Saturday night. First impressions were that the staff were very friendly and the decor was fabulous. The rooms were spacious and have a kitchen area in them too.

However, there were a few things that would put me off staying here again-
1. We booked three per room which meant that the sofabeds should have been set up in each room. They weren't. We chased several times to get both rooms set up. When they were set up, although the sofabed was made, everything else was only for two people - two mugs, two dressing gowns, etc. It was very frustrating having to chase numerous times.

2. The sofabeds were extremely uncomfortable - just a set of springs wrapped in fabric. I'd go as far as to say they are unusable - I would not recommend using them even for one night.

3. The main problem was the lack of privacy with the bathrooms. They have a forsted glass sliding door. You can therefore see into them through the glass once the light is switched on. Also, the doors don't seal shut - there is a 10cm gap between the door and the wall, so you can see straight into the bathroom from the room.

4. The showers are great - really powerful. However, the glass screen is too short which means that the shower floods the bathroom.

4. Finally, the previous occupier had use the alarm clock in the room. It went off at 6am. Not impressed.

Overall, this is a good hotel. However, I wouldn't have more than two to a room, which therefore doesn't make it so reasonably priced. It's a pleasant surprise over traditional Hilton, etc, but I wouldn't describe it as a luxury hotel as it is lacking in some areas.

Hi Walrus22

Thank you for taking the time out to write a review on your recent stay with us, we really do appreciate all of the comments whether good or bad.

I'm glad that you think our staff and décor are fabulous, we do too!

Apologies that your sofa beds weren't made up straight away, I will pass these comments onto our head housekeeper for future improvement.

Our bathrooms are created as wet rooms, so they are designed to get a little wet! This is one of the many modern design features we have around the hotel.

We do hope to see you again soon!

Having stayed in so many hotels across the UK I always suspend judgement until any doubts and fears can be disproven. I thank my lucky stars that this was the hotel I chose as it truly is a super fly option for anyone visiting Newcastle. From the moment you walk in off the busy street in Gallowgate a haven of clean lines, modern decor and friendly, smiling staff are there to greet you. I had booked a very reasonably priced Junior Suite and was on the 6th floor which afforded amazing views of the building works next door but also into the distance over the town and hills beyond which was stunning in the evening sunset. My husband and I didn't have a need for the small kitchenette or sofa which were neatly fitted into the welcoming foyer of the suite but it did offer the feeling of space and gave us an option to put a bottle of wine in the fridge and feel a little bit more like 'home'. The bed was a superb super king - incredibly comfy, clean and crisp with a TV that worked perfectly (believe me, a lot don't..) and which afforded a fabulous waking-up view of the city. Despite the noise from the street the windows blocked out most of the car and building work chaos and you felt like you had been dipped into an oasis of calm and tranquility among the busyness. Shower - fantastic. Drench or pummel - you choose. Clean, modern and acres of space in the bathroom to move around. We really didn't want for anything. The reception staff could not have been more helpful in finding somewhere to eat that evening and were so personable and unobtrusive plus so obviously local to the area which really added a touch of personality to the hotel. We ate lunch in the Shark Bar (one for the boys I must add given the scantily clad waitresses and sport on the TV screens) and it was fine - a real asset to the hotel but they need to take care it doesn't become too 'blokey' and put off single female travellers. I would stay again in a heartbeat as it was so easy to stroll out of the hotel and be in the centre of Newcastle in 5 minutes - ideal. Why there can't be more hotels of this standard in London I have no idea but the North East have done themselves proud with this one.

Room Tip: If you like a view to wake up to then floors 5 and above are perfect. If you want a bit more space t...

My daughter and I were recently guests at the Sandman - in the city mainly to attend the Elevon World Fashion Show which was staged on Friday, April 11th, 2014.

The room was on the small side but we were both impressed with the warmth of reception (including the window fire) and the decor of the lobby. The fixtures in the hotel are state of the art with the bathroom lock, rain forest shower fixtures and the luminary magnifying mirror. I am still amazed at the technology that must have gone into making the floor slant slightly (but not visually) and the high tech guttering so that the "waterfall water" never intruded on the whole bathroom floor.

I enjoyed the in room facilities for a hot bev and the maid was sensitive to load us up with more English Breakfast and Earl Grey tea than Green Tea. One thing that is necessary is that Sandman must update their hotel guest booklet. There was no "do not disturb sign" and I learned from housekeeping that the gadget by the door was the light signal (blue = room to be cleaned and red= room not to be cleaned).

Overall, we enjoyed our two night stay at a reasonable rate. We even relished in the buffet breakfast which was more than the standard English fare. Having said all of this, the one thing that sticks out in my mind is that Sandman ranks itself as a luxury hotel. Given that backdrop, there are details that Sandman needs to attend to:-
(1) our toilet bowl was brown as though somebody had not flushed.
(2) the toilette soap was already used and the modern stainless steel soap dish was dirty.
(3) the carpet looked as though it needed cleaning and vacuuming.
(4) the desk was well worn and obviously made from chipboard.
(5) the buffet breakfast ran out of juice glasses and sunny side up eggs and the kitchen had to be notified.

Overall, the front desk staff did an amazing job of checking us in and out quickly and always being on hand to call our taxi, small talk and make change. It would have been nicer had we had a more scenic view than the stadium and industrial district but above all, the visit and the stay was memorable.

Room Tip: We were on the 6th floor and heard no traffic at night. In previous reviews, most folk had written a...

Had a great nights stay at the Sandman, I had a suite that was booked for me by my company.
The room I had was at the side of the hotel and had great views over Newcastle and Gateshead.
I did not bother eating in the restaraunt in the night as it was a Bar type place and was very crowded so I had something to eat in china town just around the corner. Breakfast was great though it was a buffet style, so a good feed before a long journey home.

Room Tip: Try to get a suite as they are so roomy

Lovely hotel great location, reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was a little small but spotlessly clean. Sharks bar was lovely and staff also really friendly and helpful. Only stayed 1 night as going to Metro Arena for show easy walking distance, would definitely stay again. Car parking £8 for 24 hrs definitely a bonus in busy city centre.

We stayed here with friends recently and found the place to be smart and modern, though the rooms were a little small and the bathrooms were in need of a little TLC and repainting. The bed is comfortable as the reception staff were friendly, but on the Saturday morning housekeeping came to make up our room at 9:15 am and when we asked them to do the room later they never actually returned and when we asked reception later in the day (admittedly after 8pm) we were told that it wouldn't be possible because they'd gone for the day.
