As per a previous reviewer, this cafe is located on a street dominated by motorbike shops and riders. The cafe was also full of bikers when we visited one sunny Saturday afternoon for lunch. The place is essentially a traditional 'greasy spoon' cafe serving all day English breakfasts, sausage and egg sarnies etc alongside middle eastern food and drink like Persian curry and kebabs. It was served up quickly and it was tasty. The place was full when we arrived and two people vacated a table by chance as we walked in, so we grabbed it quickly. I had the curry from the specials board and my friend had frankfurters chopped up and sautéed with chilli and a few other ingredients. The portions were just right and we left satisfied. This is not a posh eatery but a cafe. Clearly it's a very popular spot tho and they're satisfying appetites nicely!

“A must-visit for food lovers who also love service”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

We visited this cafe after reading many positive reviews online, meaning it had a lot to live up to to avoid disappointment. Situated halfway up the reasonably steep Westgate road, it's not exactly the place where you'd expect to find such a highly rated establishment, being away from the centre of town and amongst many motorcycle stores.

The cafe was busy as we approached with a few seats free, around lunchtime on a Saturday. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by (who I presume to be) the owner and were made to feel welcome, shown to our seats and given a full explanation of the menu. He was making jokes, being helpful and was generally really friendly. The general atmosphere of the cafe was great, from the authentic music and posters/newspapers on the walls giving a flavour of Persia. As the cafe is also a takeaway, there was a steady stream of customers, some appearing to be regulars, coming in and out, re-inforcing the popularity the reviews had hinted at.

I ordered the special of the day, Persian Chicken Curry and my girlfriend ordered Grilled Lamb Skewers with a side of fries for both of us. The food came very quickly and was served by another friendly man who was also making jokes with the owner who was also available if we needed to ask anything and was entertaining other diners. The food was gorgeous and fresh - plenty of rice for the curry and the Grilled Lamb came with bread included. It was very reasonably priced too, the whole meal including a soft drink each was around sixteen pounds.

Overall, we couldn't recommend Moulin Rouge any higher - lovely food, great atmosphere, excellent price and, above all, amazing service. Can't wait to return!

Lovely food and lovely staff. Very helpful with menu advice.
The place is more if a cafe bistro so not open late. It's small and cosy really good value. If never heard if this place until trip advisor but glad we took a punt. Definitely going back soon. Hidden gem off newcastles beaten track.

“This restaurant is fantastic.”

The food is great! To improve we think that if the restaurant had a bit more space to sit, that would be brilliant overall. Thank you Moulin Rouge!

“THE best place to eat in Newcastle (and we're just tourists;-))”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

My husband and I felt brave to leave our hotel in Fenkle St and walk it to the restaurant, after reading the amazing reviews.. And it was a hike up a hill, complete with baby in arms, BUT it was worth all the effort!! How many ways can you say "Amazing" "WoW" but it deserves all the praise and then some. The staff were lovely and welcoming, the food best I've ever had, portions are HUGE and we took it as a Takeaway with needing to put baby to bed.
The food beats Marco Pierre Whites hands down, and then some - you simply must try it if you're in Newcastle.
