Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: The Suggestibles improv comedy group performs at The Cumberland Arms the first Saturday of every month (December varies). The Suggestibles have been attracting crowds to the upstairs venue of this real ale pub since 2004. The six-strong cast takes suggestions from the audience to inspire scenes, sketches and songs. If you like Who's Line is it Anyway? You'll love the Suggestibles! The night is very different to stand-up. It's theatrical with a friendly, party atmos. The Cumberland Arms is a short walk from Newcastle's quayside, (nearest metro is Byker) with wonderful views from its huge beer garden and B&B rooms. It's a real ale pub, with snug fires, friendly folk, and a warm welcome. Year round the Cumberland presents mini music, comedy and beer festivals, and is not to be missed on your trip to Newcastle. The first Saturday of the month combines Newcastle's best-loved comedy group and pub-venue in one go! The Suggestibles: "One of the hottest comedy tickets in the Northeast' The Guardian. As seen in The Times Top 5 Comedy Nights Out Nationwide.

I've been going to see the suggestibles now for quite a few years and along the way have invited many of my friends to come along. Everyone says that it's a fantastic night and have not been disappointed and always ask when we can go again.
If you want a good laugh great atmosphere then this is the place to go you won't be disappointed. The only thing I would advise is to buy your tickets online as they sell out quickly... So go on give it a try you'll love it. :-)

Every time I take a new group of people to see the Suggestibles I have a moment of nerves wondering if they will enjoy themselves, but without fail I convert each and every one of them to a great night at a good price with guaranteed laughter and atmosphere.

Its rare for an audience to be able to participate in the contents of comedy without being subject to ridicule. the Suggestibles consistently offer a fun-filled unscripted event with hilarious one liners and the occasional comedy mishap ensuring its authenticity.

A fantastic vintage pub with some lovely ales and tasty grub plays host to everything from small folk jam sessions to jazz quartets, bandeoke and stand up comedy - the highlight being the last Friday of each month when improv team The Suggestibles pack out the upstairs room and
ask an intelligent and good humoured audience to hurl ridiculous suggestions at them - which they then turn quickly into comedy gold.
Usually made up of five actors and a musician, scenes are built in real time from the most ludicrous diversions thrown up by the punters - and the actors get to show off a huge range of emotional and dramatic skill, all the time keeping the feel of the show earthy and jaw-achingly original. It's impossible to see this twice and get the same material - but unlike many other improv endeavours, which can feel a little amateurish or indulgent, this team know their room, their audience, and to the Nth degree their craft - such is the quality of what they 'make up' that they are regularly joined by players from the Comedy Store, RSC, television shows and local touring shows who want to add The Suggestibles to their CV. To watch them in The Cumberland Arms is an experience I would gamble you might not find anywhere else in the world. A certain amount of the oldy-worldy Geordie culture spiritually inhabits this place, giving one the very satisfying feeling of parlour games around a campfire, with the added twist that you're in safe, professional and very, very funny hands. A definite tourist 'must' if you're in the area.
