“Ideally located , even though in need of refurbishment.”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

I chose this hotel, primarily, for its location: easy access to shops and restaurants; the university; and all the main sights. On these counts the hotel is ideal.

I do understand the hotel has recently been bought and will soon undergo refurbishment. the corridors and public spaces certainly need this; they are shabby and grubby. We booked two rooms - a double and a twin - both overlooking Grey Street on the second floor. The rooms here have a sunny aspect and are very light. They are compact, but adequate, with basic comforts and facilities.

I can't help but feel that this hotel could be so much more special, individual and characterful; especially given that it is not a chain ( although it feels like, and is 'dressed' like, one). The decor is currently very plain, in the manner of a Premier Inn - but could be rich and textured - setting off and complementing the buildings georgian nature and listed status.

I'd stay here again, however, if I got a good price - mainly because of the location.

Stayed here for 1 night as it was perfectly located in the center of town after a night out and the price was great. Reception staff were pleasant but the reception area itself is small and soulless. It's an old building so lots of small corridors to get to rooms but unfortunately all the character of the building itself has been lost. The room I stayed in was clean and presentable. However, it was cramped and dark, as there was the wall of another builder right outside the window. Sleep wasn't great as the room was very warm and there was a constant noise outside the window all night (sounded like some sort of air conditioning unit churning away). Didn't have breakfast but not sure it's actually offered. There are plenty of places just a short walk away to have a decent breakfast though.

Overall, for the price (£60) it did the job. However I would have been very disappointed if I'd paid more.

Some extra information:
Parking right outside the hotel, on Grey street is extremely expensive. However, there is an enclosed car park on dean street (it's closed overnight) which is more reasonable and is about 100 yards from the hotel.

The hotel is a 5min walk from the nearest metro station (Monument).

We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your recent stay with us at the Grey Street Hotel. Its unfortunate to hear that you feel that the character has been lost - we are planning a refurb within the next few months and therefore will take your comments into consideration. We do offer breakfast for hotel guests at the adjacent Living Room Restaurant. Thank you for your feedback and we hope to see you again soon.

We stayed here for two nights and found the location very convenient. The entrance to this old building is a bit disappointing as are the stairs but our room was very well appointed with a good bathroom and excellent shower. There were tea making facilities and nice toiletries,a good tv and free wifi. The Dutch girl on the desk is charming and directed us to the nearby Dean street carpark where parking is £1.30 an hour but free from 5pm until 8 am so one has to pay for 9hours and there is a flat fee of £3.00 on Sunday. We think it is marvellous that this old building has been so well converted and think it would be really good to cheer up the public spaces. We do appreciate that the original features have been preserved but think the tiles could be polished up with advice from specialists. It was very good value and we would definitely stay there again.

Thank you for a lovely review on the Grey Street Hotel. You are correct in saying that the tiles are an original feature of the building and are in fact listed and therefore we cannot alter these. We are pleased that you enjoyed your room and the facilities that the hotel brings. We are planning a big refurb in the up and coming months and therefore the public areas will get a spruce up.

We look forward to welcome you back to our hotel when your plans bring you back to the area.

Stayed at this hotel on business for one night.
Location is fantastic, Grey Street itself has some fantastic bars and restaurants and the hotel is a 5 minute stroll to the train station.
I did feel that the hotel was somewhat over-priced. The hotel sells itself as 'boutique' - I had a corner room with high beams and great views. However, for the price I paid I expect more than an old 15-inch tv and I did find that some of the furniture was of cheap quality for a 4 star hotel.
Would I stay here again? Absolutely. But I probably would not pay £100 per night for the privilege.

We had a twin room with bathroom and shower. Shower was brilliant and the toiletries were appreciated. We were on a room only tariff so I can't comment on the food. Our room was on the fourth floor and the view was a bit restricted but room was comfortable although I really missed having an armchair to flop into. Hotel is very central both for shops and entertainment. When my granddaughter became unwell the reception staff were very helpful and gave us extra time in the room with no charge and gave me directions to the nearest chemist. We will definitely return to finish our holiday.

although the hotel was rated as four star we felt this was too high it was pleasant enough and the bedroom was clean. however the staff were fantastic especially Jordan and rachel in the reception area nothing was too much trouble and they bent over backwards to help us. would definitely recommend this hotel if you fancy staying in Newcastle City Centre it was right in the heart of the centre and well worth the money we paid.
