The building has seen many restaurants come and go, but hopefully P&L is here to stay. Judging by the quality of the food and excellent service, married with a smart, multi-level setting (those looking for romance, go for the top floor, although it is a little warm up there - so don't wear a jumper), and plenty of hype, it should outlast its predecessors. Highlights were the boozy sorbet (brings a smile with it's popping candy) and desserts, but the beef (and jus) were also delicious. To be fair, it is not all perfect - the portions are very small (probably to be expected, but I have a big appetite), the wine list is limited, as is choice for vegetarians, the white powder is overly used, and it would be nice to see a little of our Masterchef, although I appreciate he is very busy and has a job to do! That said, these are minor little gripes and I can't wait to go back! Nicely done.

We ate at Peace and Loaf to celebrate my partners retirement and my imminent retirement. Lovely setting, very friendly and capable staff, very good food, all in all a great night and one we will look forward to repeating.

We chose to dine here to celebrate after a tip from a shop assistant. After looking up the restaurant on the internet i was expecting excellence, the menu looked creative and unique, the video of the chef assured us of traditional food served in interesting and delicious ways and the place looked small and friendly.
When we arrived however we were incredibly impressed at the quality of the service. Staff were friendly and charming without being intrusive and completely professional at all times. Little things made the difference like refilling the water jug each time it was nearly empty and being available to take an order the second we closed the menu's. They were clearly all on their game.
The food was outstanding. We were served entress, with my g/f being gluten intolerant they substituted well and she never felt like she was missing anything. The starter was devine, a salmon sashimi with gin and cucumber puree, very refreshing. An amuse buoche
arrived as another surprise, and was great. For main we ate pork three ways (The best pork belly slice, with super crispy skin, pig cheek falling apart and a sous vide pork loin) and duck breast and crispy leg. We had chips and brocolli sides, but probably didnt need the sides to feel filled and satisfied. Whilst chips might not be the classiest option, they were outstanding! To follow we shared a bonkers mango sorbet, soaked in rum and prosecco and topped with popping candy that made it great fun and perfectly refreshing. A good but fairly average lemon possett followed, topped with freeze dried rasperries and rasberry sorbet. I say average in comparison to the rest of the meal, it was still very good, just didnt wow us like everything else.
We had a a few cocktails and a glass of the house Pino Grigio with the main course and and all were delicious. I'm looking forward to the next excuse we can find to return and try more of the incredible menu. Ive never felt so satisfied and had so much fun in a restaurant and i couldnt recommend it enough. We paid around £85 and for essentially 6 courses with wine and cocktails i think thats outstanding value for money!

I'd heard from a lot of people that this was a great meal that was reasonably priced. It did not disappoint. We went on a night where when I booked I was told it would be quiet, bit there were plenty of people there.

The food was inventive and delicious. The staff were very friendly and great at recommending wine and whether we needed sides (we didn't). We loved the additions of amuse bouches that came out throughout the meal and the wine list was very reasonable.

Not a cheap meal, but very reasonable for the quality of food and totally worth it. 100% recommended.

Went here for a birthday celebration meal on a Friday night, actually deciding on PaL rather than House of Tides based on Tripadvisor reviews (this time!)

Arrival and welcome was very good - professional but relaxed. Menu was small but a decent amount of variety, and a couple of specials (starter of Crab and Tomato was one, which I went for and it was delicious.)

Portion sizes were pretty reasonable - enough to fill without becoming stuffed (and on asking whether any sides were recommended, we were told we'd gone for probably the smallest mains!) The little mid-courses were also a pleasant surprise (although one of them was duck which was what my partner had chosen for main course).

Food quality was overall very good - perhaps the savory dishes were a tad over-seasoned but they were certainly good quality. And yes, everything was accompanied by 'powder'! A slight let down was the dessert (sharing plate for 2) - we both felt that the selection didn't quite have the imagination that had been put into the other 2 courses.

Food price was very reasonable, as was the wine list which had something for most palettes and budgets. Did come out feeling that the evening had been slightly rushed though. Perhaps it was the intermediate courses but there didn't seem to be any time between the courses to sit back, relax and savor what had just been consumed.

Overall, a welcome addition to the Newcastle restaurant scene and we'll definitely be going back, maybe after HoT though...
