Ryton Country House

Hotel rooms very shabby, my bathroom far too small, no bigger than a cupboard! I believe all are the same after talking to the only other two guests. Staff polite but not over friendly.
However the Restaurant and food was very good, also the situation.

Had Sunday lunch here today,it was very nice, plenty of meat and veg.
Was hoping to have turnip as its my favourite and no one seems to do it.
As it happens cabbage and carrots, but very enjoyable.
Would have loved a dessert as they looked lovely, but couldn't fit one in .

My husband and I stayed at the Ryton Park Hotel for two nights on 6&7th April in room 11. It is a very pleasant, quiet room. The room was spacious and clean, with a dressing room and a bathroom with bath shower over. The staff are very friendly. We mainly only had breakfast which was delicious and plentiful and extremely hot (not something you get everywhere) there as we were going to our friends 60th Wedding Anniversary lunch and a dinner party the night we arrived. On the Sunday evening we didn't need much to eat, but shared a lovely Combo starter which was beautifully presented. We were not disappointed with the Ryton Park and hopefully will stay there again when in the area.

Hadn't visited the North East for nearly five years, but took the opportunity to revisit some very good old friends on our way back to Essex after a pleasant stay in the Lake District. After chatting to one of my acquaintances, things came down to a choice between a large complex in the Metrocentre - probably not suitable for my 90 year-old mother, or a more homely residence closer to the area just to the West of the City centre where our friends were to meet us. The hotel is based in the quiet area known as Ryton village - certainly more tranquil than the Bigg Market, and dates back to the eighteenth century, having previously been a private house and a school, amongst other things. The hotel carries with it an air of warmth and friendliness, with helpful, pleasant and efficient staff. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon - their quiet day as they were quick to inform us - and stopped in the pleasant bar for a quick drink and a sandwich, before booking a table for nine for the evening session. The hotel has a large function room area (The Cheviot Room) in which food is served when the place is busy, but as we appeared to be the only residents our get-togther took place in the bar and outstanding it was too. The food menu was both extensive and very reasonably priced, providing roasts, curries, steaks, chicken dishes and seafood, all of which arrived piping hot and fresh at the table, courtesy of the charming young waitress who certainly had her hands full on her own. The ambience of the place made for a highly relaxed atmosphere, as the nine of us reminisced about past experiences in Corfu, where we all first met many years ago. The bedrooms were comfortable if unspectacular and adequate for our needs, although for those with limited mobility it should be noted that there are no rooms on the ground floor and no lift. Breakfast was taken in the somewhat eerie atmosphere of the large function suite, as we were the only partakers, but in spite of this an excellent array of cold dishes were available, complemented by an equally excellent choice of hot meals. Great to see our old friends again, and we would certainly use the Country House again the next time we visit.

Excellent food plates piping hot.

Eat here on a regular basis. Menu has a good choice.

Female staff very helpful and polite.

Male member of staff calls every one " you Guys".
I find this very annoying and will hope on my next visit I am not served by him.

The place is looking tired, the bar & resturant are not warm so attention to putting in double glazing, improving the heating and decor needs looking at.

Room was so cold that I had to sleep in my clothes under the blankets! The food tasted cheap and microwaved. The lady in charge seemed too strict and highly strung, I felt a complaint about the service or the standard of her hotel would only fall on deaf ears. Avoid at all costs. You have been warned.
