We have been here many times in the past for Sunday Lunch, but not in a few months, so we were looking forward to going back again. Such a disappointment. I don't know what has changed if anything, but the lunch was not up to the standard we had come to expect. All members in our party agreed the beef was hard and dry and the veg undercooked. Ever the optimist, we were hoping the desserts would make up for the lunch, sadly not. The usually moist yummy fudge cake was dry and seemed stale. And the staple favourite of the group being cheesecake, that was a further poor addition to the meal. It may have been just simply an off day, but in all honesty I'm not keen on going back to see if this is infact the case.

We had a small room, with one of the lights not working in the bathroom and very creaky floorboards. The sound proofing between rooms was non existence. Luckily we were asleep before the neighbours went to bed and we were tired. Location was pleasing as it's close to Newcastle but far enough to be quiet and away from the hustle and bustle. Breakfast was served in a beautiful room. Food was ok, but nothing special.
Parking was good.
Would I go again? If I was in the area I would consider it.

As we live only a few miles away, we have never stayed at the Ryton.

We dine there regularly as the food has always been of the highest quality. The plates are piping hot, the quantities are substantial, & the service is always attentive. There is currently an Autumn two-course menu for £9.95, with the three-course alternative only £11.95 if you can manage it.

The food is excellent quality & value; don't be put off it by the guest room reviews if you want somewhere to eat

The room was very small,no room to move around the bed when two of us were in the room. The wardrobe door hit the closing mechanism on the room door, big chunk out of it.Dark room not enough light gets through the window. Worst of all, it was quite dirty, the lampshades on the bedside lamps were thick with dust,i got a tissue to wipe it and it was very dirty. The tea and coffee making stuff was kept inside the bedside cabinet as theres no room elsewhere.I had to wash the kettle lid and kettle before using it,very dusty dirty. The cups were tea stained and the spoon left in the saucer was stuck down with old tea or coffee! yuk!Under the bed there was a dirty old hair bobble from some previous occupant, and really dirty. My partner cleaned the mould off the shower head with some toilet roll; no hot water left at 10 30 am for a shower The bathroom vent was thick with dust.Cobwebs on the window frame and dirty windows. The bottom of the dressing table drawers was broken and just lying on the floor.Wanted to go elsewhere but we were tired after a long journey and were attending a wedding the following day,and I would have lost my deposit!
We did point most of this out to the owner and she was very polite and gave us the story of staff not turning up, but this was more than just a couple of days dust! We were offered a bottle of wine if we dined in the hotel, however we declined, didn't fancy eating there!!
However we did have breakfast the following day and, credit where its due ,was first class.
On checking out we weren't offered any reduction or compensation.
The'' hotel inspector'' would have a field day in here!
The décor and general look of the place is just run down,a coat of paint on the outside rendering wouldn't go amiss!
Needless to say we wont stay here again, budget price ,I don't think so, definitely overpriced rooms and a nice breakfast didn't make it any better.

Room Tip: Choose a different hotel..... sorry

Wanted somewhere handy to stay when attending a party in Clara Vale, so for us ideally situated. The outside of the hotel does look a bit tired so your first thought is is this the sort of place I want to stay, but once inside it was generally fine (please have the stained glass windows on the light well over the staircase cleaned it is spectacular and in its current state detracts rather than adds to the feel of the hotel)The rooms are a little on the small size, but comfortable and perfectly suitable for stopping one or two nights. Clean, tastefully decorated ad furnished with clean bathrooms. No evidence of the more negative comments from some of the reviews. From earlier in the year. The breakfast was excellent and the breakfast room a lovely room. The only complaint would be the size of the tables, for which the waitress apologised as soon as we sat down. It was hard to find space for the coffee, juice and toast rack and a small investment in slightly larger tables would be a good idea. On a more positive note it was really nice to see a hotel with a residents lounge, where you can sit and relax, watch telly or read without having to sit in the bar, this was a big plus for me. For bed and breakfast it was definitely good value for money and seeing some of the food leaving the kitchens for the evening meals it looked like the food was of a high standard as well, so if we stay here gain I would b tempted to have a meal here.
