We came here after a recommendation through family friends who regularly invite us over for delicious home-cooked traditional South East Indian/Sri-Lankan food. Having cooked the real thing and dined in similar restaurants in both India and London we trusted their opinion and were looking forward to sampling some of our favourite dishes from this place.
However, if there's one thing you must know, it's that although the food is delicious and cheap; the service is appalling to the point of sit-come style hilarity.
Starting with the food we opted for traditional Dosas and poori's with curried potatoes, a selection of chutney's, chicken biriyani, panneer, the 'chicken 65' (which is some kind of special spiced chicken dish) and butter masala. Biriyani was tasty with a little kick whilst poori's were just as they should be; fluffy and light. We got all of these dishes plus drinks for three of us for just under £30 which is amazing! Very authentic food that tastes great and has prices which are just as good as the similar authentic restaurants in London.
The big issues may just be teething problems as this place is quite new but one thing that stands out is that the service here is horrendous. Though the staff were not unpleasant, they were just inadvertently rude. We weren't made to feel particularly welcome and despite it being a quiet Monday evening, our meals took a ridiculously long time. Waiters were not chatty or friendly; bringing dishes and drinks over in complete silence, without so much as a smile or a hello - letalone eye contact!
Dishes were brought out one by one from the kitchen - even if they were just side orders of chutney - as though the four staff working that day couldn't possibly carry more than one plate, No apologies were made for any of the delays either. We decided to order more half-way through the meal and it took them up to 20-30 minutes to make a dish we'd already ordered the first time round.
They didn't offer us any recommendations or explain specials considering we said it was our first time here and the serving staff were avoidant in answering questions, even when taking our orders. The main waiter was okay but for the sake of this restaurant, management seriously need to train their staff in the absolute basics of customer service. I suspect this won't bother regulars who already love the food but it's extremely unnerving for new customers and a total shame considering their product is great. However, it's telling that we haven't rushed to go back since. Had the service been better, I would have definitely given a higher rating
This place is overall is a little out of the way but worth it for the delicious authentic food experience which is super cheap and tasty. However, if you go and the service is still not up to scratch, don't bother leaving a tip; they'll soon take the hint.
