“Great quality, great value”
Reviewed 1 January 2012

My wife and I stayed for a week over Christmas and enjoyed excellent hospitality. We subsequently stayed at the Montague in London and the Edouard VII in Paris (both considerably more expensive) and neither were 'within cooee' of this hotel.
We particularly liked the ambience of the public areas and bedrooms, the breakfasts (the best we have enjoyed anywhere - loved the champagne!) and the friendly and professional staff.

We stayed at Jesmond Dene House at the end of last week. We have found ourselves inevitably coming to Newcastle a fair amount as our son is now at Newcastle uni and as we live in Hampshire it makes sense to find somewhere nice to stay for a few days.

We have stayed at the Malmaison a number of times but will no longer be staying there (see earlier review)

We have also stayed at Close House which was very pleasant (see review) but now we come to Jesmond Dene House and this is our review.

It is a wonderful hotel. Its location only a couple of miles out of the main town if that makes it ideal and the actual location in the Dene makes it very special indeed. The garden and grounds appear to be very well maintained indeed and when we no doubt return in the Spring I will look forward to walking around the river to explore the wildlife etc.

As far as the hotel itself goes we were particularly impressed with the helpfulness of the staff - all of them - something that I would not say of the other hotels previously mentioned.

The room itself on the second floor room 24 was a pleasant room but make a few observations which would make a bit of a difference.

The mini bar was excellent. Plenty of stock and tastefully prepared.
The TV appeared to have been limited in terms of volume which was very frustrating but easy to change in the main TV menu (or at least I think that we managed to do so!)

The sheets on the bed were excellent. Spotless and immaculately prepared. Lovely view from the room over the garden - very special indeed.

There was a very comprehensive book with all relevant information inside.

The breakfast was superb with entirely freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juice.

The things that I would ask to be looked at and changed...

- please can there be disposal bags in the bathroom, and a loo brush!
- a loo seat that is comfortable (it has to go down as the most uncomfortable seat I have ever sat on!!)
- a thermostat that works or point out in the helpful book provided that it is merely the radiator control that really works
-finally get the Wi-Fi sorted out please. It was (other than the loo seat!) the most frustrating thing that every time I left the hotel and came back I had to sort it all out again. Very annoying in this day and age and should be better than it is.

We will certainly visit again and will look forward to it - thank you for a very pleasant stay.

I highly recommend Jesmond Dene House, a charming quiet and peaceful country house style hotel near Jesmond Dene with its lovely woodland and riverside walks.

Facilities at the hotel are excellent, food of a high standard and staff extremely helpful and friendly.

The hotel is only a short metro or bus ride from the centre of Newcastle on Tyne from where a yellow bus runs to and from the Sage concert hall and Baltic arts centre by the banks of the Tyne at Gateshead.

The best holiday I have had for a long time.

My sister and I often visit Newcastle and for the first time stayed at the Jesmond Dene House Hotel. We had a wonderful stay which surpassed all our expectations. We were lucky enough to have our room upgraded which was a lovely surprise. Very tasteful and stylish with a mix of classic and modern. We were impressed with the quality of the accommodation, the special additional touches in our room, the superb food but above all, the excellent customer care particularly from the reception staff. We have stayed in quite a few hotels in Newcastle but this hotel beats them all. Ok, the price may be a little higher than many, but what you get for that is quality, value, the best of everything and you really feel like you have had a luxurious break. We most definitely will return to this wonderful hotel.

A one night stay in November.

Room
=====

Excellent. Rooms are tastefully decorated. Comfortable bed. Large modern bathroom with excellent toiletries.

Service
======

Excellent. Professional and helpful without being over friendly and intrusive. The restaurant staff were particularly excellent, guiding us through pre-dinner drinks, meal and wine choices, three courses with an additional three complimentary "tasters", provided helpful information on the provenance of some of the food, and yet were hardly noticeable.

Food
====

Excellent. We can recommend: the crab salad and root vegetable soup as starters; the beef with bearnnaise source and the chicken with potato rosti; the cherry mousse. Breakfast the next morning was of an equallly high standard.

Atmosphere
==========

Jesmond Dene House is a mock-Gothic house, located in the most fashionable area of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. It is decorated in a tasteful, classic style with a few modern pieces in the bar areas. Rooms are modern and comfortable. Guests dress up for dinner. We dined on Friday evening and the restaurant was busy.

Verdict
======

Probably not family-friendly for those with young children, but perfect for a luxurious grown up get-away. Not for a rowdy weekend, hen-night or stag-do.

We have stayed at this hotel three times now and have never been disappointed. The rooms are clean, spacious and extremely comfortable. The staff without exception are friendly, welcoming and the service is excellent.
The hotel is situated in a quiet area of Newcastle and so our break is always relaxing.
We always eat in the restaurant during our stay and would say that in our opinion both the food and service are up to Michelin standard.
We certainly look forward to the next time we go up to Newacastle, and certainly would not hesitate in recommending this hotel.

I came here for my 21st birthday meal and drinks and it was spectacular. I will without doubt be returning to the Jesmond Dene House for special occasions and i see it as a perfect setting for a lovely romantic meal and stay for couples or as i did a family occasion. I will always remember my 21st as being a little taste of luxury and i can not believe the extent the staff go out of their way to make your day or night special. The food was something else, fantastic! There was not a single fault i could give to chef or serving staff. We also had a personal wine connoisseur who make some excellent choices for my table. I was also very struck on the setting and atmosphere which oozes elegance and class even down to the personal towels in the toilets! There was even a special house menu for those who feel it may be a little to much expense for three courses. This menu seemed very affordable but for an occasion like mine i wouldn't hesitate to splash out because of the standard of the all round experience!!
