Description: Blackfriars Restaurant in Newcastle is Britains oldest purpose-built restaurant, dating back to 1239 when it was used as a refectory by hungry monks. Luckily the food is a bit more modern, and the award-winning menu and historical surrounds have made this one of Newcastles most popular restaurants. Whether youre dining in the candlelit medieval banquet hall, the intimate dining room or the garden terrace, be sure to arrive early for a delicious cocktail at the bar. The menu never fails to impress, and favourite dishes include the wild rabbit stew with prunes, roasted almonds and Jerusalem pure and grilled scallops with roast pumpkin, French beans and beetroot coulis. Blackfriars Restaurant has an acclaimed wine list.

Lovely food. Had the fish cakes to start, fish & chips for main and strawberry cheesecake for desert all for £18. Service was great couldn't fault a thing

We found Blackfriars on tripadvisor when visiting Newcastle for the weekend. The surroundings were just delightful. The menu was extensive and there were plenty of options. We really enjoyed the food, the steaks one of the best I have ever had and the wine was excellent. Service was very warm and welcome. Overall a great restaurant worth visiting.

I have wanted to visit this restaurant for quite awhile so took the opportunity on my 10th wedding anniversary. My husband and I had the lunchtime 3 course special menu which is £18 per head....really good value in our opinion for the quality of the food. We were shown to a lovely window table which overlooked the courtyard and were given a complimentary glass of bubbly as it was a special occasion. A nice touch, we thought. The service was good, understated with polite, efficient staff. My husband had good old steak and chips and it was cooked to perfection. We will definitely be back and are keen to try Sunday lunch

Always love the food at blackfriars and this didn't disappoint. Ordered the falafel and walnut bread with a crispy egg for my main and thought the delicate tastes were sublime. Truly delicious. My partner ordered steak medium rare and this was cooked to perfection. All washed down with a delicious rich South African red. We shared a sticky toffee pudding and cheese board to share for dessert. The pudding was delicious, moist, hot, sweet. The cheese board was the only disappointment food wise. Teeny pieces of cheese, poor grapes and limited crackers. Shame as the rest of the food was heavenly. Wouldn't get cheese board again. What is normally good service was lacking on this ocassion. We we're placed in a far corner and were often forgotten. Had to get up twice to ask for service- once to take main course plates away and second time to ask for bill. Shame as they would've gotten more money from us as we were enjoying the wine and would have had more. Love love love the good though
