Description: Newcastle's Mandarin Restaurant is easy to spot from the street, being colourfully fronted with greens, reds and gold in traditional Chinese style. The colours continue inside, creating a relaxed atmosphere of authenticity in which to enjoy your meal. As well as offering pre and post-theatre dinners, the Mandarin also has its famous banquets that offer dishes such as lamb with ginger and spring onions, king prawns in black bean sauce chilli and garlic fish - all for a fixed price; the Jade banquet costs £15 per person. The Mandarin uses fresh ingredients and is very popular locally.

“Extremely tasty food, served in a calm organised manner”
Reviewed 6 July 2014 via mobile

Decided to pop out for a quick Chinese meal using my taste card. Chose this restaurant which we hadn't been to for years. Booked a table for 3 and arrived to find a few tables occupied. Had a lovely meal of soup, starters, duck and main courses. All food was delicious, hot and arrived promptly. The staff were friendly and professional and made us feel very welcome. We will definitely return soon. Thanks

“Give it a miss”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

Went to this Restaurant on Saturday evening. First thing we were told was "the card machine is not working". It is amazing how many Restaurants have this problem.
The starter came and was pretty good. After this it all went downhill. Two"ladies" came in and decided they were there to spoil everyone's evening.
Complaining to the management as we and other couples did was met with indifference.
My main course of Chicken Chow Mein was more of a soup with bean thread noodles.
My advice, there are plenty of Restaurants on Stowell Street, given this one a miss as I doubt if it will survive with the present standards.

“Great find”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

Visited this restaurant on a recent visit to Newcastle. Whilst we were a bit concerned that it was fairly quiet, we were delighted with our choice in the end. The menu is huge and there is a great variety of dishes available. The service was great and everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable Chinese meal. Would definitely recommend!

“Think they ripped us off too!”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

Decided upon here as it said it accepted Taste Card and we were very tired after a long drive up from Blackpool.

We get inside and we're the ONLY ones in..On a bank holiday Friday that's poor really. Anyway.. We've never let that stop us. The menu is big. Lots of choice... We settled on lots of starters no mains.
(Also just to add it was roasting inside! I stepped out for some icey northern air. Think the fish tanks they have cause it to be quite hot- sub tropical temps! That and we were sat directly under 2 spot lights...HOT)

Dumplings
Meat mix and lettuce leaves
Wonton soup
Ribs
Golden bag (fried wontons)
DRINKS
1 PNT coke...half pnt stella.

Dumplings: Good.. sui mai. and har kau

MM Lettuce: Our fave. Really good savoury blend. So tasty

Wonton soup: The wontons let it down really... odd tasting wontons like they'd been frozen in a glacier for a millennium. Broth ok but lacked taste. Good veg..lots of it. Lots of soy sauce needed. Not many wontons either.

Ribs: The worst part of it. Over fried.. bitter and way too salty. Gave us salt burned mouths. REALLY hard to grab a bit off them without really gnawing at them with your teeth. You could taste the cooking oil too. We left half of them

Fried wontons: Again ok but not great! Lacked any chinese flavour i swear there were just sausage inside it. Odd.

It was meant to be a cheap meal too 2 for 1...we paid nearly £25 for 5 starters ALL under £5 and 2 drinks one soft one a half a stella. We were just too darn tired to argue..paid..and left. We wont be back.
