“Amazing experience in an awesome venue with great service.”

We stayed in the Mill this summer and we had a great time! When we first arrived we were impressed with the very quaint exterior of the converted mill surrounded by the idyllic little garden. The interior is just as impressive with modern appliances and contemporary design. However if you have trouble with stairs be prepared... There are six flights to the top bedroom. This did not dampen our experience at all as the mill is just such a blast. The owner stocked the kitchen with more than basic foods including: beer, wine, eggs, milk, bread, tea, and coffee. All bedrooms have a tv and the mill is covered by a wifi network which was wonderful. Overall we had a fantastic stay and would highly recommend the mill!

“A great place to escape”
Reviewed 12 June 2010 for a stay in May 2010

The Mill is a fantastic place to stay if ever you get the chance. My girlfriend and I were a bit cheeky and booked for a midweek break only a week before we planned to go, due to the ash cloud problem. Simon (the owner) was great and showed us all around the main mill building and given a guided tour of the grounds / cottage and the facilities provided.

Long nights in the hot tub with a glass of champagne and barbecues in the evening sun and sleeping in a 4 poster bed. This place was an absolute steal for the price!

Simon - We'll be back, and thanks for a great week!

“What a shame that our experience did not live up to our expectations”

We stayed at Braunston Mill for a long weekend and were very excited about the experience. However, upon arrival we were met by the owner who showed us around and asked for a cheque for £150 pounds. As fellow holiday home owners we were suprised at this but were assured that if there were no problems then it would be sent back to us in the post. We were also reminded that we were to leave £10 per usage of the jacuzzi, and that there were a number of house rules that had to be observed. I have to admit that when you are paying about six hundred pounds for a weekend, you expect things like that to be included. Being a group of 5 ranging from 30 years to 70 years, I did not anticipate any problems.

It is imperative to note that you are expected to clean the house thoroughly and throughout before you leave. We left the house clean and tidy and emptied the bins and I was certain that I would receive the cheque in the next few days. However, the following week I received a parcel from the Mill containing wash bags and medication that did not even belong to us. I then discovered that the cheque had been banked. We had no note in the package to explain what they had done, and no notification whatsoever of them retaining the deposit money. We then contacted the owner who stated that we had left the house in a disgusting state and they had to take half the deposit for a clean. This is absolutely ridiculous as we regularly stay away and have never received any negative feedback. They also tried to tell us that the wash bags etc... did in fact belong to us despite us telling them that the medication was named, and was nothing to do with us. I was horrified by their comments and we argued the point and received a small amount back. I was flabbergasted by the rude and objectionable attitude of the owner. We were patronised and spoken to like imbeciles.

I cannot fault Braunston Mill for the accomodation. It is a great location and the Mill itself is comfortable and quirky. However, it is certainly not worth the hassle of the aftermath. I go away to relax and would expect the accomodation to be cleaned between lets, just as ours is. I do not expect to go away and have to clean the house completely before leaving to the standards of the british cleaning institute which the owner claimed to be a member of! The whole experience was stressful and unpleasant and I feel there are unrealistic expectations placed upon guestswho pay a lot of money to stay at the premises. Needless to say that we will not be returning.

Without Predjudice
We have offered self catering accommodation for some 5+ years in which time we have only needed to make the additional cleaning charge on 4 occasions. This review is very one sided and we would like to take this opportunity to present our thoughts. As like many independent owners we request a security deposit which is refundable after your stay subject to the property being left in a clean and tidy state and no breakages. This is clearly stated within our terms and conditions and not as the reviewer would wish you to believe a shock on arrival. We do NOT expect our guests to carry out a thorough clean as this reviewer tries to make you believe. All of our properties are presented in the highest manner and each receives a thorough clean between each stay. Why we make an additional charge is when a guests leaves the property in such a state that extra cleaning is required. We did NOT charge this guest £75 as inferred but £50 as agreed with the reviewers partner. We have never been rude to the reviewer and have never spoken to the reviewer on the telephone. As far as the items returned these have never been returned so we can only assume that some if not all of these DID belong to a member of the reviewer’s party. We have not left negative feedback anywhere for the reviewer or any member of their party. We are very disappointed to see a fellow holiday home owner take such an aggressive stance against us. They use the fact that as holiday cottage owners they carry expertise in holiday accommodation . We would suggest they look at the latest comments left for their cottage which start “whilst the cottage was superficially clean, there was a lot of dust and dirt on the floors underneath furniture and rugs”.
We are sorry that they took exception to the charge made but we had to cover the costs of the extra time required to bring the property back to the standards we wish our guests to receive.

“Rules and rudeness not what you expect on a holiday!”

Our stay at the Mill was somewhat ruined by the rules and the rudeness of the owners. We were a group of 6 girls looking forward to a relaxing break away from our busy jobs for the weekend. Unfortunately, when we booked (over the phone) we didn’t know that the Mill did not accept single sex parties, the first 2 people in our group who arrived notified the owners of this to make them aware. The owners agreed they were happy for us all to stay; however we were later to find out that they definitely were not happy with the arrangement.

The owner’s wife was incredibly rude to us and spoke to us like children! Apparently, we had parked in the wrong place (on the drive), but instead of asking politely if we could move our cars she was abrupt and rude in the way she asked, definitely no need for that and quite uncalled for.

Half an hour later her husband returned asking us to leave after just 2 hours as we had broken the terms by having a single sex party, which 2 hours ago they agreed to??? He agreed to let us stay but obviously we were all quite surprised up by what had happened, wondering if they were going to come back and kick us out in the middle of the night. They didn’t return until the next day, where they were doing some gardening, but whether genuine or not it seemed like they were spying on us and made us feel quite uncomfortable (and not relaxed as the weekend was all about).

The actually Mill is very nicely decorated and fully equipped, however the house is full of rules, you can’t seem to turn a corner without being told not to do something, not what I want to see when I’m on holiday!

The hot tub is part of the accommodation and yet you have to pay an extra £10 per usage, which seems a bit strange, I would have thought that would have been included in the price? There was also no alcohol allowed in the hot tub?

Finally, on leaving the property, following ‘the rules’ you have to clean the entire place, bathrooms, kitchen, floors and whilst I’m not adverse to a bit of cleaning it does seem a bit strange? I wouldn’t have left the place in a mess but you’ve just spent a weekend relaxing and then you have to go on a cleaning mission! I don’t think it helped that we were all a bit paranoid after out initial altercation that we weren’t going to get our deposit back.

All in all a beautiful property but a shame they have ruined it with the rules and their rude attitude.

We admit we made a serious mistake here in that we should not have allowed this party to stay. The property was booked by the reviewer EMU999 who states that this was a family trip. This booking was NOT made over the phone but via our online booking system on 31/01/10 where are terms and conditions are shown and the person booking is ask to agree to these terms We confirmed this booking with EMU999 on 07/02/2010 by post and included with this confirmation a hard copy of these terms. We sent a further hard copy of the terms and conditions after receiving the final balance payment on 11/03/2010. Our terms are very simple and 1a clearly states “Single sex parties are not accepted (Non couples). It is clearly the responsibility of the lead name who accepted these conditions to advise us if they are a single sex party.
On arrival we endeavour to welcome every single guest to our properties personally as we do believe in customer service. When the first of these guests arrived and advised us that they were a single sex group we were very concerned. They pleaded with us to allow them to stay which trying to give great customer service we allowed them to stay. The car they had travelled in was parked across the access road to our other property so we very politely asked if they could park this car in 1 of the two allocated spaces. This was as they state at 4pm. We asked that the other guest car was parked alongside this car as our other property guests were due later. We were then given the security deposit which the party had already prepared.
At 6pm our other guests arrived and when we went to welcome them we found that their entrance was blocked by a car. The Mill guests knew they had arrived but left the car blocking the road, even waving to them. We again politely asked if they could move the vehicle and they became very rude and aggressive. So much so our other guests were taken aback. However we let this pass. About 30 minutes later we received a phone call from a neighbour reporting unruly behaviour emanating from The Mill garden. I did go back down and stated clearly that if this was how the group intended to act during the weekend then we must ask them to leave. What followed was not a pleasant experience but I calmed three of the group down and we reached an agreement, and as such the party stayed for the weekend. We are most disappointed that after allowing the party to stay, even though we were in our rights to not allow this, they have subjected us to these reports which are unfounded.
As we are answering all 3 in the same manner we would also like to confirm that we did not pretend to garden so as to spy on them. Our guests in our cottage informed us that the barbeque was not working on 1 burner so went out immediately and purchased a new one. We were installing this as we DO understand customer service.
We returned the deposit immediately to this group in full as we do with the majority of our guests.
If members have issues with their stay we would suggest they take this up with the lead name who booked the weekend without reading the terms and conditions and not subjecting us to this barrage of unfounded reports.

“A weekend to remember for all the wrong reasons...”

Please be aware on booking the Mill that car parking must be adhered to, please take notes as any misunderstanding of this matter will be met with negativity and you may be asked to leave! I consider myself 'well traveled' but have never experienced such a poor level of hospitality. Please also note that not included in the costs you will pay for the Mill are the cleaning costs (£75) so after your relaxing weekend expect to spend the last of your time cleaning the place from top to bottom, including taking out the rubbish...
