The mill is extremely easy to find. As soon as you get close and you see the church spire, the falic shape of the mill is close by. The drive up to the front door is lovely. IThis self catering mill certainly has the wow factor as soon as you step through the door. Each floor has been decorated to a high quality. There's everything you need - fully equipped kitechen including some wine, basic essentials, cereals etc , hair dryers, straightners, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and the thickest towels I've ever used!
There are 3 rooms, all great - the first one is the smallest and the bed is pretty small. For a weekend it's fine but I think a couple would struggle to sleep comfortably in there for a week.
The main bathroom was great with a whirlpool bath (although we didn't try that out) and a very fancy pod shower however disappointingly the electrics didn't work or we were doing something wrong.
We read the previous reviews before going but we didn't experience any of the negatives. We were the last to arrive so didn't meet the owners but we only heard great things about them. The hot tub was good fun but you did get very hot in there.
The Old Plough just raound the corner was a great pub with good quality home cooked food. We dropped a cake and some decorations off the night before as it was our friends 40th and when we got to the pub they had decorated the table brilliantly. We also ate at the Boathouse which is a chain pub. It didn't have the same atmosphere but the food was good.
A must is to walk into the village and then cut down to the canal and walk back to the mill along there. It's a really lovely walk and lots of boats to see. There's also a barge cafe on there which is supposed to do good breakfasts. There's a lot to do and places to visit close by altohugh we couldn't justify £25 to go into Warwick Castle but we got a good view of it on a boat from the canal.
We were lucky to be invited to the Mill for our friends 40th and there was 6 of us. We had a brllliant time and it was somewhere a bit different to stay of high quality. If you like luxury I would recomend a stay there.
We stayed in the Mill this summer and we had a great time! When we first arrived we were impressed with the very quaint exterior of the converted mill surrounded by the idyllic little garden. The interior is just as impressive with modern appliances and contemporary design. However if you have trouble with stairs be prepared... There are six flights to the top bedroom. This did not dampen our experience at all as the mill is just such a blast. The owner stocked the kitchen with more than basic foods including: beer, wine, eggs, milk, bread, tea, and coffee. All bedrooms have a tv and the mill is covered by a wifi network which was wonderful. Overall we had a fantastic stay and would highly recommend the mill!
The Mill is a fantastic place to stay if ever you get the chance. My girlfriend and I were a bit cheeky and booked for a midweek break only a week before we planned to go, due to the ash cloud problem. Simon (the owner) was great and showed us all around the main mill building and given a guided tour of the grounds / cottage and the facilities provided.
Long nights in the hot tub with a glass of champagne and barbecues in the evening sun and sleeping in a 4 poster bed. This place was an absolute steal for the price!
Simon - We'll be back, and thanks for a great week!
We stayed at Braunston Mill for a long weekend and were very excited about the experience. However, upon arrival we were met by the owner who showed us around and asked for a cheque for £150 pounds. As fellow holiday home owners we were suprised at this but were assured that if there were no problems then it would be sent back to us in the post. We were also reminded that we were to leave £10 per usage of the jacuzzi, and that there were a number of house rules that had to be observed. I have to admit that when you are paying about six hundred pounds for a weekend, you expect things like that to be included. Being a group of 5 ranging from 30 years to 70 years, I did not anticipate any problems.
It is imperative to note that you are expected to clean the house thoroughly and throughout before you leave. We left the house clean and tidy and emptied the bins and I was certain that I would receive the cheque in the next few days. However, the following week I received a parcel from the Mill containing wash bags and medication that did not even belong to us. I then discovered that the cheque had been banked. We had no note in the package to explain what they had done, and no notification whatsoever of them retaining the deposit money. We then contacted the owner who stated that we had left the house in a disgusting state and they had to take half the deposit for a clean. This is absolutely ridiculous as we regularly stay away and have never received any negative feedback. They also tried to tell us that the wash bags etc... did in fact belong to us despite us telling them that the medication was named, and was nothing to do with us. I was horrified by their comments and we argued the point and received a small amount back. I was flabbergasted by the rude and objectionable attitude of the owner. We were patronised and spoken to like imbeciles.
I cannot fault Braunston Mill for the accomodation. It is a great location and the Mill itself is comfortable and quirky. However, it is certainly not worth the hassle of the aftermath. I go away to relax and would expect the accomodation to be cleaned between lets, just as ours is. I do not expect to go away and have to clean the house completely before leaving to the standards of the british cleaning institute which the owner claimed to be a member of! The whole experience was stressful and unpleasant and I feel there are unrealistic expectations placed upon guestswho pay a lot of money to stay at the premises. Needless to say that we will not be returning.
Our stay at the Mill was somewhat ruined by the rules and the rudeness of the owners. We were a group of 6 girls looking forward to a relaxing break away from our busy jobs for the weekend. Unfortunately, when we booked (over the phone) we didn’t know that the Mill did not accept single sex parties, the first 2 people in our group who arrived notified the owners of this to make them aware. The owners agreed they were happy for us all to stay; however we were later to find out that they definitely were not happy with the arrangement.
The owner’s wife was incredibly rude to us and spoke to us like children! Apparently, we had parked in the wrong place (on the drive), but instead of asking politely if we could move our cars she was abrupt and rude in the way she asked, definitely no need for that and quite uncalled for.
Half an hour later her husband returned asking us to leave after just 2 hours as we had broken the terms by having a single sex party, which 2 hours ago they agreed to??? He agreed to let us stay but obviously we were all quite surprised up by what had happened, wondering if they were going to come back and kick us out in the middle of the night. They didn’t return until the next day, where they were doing some gardening, but whether genuine or not it seemed like they were spying on us and made us feel quite uncomfortable (and not relaxed as the weekend was all about).
The actually Mill is very nicely decorated and fully equipped, however the house is full of rules, you can’t seem to turn a corner without being told not to do something, not what I want to see when I’m on holiday!
The hot tub is part of the accommodation and yet you have to pay an extra £10 per usage, which seems a bit strange, I would have thought that would have been included in the price? There was also no alcohol allowed in the hot tub?
Finally, on leaving the property, following ‘the rules’ you have to clean the entire place, bathrooms, kitchen, floors and whilst I’m not adverse to a bit of cleaning it does seem a bit strange? I wouldn’t have left the place in a mess but you’ve just spent a weekend relaxing and then you have to go on a cleaning mission! I don’t think it helped that we were all a bit paranoid after out initial altercation that we weren’t going to get our deposit back.
All in all a beautiful property but a shame they have ruined it with the rules and their rude attitude.
Please be aware on booking the Mill that car parking must be adhered to, please take notes as any misunderstanding of this matter will be met with negativity and you may be asked to leave! I consider myself 'well traveled' but have never experienced such a poor level of hospitality. Please also note that not included in the costs you will pay for the Mill are the cleaning costs (£75) so after your relaxing weekend expect to spend the last of your time cleaning the place from top to bottom, including taking out the rubbish...
