Stratford has a huge number of eateries but as I quite fancied fish and chips I decided to give Barnaby's a try. Decor was very basic and didn't look like it had had a lick of paint for years - whole establishment needs an urgent makeover. As I was on my own, this wasn't a major issue.

I ordered haddock and chips was cooked to order in 10 minutes. 8 minutes would have been better as it arrived slightly over cooked and starting to dry a little. Portion size was good, as was the quality of the fish. Service was OK. Sauces were at extra cost, which is rather stingy.

Barnaby's is OK but doesn't come close to fish and chip restaurants I'm used to living near the coast, which shouldn't be the case. It's a shame that with so many tourists visiting Stratford this prime location establishment doesn't try a bit harder.

We had young friends visiting from Nottingham and so as we were in town, we went for fish and chips.

The portions are really good and you get quite a lot. It is very confusing regarding where to queue and so on, we were waiting a while whilst a member of staff shouted an order to whichever customer and we did feel ignored. There was no chat between staff and customers, just a miserable face and a 'what do you want?' attitude.

There was also no gluten-free option available which is a shame.

Also a little pricey but that's to be expected for central Stratford-upon-Avon.

we spent a lovely 3 hours in stratford to day, this little town never fails to please, the river walk, the street buskers and entertainers, the brass band on the green, even the weather was good to us, before we left, we called in to a fish restaurant, BARNABYS in sheep street, it was in a good location overlooking the theatre, that is about all it has going for it, it was neither cheap or cheerfull, we have had better prepared food, and more helpfull and concerned staff from some transport cafe's, we gave it two stars, but only for the location,

Just a tip from someone who has know this place since the 1980's. Avoid it. All the tourists go there because of the location but I've always found the food awful. If you want decent fish and chips go to the Big Fish on the Maybird, or if you are walking Ely Street will be far better. The classic tourist ripoff as they don't need repeat trade IMHO
