It is easy to come unstuck in a place like Stratford when searching for pub food with so many tourists sometimes bog-standard is the best one can hope for & many are just chains.
Not so the Old Tharch. A friend who lives locally highly recommended it & she was spot on.
Firstly it is a beautiful old place. Not right in the centre of tourist action which may be all to the good. It is stunning inside with a seperate dining area. We were greeted very warmly by a charming young man who would be a credit to any hospitality business, he made us feel very welcome & looked after us perfectly all the time we were there. Food is served throughout the day & we were there for a very early dinner.
There is also a pretty little courtyard garden to the rear which would be lovely for a drink in the sun.
This is one of the very best pub meals I have ever had & we eat in pubs a lot. Everything is genuinely *home made*. Husband had haddock, chips & mushy peas, he said it was all delicious. I went for the pie of the day, minced beef & onion. Sounds ordinary? Not so! A PROPER pie, oven baked the traditional way, not a bit of meat stuck in a small dish with a piece of pasty stuck on top. Served with the most delicous chunky chips (new pots an alternative), four fresh vegetables & REAL gravy served in a little jug to pour over. Good sized helpings. Merlot & Shiraz by the glass was very good.
So, whenever we are in Stratford (which we visit quite a lot) we will eat here. This is exactly what a pub meal should be but so rarely is these days. And the young man who looked after us really deserves a pat on the back.
