“Wonderful hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2011

We chose this hotel based on the rating from this website and we were not disappointed. In fact, it was about the best thing that we found in Stratford-upon-Avon. On arrival, we were shown to our room by the very helpful receptionist. I found it very cute that each room is named after a tree. Our room was extremely large and exceptionally clean. Whilst our view was of the car-park, it was extremely quiet. The bathroom was spotless and large and the bath was a very good size!

We took a drink in the bar and whilst it is a very modern place, the staff were particularly slow. Even with a limited cocktail menu, the barman asked if I knew how to make the cocktail because he hadn't been shown. When I invited him to mix up a couple shots, he wasn't best pleased. With about 6 people waiting on drinks, I waited a good ten minutes each time I went to the bar!

The hotel is definitely on the nice side of town and is very relaxing area with the river flowing by. A real treat was to sit on the veranda having breakfast in the sun on Sunday morning. The inclusive breakfast was excellent and I couldn't find fault.

A nice touch is the fact that you can get DVDs in the reception and each room has a DVD player.

Stratford itself is kind of cute in parts but seems to be very rough. There wasn't much to do there other than see a play or go visit Shakespeare's house, which is quite expensive. If you are going to visit the town then stay in a nice hotel with a relaxing bar and I would highly recommend this one! If I could recommend one thing, it would be to ensure that the bar staff are trained and work a bit faster in serving drinks! They were extremely slow!

After 2 nights from hell in the Lake District at what was the worst hotel we have ever experienced, anything was going to be better. However, The Arden is an example of an exceptional hotel with fantastic design, great location, beautiful rooms, delicious food and outstanding service. We would not only return to Stratford to stay in this hotel again, we would travel back to England for another night there!

It is obvious that a great deal of money has been spent on this property recently. We spent the night in a lovely suite which was extremely generous in size, very well appointed, excellently laid out and design and very comfortable.

Excellent dinner and a beautiful drink on the terrace beforehand while enjoying sunset, a view of the river and the Shakespeare Theatre right in front of you.

Simply brilliant, don't hesitate to book and stay another night if you can!

We stayed the night at The Arden for Mothers Day. My partner and our son. The room was a fabulous size and was perfectly turned out. Our 1 year old was catered for which was brilliant as we often find taking him away causes problems with asking for cots.
The food was delicious and the location was perfect. We will stay again. Loved it!

As soon as we entered the car park with the neatly manicured foliage, the anticipation grew. We were not disappointed. The reception area was bright and spacious and it was a real delight to be upgraded to a better room - without asking! The room was wonderful - a king size bed, seating area and a spacious en-suite.We sneaked a peek at other rooms - they all appeared to be furnished in the same way as ours and I think the difference in cost relates to the size of room. I like to read late at night and often the lighting is inadequate. Not so at The Arden - there were defined reading areas and the bedside lamp was functional as well as stylish. Breakfast was superb, although as a vegetarian, the sausages were a bit bland. We ate dinner in the restaurant one evening and were pleasantly surprised by the wonderful food at a very reasonable rate. (Leave room for a pudding - they are works of art!) The terrace bar opposite the Swan Theatre is a lovely place to unwind = especially as the hotel now offers a range of champagnes by the glass. We didn't have time to use the residents' bar, but then you should always save something for the next visit. We will be back to this special place.

Room Tip: Closest hotel to the RSC. Bliss!

I was staying at the hotel for a trip to the theatre. I hadnt stayed before but a family member had and had recommended it. We arrived to a very warm welcome from the receptionist. The room we had been given was decorated beautifully and everything was clean and well presented. The bathroom was spacious and the products provided were lovely.
We sat outside on the terrace for a glass of champagne and just watched the world go by. It is very tranquil and peaceful.
When we returned from the theatre our bed had been turned down and water provided by your bedside which was a nice touch. It again was very peaceful and we had a good night sleep.
Breakfast in the morning was cooked from fresh and it was a perfect end to a perfect stay.
All the staff are friendly and polite and cant do enough for you. I will be returning as soon as possible.

First class

We’re regular visitors to Stratford upon Avon and have stayed at several hotels in and around the town. When we last stayed at this hotel it was a Thistle hotel and despite being rather tired and threadbare we always enjoyed visiting, mainly due to the excellent location.

The Arden has clearly undergone a transformation. The car park seems more spacious than before and the reception area is better located. Finding your room though, through the myriad of creaking corridors, is still just as challenging.

I guess the hotel wasn’t too full as we got an upgrade from a deluxe to a master room (for which many thanks) – the room was large, comfortable and well equipped as was the bathroom with separate bath and shower (no air-con though which some fussier folk might have a gripe about in the summer months although it didn’t bother us).

Overall the place is very professionally run. The Staff that we met were generally friendly, welcoming and efficient (even “Mr Bumble” the breakfast waiter). Only very minor complaint is we were woken up early on one morning by some noise from an adjoining property, only half a mushroom with the full English breakfast and the HUGE spider that my partner Daphne discovered amongst her undies stowed away in her holdall. It takes a very brave creature to go any where near Daphne’s undies and it was lucky to escape by being merely hoisted out onto the window sill.

We liked:
- Location – next to the theatre and a short stroll from the centre of town
- Problem free parking
- Being escorted to our room
- Spacious well equipped comfortable bedroom
- Very nice bathroom with separate bath and shower
- Plentiful hanging space
- Quality flat screen TV
- Pleasant bar/ brasserie - prompt and friendly service

We didn’t like:
- Some early morning noise from an adjoining property
- Only half a mushroom with the cooked breakfast (is there a mushroom shortage at the Arden?)
- Having to leave – if we were rich enough we’d like to go and live at the Arden.

If you wanted to be any nearer to the RSC, you'd be on stage. This is a Beautiful hotel with first-class staff and facilities bang opposite the river and RSC. The Arden cleverly blends old and new, providing comfortable bedrooms with tasteful common areas. Much of the older part of the building has been given the 'Farrow & Ball' treatment with shades of grey everywhere, but they haven't gone too far in trying to make it cutting-edge. Many of the original features remain, but updated in a sympathetic manner. Our room was in the older part of the hotel and, given that we paid a reasonable, but not excessive amount, it was very comfortable. Contemporary furniture; massive bed with heavyweight cotton duvet and newly fitted shower-room made it one of the more comfortable rooms we've had. The staff, from reception to waiters were impeccably polite and spotted any request even before we had a chance to make it. Parking is at a premium in Stratford, but the hotel has its own large car park at the rear of the hotel, which is free. We didn't eat in the hotel, but the dining room overlooks the river and looked a very pleasant place to have a meal. In Summer, it'd be a fantastic venue for a wedding or al fresco dining. We ate in 'The Opposition' restaurant a two-minute walk away and the food was excellent – as was the service. It would be wise to book if one wanted to eat in the main dining area, but we were grateful to be accommodated as 'walk-ins' and had a table in the rear addition. I would recommend the Arden to anyone visiting Stratford-upon-Avon as an excellent base from which to spend a few days sightseeing.
