“good but could be better”
Reviewed 19 July 2011

We have stayed in Stratford regularly for many years and decided to try the newly re furbed Arden.
Initially shown to a room we found disappointing , small, hot and potentially noisy . We asked to change and were shown to another slightly larger slightly cooler room. The room was nice but a bit corporate , bathroom was lovely >
The bed was fabulous, gorgeous thick white sheets and very comfy. The corridors and some rooms were unbearably hot and unpleasant because of this , discussion with reception did not really explain this , this needs addressing. Breakfast and dinner was ok but not special the service in the restaurant was not as calm and invisible as I would have liked , shortage of staff produced obvious stress.
Obviously great setting opposite the theatre , however on this sunny wend it was hard to get a table on the terrace to have a drink , not good when you are resident. The hotel is top dollar but misses on several counts, having said that probably the best Stratford has for it's captive audience currently.

Stayed here for 1 night after attending Ladies Day at Stratford Races. We were upgraded by three level!!! Stayed in the "Monkey Puzzle" room, everything about the Hotel was first class. Booked through "Small Hotels of the World", right opposite the RSC with views over the river. Would visit again without hesitation

What a great location. Friendly staff. Affordable prices. Right across the street from the theatre, just a block away from the main part of town. The rooms have all been redone in a contemporary style, and they are both large and comfortable. It's the kind of place that has free water in the frig, apples on your desk, free wifi, and L'Occitane toiletries. In other words, they aren't nickel and diming you. This is on my list of places I'd go back to.

Stayed here in May for two nights with my husband, sister and brother in law. We booked the basic room, but upon arrival were upgraded - fantastic start!
We stayed in the Ash room and my sister and BIL stayed in one of the 'B' tree rooms. Our room was just gorgeous. Lovely large (and comfy) bed, amazingly huge bathroom and a nice big TV, with a little sitting area. You also get 2 free bottles of water a day, sparkling and still. Internet was free for us, we were given a password which lasted the whole time.
The rate we got included breakfast, and it was a made to order hot breakfast with a continental buffet for cereal, breads etc. It was very tasty, and the staff were nice. We didn't eat at the restaurant other than breakfast, but my sister and brother in law enjoyed afternoon tea on the terrace outside.
The hotel is located right in front of the Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre, and the River Avon, and it is a perfect location. Basically inbetween the 3 Shakespeare Trust houses and a short walk from the church that Shakespeare is buried at. The town itself is very walkable.
The hotel has its own private car park and you get there from Chapel Lane (one way from Church Street). The car park wasn't too full. My only complaint with this is the entrance is the exit as well, and if there is another car coming, you might not be able to see it around the corner (high fence) and may have a crash... that is if you are unlucky to have another car come at the same time.
The one (MAJOR) problem with this hotel, and this has been mentioned by other reviewers, is that the corridor and the rooms are ridiculously hot. The first night it didn't bother us, but the second night we were so hot that we had to use the fan that is provided (located in the wardrobe) and had the window open. It still bordered on unbearable - similar to a hot Queensland summer night! The hotel didn't really address what the problem was, but it obviously has continued into June, which isn't really acceptable.
The problem of the heat has made me list this as a 4 star review instead of a 5 star.
If they fix the heat problem, then it will most definitely be a 5/6 star property!

If you are looking for a high quality hotel in Stratford I think this is your best bet and on that basis I thoroughly recommend it (the only other place that looked worth trying from the outside was the Church Street Townhouse). And there is much to like about the Arden. But in fairness I must point out its faults too.
First the positives: an excellent location directly behind the RSC and close to the river; a brasserie serving delicious food with a decent wine list; seriously comfortable bed (why aren't all hotel beds like this?) with truly perfect pillows (and I am a pillow perfectionist) and gorgeous egyptian cotton bedlinen; a duvet on request rather than blankets (I seriously rate this attention to giving you options); truly gigantic and glamorous bathroom, L'Occitaine toiletries, tea and coffee tray with water and milk in the fridge, a real hairdryer, flat screen tv and dvd player. All made for a very comfortable experience. In short, I liked it.
But sadly not a boutique hotel in any true sense (e.g. compare and contrast with the wonderful Queensberry in Bath). We arrived at the hotel in the evening after a long journey. I had pre-advised the hotel of the exact time of our arrival. We waited for someone to come and staff the reception desk. She made no attempt to identify us by arrival time. We were then given instructions as to how to find our room - so we struggled up the stairs and down the corridors with our bags and then had to work out where everything was in our room. No air conditioning anywhere in the hotel. Because the hotel has enclosed corridors and low ceilings this meant it was very hot indeed, even on what was quite a cool weekend. I dread to think what it would be like on a truly balmy summer's night. We had a deluxe room - with a panoramic view of the car park. Not very romantic. Nothing in the minibar except water and milk (we wanted to enjoy a nightcap in our room). Finally, the furnishing and decoration while of a good quality were a corporate take on "boutique" - the same in every room, no personal touches, no charm, no individuality. Disappointing. The staff were mainly young and female. All very friendly but not necessarily very competent. A serious lack of management was evident throughout the hotel and restaurant. Come on Arden Hotel - you're good, but you could be great with the right manager and a little bit of self expression. Why not take that leap?

Room Tip: Ask what your room will overlook.

Had a lovely stay in the hotel ideal location fir the RSC. Very welcoming upon arrival. The room and ajoining bathroom was very nice, but I would have expected a bigger room as we upgraded to a deluxe bedroom. Just a little on the small side.

I stopped at the Arden Hotel at the beginning of July 2011.
It was fantastic!!
Excellent friendly (ready to help you in anyway possible) staff greet youwith a smile and complete a flawless check in they also take u to your room.
Facilities and cleanliness are second to none.
The Hotel is so close to the theatre and the river, also shops and the centre of Stratford are just short walks away!!
I would recommend this hotel to my friends and family and will definitely be going back!! Would be a fantastic hotel for a romantic weekend and visit to theatre!!
Excellent - Thank you Arden Hotel!
