“Lovely break away with hubby for our wedding anniversary.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 September 2012

Stayed weekend 8th September. Was the last weekend of sunny weather which was great having breakfast outside on the terrace. Hotel was very welcoming plus our hotel room was lovely we stayed in the Larch. Was very quite on this side of the hotel which was surprising as there was a little road outside. So we had a great sleep at night.
We went on a weekend deal which included evening meals.
Food was lovely but on some dishes there was a little too much going on, seemed to be trying too hard.
The service was a little poor, hey need to just having one waiter/waitress serving you in the evening plus at breakfast. You ask for extra toast and it takes ages to come then u nearly end up with 2x extra toast as you order mod more.

My wife and I stayed at the Arden Hotel in a "Master Room" (Apple Suite) from Aug 25-29. Overall, the property was very nice and we would highly recommend it if you are staying in Stratford. Our additional feedback on the property is as follows:

Cost - The hotel is pricey and based on our research, it is at the very high-end for accommodations in Stratford. Our rate included a breakfast plan which helped offset some costs, but if you are looking for inexpensive accommodations, this is not the right hotel for you.

Location - The hotel is perfectly located if you are interested in seeing shows at the RSC and generally exploring the area. It is situated directly across from the RSC on the Avon river and very near to all of the main areas of the city center. Additionally, our room was located towards the back of the hotel and we had no trouble with noise that other rooms towards the front may have dealt with.

Accommodations - The room was effectively a suite as it had a separate area with a sofa, two chairs, and a coffee table. The bed was a very large king size and very comfortable. The bathroom appeared to have been very recently remodeled and boasted a separate jacuzzi style tub in addition to a shower, sink, and toilet. Additional perks included a towel warmer in the bathroom and a small mini-fridge that was stocked with bottled water for consumption at no extra charge. Our room also had a flat screen television and dvd player. A large assortment of dvd's was available to guests at the front desk.

Dining - The dining area consisted of an indoor and outdoor area. We enjoyed both during our stay. I can only comment on breakfast however as we did not dine in the hotel for any other meal. Breakfast (again included in the per night price) consisted of coffee/tea/juice, a buffet that had yogurt, cereals, meats/cheeses, as well as a menu through which you can order eggs, omelets etc. When dining outside, you are on a fairly busy street, but set back far enough so that the traffic (pedestrian and auto) didn't bother us. There are a number of tables with umbrellas and those have built in heaters for extra warmth when it's chilly. Overall, we found the service a bit hit and miss, but with easy access to the buffet, we were not overly bothered by it.

Other Intangibles - I am gluten free vegetarian and I was impressed that the hotel was able to accommodate my dietary needs. In the morning I was able to get GF toast, and I also noted that they had veggie sausage available although I did not try it. The staff overall were friendly and helpful when approached. The only downside to the hotel is that it was without A/C. This wasn't a problem for us when we were there as the temps were cool and we were able to sleep with the windows open. During a heat wave, I imagine this would be an issue, although our room was also equipped with a good size oscillating fan.

Summary - We would absolutely stay here again and thoroughly recommend this to anyone who is interested in an upscale property in Statford-upon-Avon.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back of the hotel are less noisy.

This hotel is in a great location for visiting Shakespeare's homes or walking by the river. All within walking distance. Our room although a little on the small side was clean with old world furniture and the bathroom was very nice.We did a Groupon gourmet special which includes dinner, breakfast and champagne in your room ( we found out by looking at the drinks menu it was £11 a bottle ) so don't expect anything grand. Alcoholic drinks are extra. There are tea and coffee facilities in your room with fresh milk from the fridge plus biscuits. No problem asking for more. We were told that each person has a quota for dinner of £30.00 and you pay the extra, if any, upon checkout. There is not a trouser press or iron in the room and the wardrobe space is minimal. The fridge sits inside the wardrobe so nowhere to hang anything of length without getting it creased. We were in the old section on the top floor, however, there is not a lift so if you have a lot of cases its a bit of a chore. Views from our room were of the river and garden. The full English breakfast was better on the second day than the first..no idea why, maybe a different chef, and the dinner was better on the first day than the second. All depends what you order I guess. The steak dish was wonderful and my husband enjoyed the fish. The portions aren't huge but surprisingly filling and side dishes such as vegetables, potatoes etc are extra, however,we found the £30 to be enough. We found the staff to be the best part...so friendly and welcoming..especially the restaurant team. We had a little hiccup with not receiving any toilet roll for a whole day and night, however, the management were very apologetic and discounted our drinks bill as a result. Can't complain.Overall, we liked this hotel, the staff and the decor and would stay here again if ever that way in the future.

Room Tip: If you can't do stairs do mention it as the old building does not have a lift. Also, if you have...

This is a lovely old property which has been tastefully renovated. It is located opposite the Royal Shakespeare Company and within walking distance of old town Stratford Upon Avon. The facilities are spacious and clean and in good order. The service is good and friendly (except for a blonde woman at reception yesterday afternoon who had obviously had a personal tragedy - I have never seen anyone so miserable, and the half-a-second smile she flashed left me in no doubt that she wasn't interested in being nice to anyone). Breakfast was very good. The bed was comfortable. Wireless is good and free.

Here's the thing. All of this loveliness is perfect for the old dears from Wokingham on their annual pilgrimage to the theatre but it just wasn't what I was looking for. This isn't the hotel's fault, it is mine. I should have researched the hotel better and found something more suited to business. There is something slightly Fowlty Towers about the narrow corridors and creaky stairs.

A tip though - the building is old and the floors are wood and not soundproofed (again- not the hotels fault). The person in the room above me is clearly doing his/her matching band practice clomping back and forth above me. He or she doesn't sleep well either - the clomping went on at four this morning. So ask for an upstairs room if your arthritic knees will permit the stairs so at least you can disturb the neighbors and not the other way around.

In summary - if you are doing the touristy thing to discover Shakespeare's Stratford, then book yourself in here immediately, especially if you are a senior citizen. If you are more hipster then broken hip, then this place probably isn't for you. It's not a business hotel, it is a twee part of a tour that you will write to Cousin Ethel about.

The hotel is in a very accessible location, on the main road beside the river in Stratford and the car park is very secure- at times the staff are quite reluctant to let you out! Which can be extremely frustrating.

The room was a little on the small side yet fairly comfortable, despite there being a huge vomit stain on the carpet at the side of our bed.

I am aware from attempting to check in, with quite possible the most unfriendliest staff that the hotel is generally always busy, but it seemed through our entire stay there were just not enough staff on duty and those that were, were on the whole, pretty inefficient. It took an age to get served at the bar and when we did, one barman appeared to be bored of my 4 drink order and went and served someone else. Breakfast was ok, the usual tired, dried up buffet and the hot breakfast eventually arriving with everything on the plate looking as if it could have done with at least 5 more minutes under the grill.

The hotel were hosting a wedding, the noise levels were unacceptable with many of the guests drinking, smoking and shouting outside just below the rooms until 2am.

On the whole, a bit of a let down, from what was ranked at #1 of the hotels in Stratford, it's slide down the rankings is of no surprise.

We stayed at this hotel for one night at the beginning of September. The breakfast is excellent and more sophisticated than usual. Our room was clean and well-decorated. The hotel is well-located. The staff was very helpful. You can park your car and then walk in the romantic city. The parking is included. This hotel is a little bit more expensive than the other hotels in this area but I think it is worth it. The only negative comment I have is that it was hot in the room. There was no air conditionning but there was a fan.

We had a late high tea before the evening theatre performance. It was just perfect from the service to the food. We had a view of the theatre from out the window and fyi the public restrooms as beautiful.
