“Lovely, friednly boutique hotel in centre of Stratford”
Reviewed 22 June 2012

When we arrived at The Church Street Townhouse we had to find someone to check us in but to be fair it was Sunday lunchtime when we arrived. The person who checked us in was very friendly and helpful. She showed us to our room and helped carry our clobber and very kindly let us store our buggy in a spare bedroom on the ground floor.

We stayed in room 4 which is a 'simple room'. It is positioned at the back of the building over the kitchens which meant it was very hot but we were provided with a large floor standing fan and the option to move up a floor was given but as we had a baby and a lot of stuff we decided to stick with room 4. The other downside was that it was above the back yard where the bins are kept and twice the bottle bin being emptied made us jump ( it's very loud!). We could also hear staff chatting quite clearly. We decided to live with the heat and keep the window closed. Apart from that the room is really spacious and comfortable. The bathroom is located down a little (private) corridor which gave it the feeling more of a suite than just an ensuit bedroom. There are nice little touches in the room - a little selectin of biscuits, a little decanter of port and a mini bottle of fresh milk for tea.

The staff are all really friendly and the the place has a lovely atmosphere. The food was good - the chocolate brownie was excellent! Breakfast was good although I did feel that a little bit of garnish would have finished the eggs benedict off nicely...although it was tasty it looked a bit plain and rushed. My husband really enjoyed his full English.

All in all we really enjoyed our stay at The Church Street Townhouse and would definitely recommend it to friends and family. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the location is great and food is good.

We stayed here for a short honeymoon and absolutely loved it. The rooms are luxurious which is exactly what we were looking for, the whole atmosphere of the hotel, bar and restaurant was very relaxed, cosy and friendly. We were impressed that the entire breakfast menu was included in the room rates, in addition to complimentary shortbread and port in our room! The staff were fantastic, very friendly and we felt very at ease, nothing would be too much trouble for any of them. We also ate in the restaurant a couple of times and the food was fantastic, i would recommend staying here to anyone, we had a brilliant time.

Room Tip: There are only 12 rooms, and from reading reviews they are all lovely. We requested a room with a ba...

My partner and I stayed here last year for 2 nights, our room was luxurious and had all the amenities you could need. A great location and a fantastic building with plenty of character. This is a great botique hotel, we regularly stay in this type of accomodation and although we felt it was a little overpriced we would recommend it. We didn't eat in the restaurant for dinner but the breakfast included with the price of the room was great. Overall the service was unquestionable, room was lovely and we very much enjoyed our visit.

One of the nicest small inns we've visited. 12 rooms, all spacious and beautifully appointed, with nice touches like complimentary port to drink. Breakfast is included, and it is cooked to order and excellent--from smoked salmon eggs Benedict to a full English breakfast that will make you forget any other fry-up you've ever had. A great bar and lounge area, with congenial innkeepers. Best bet if you are visiting Stratford-upon-Avon and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Room Tip: Room 1 is great if you have trouble climbing stairs. Also, be warned that the hotel (like most in S...

This is a very good hotel right in the centre of the old town and five minutes’ walk from the theatre. It has lots of period charm , a great bar and good restaurant -- the breakfasts are particularly good. We were in room 11 at the front. The room was not large - but you would not expect a large bedroom in this type of old building. It was, however, very nice with a large bed and a new bathroom of a very high standard. It also had tea and coffee making facilities, ipod docking radio/ alarm, an iron and a flat screen tv. Everything was very clean throughout the hotel. We had a pre-theatre meal in the restaurant , which was very good, and champagne in the bar with the live piano playing during the 'champagne happy hour' on Friday. One of the best things about the hotel were the staff who were very friendly , efficient , and always smiling. I would highly recommend this hotel , especially to couples -- and Stratford as a whole.

Room Tip: We had a room at the front of the hotel had the bedroom window open as it was very hot outside durin...

Having read all the reviews on Trip Advisor before we booked we weren't disappointed. A fantastic little hotel with great charm and all the little touches you'd hope for! Loved the port in the room, the abundance of champagne in the bar, the live piano playing, awesome breakfast and central location. Perfect for our romantic getaway.

I was recommended to this fine establishment by a friend, I called and talked over my requirements and wanted the best room available. I was truly overwhelmed by room 3, the use of new with old were impeccable and the beams, drapes etc were lavish. I would say it is a place for couples, more than families as they have a great restaurant and fine bar. The bar was great, we just sat enjoying a bottle of Rose Champagne people watching, all the locals were very entertaining and the staff were very helpfull. On the negative.....there wasn't one. I will be back sooner than you think. Thank you to Rachel and the team.....

Room Tip: ROOM 3, perfect to take your partner.

This recently refurbished boutique hotel is housed in a 400 year old listed building in the heart of Stratford upon Avon. Located opposite Shakespeare's school, among the ancient half-timbered buildings the town is famous for and only 2 minute's walk to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. This is THE place for a pre-theatre supper - local pianists play at 5.30pm daily and the atmosphere is great. The 12 funky en-suite bedrooms vary in size, cost and view. Try for a room at the front of the building for the perfect view. Great food is served all day, through till 10pm in this buzzy neighbourhood bistro with Afternoon Tea a particular favorite. Champagne Happy Hour is every Friday at 5pm and the bar is packed with a great, upmarket local crowd. The staff make the place and nothing is too much trouble. ... more   less
