“A wonderful xmas break”
Reviewed 5 November 2012

We had never been to Stratford on Avon or hotel before, so we were very pleasantly surprised with both. The hotel is in a quiet but central part of town and in our opinion one of the nicest parts. The staff were very friendly and helpful during our short stay. My wife maintains the most comfortable bed she has ever slept in, and I'm inclined to agree with her. The decor was lovely, quirky and tasteful. The breakfast was served in the cosy resteraunt , which unfortunately was too busy for us to dine in on the previous night. The hotel is part of the mr & mrs smith group which is always a pleasure to stay in . Hope to return this xmas for more of the same.

My partner and I stayed here from 28th September-1st October 2012 and this is by far the best hotel we've stayed in in the UK. The food, staff, hospitality and of course the room were outstanding. Well worth staying here. In the heart of Stratford Upon-Avon you really can't go wrong with this wonderful hotel. We will be going back!

An independent hotel of great individuality that is marketed under an umbrella as anonymous as "Mr and Mrs Smith" must be owned by someone with a sense of humour. When you see a 'crown' as a recurring motif in the decor and then learn that the last owner of the property was a dentist, the humour becomes apparent. The building is a historic one but it has been refurbished with great flair and not a little quirkiness. Opened in 2009, the hotel combines historic details (such as Doric columns) with flamboyant colours and eclectic furnishings. Our room (No.3) was a picture of half-timbered modernity in which 'en suite' took on a new meaning. The bath was on display on a raised plinth, an ideal arrangement for a modern re-make of 'Shakespeare in love', but definitely quirky. There was, naturally, a well-equipped modern shower room / w.c. with the usual degree of privacy.
Breakfast was chosen from an a la carte menu (but included in the room rate) and was prepared to order. We found the food excellent but be ready for a leisurely pace. The staff were youthful, helpful and enthusiastic. The bar and restaurant were well used by non-residents (there are only 12 rooms) and the whole place had a buzz of energy and vitality. Don't stay here if you consider that a quiet residents' lounge is an essential requirement. If however you want luxury, individuality, good service and a great location, then the Townhouse is for you.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear of the hotel are quieter --- and historic!

The location of the hotel is great, central for all your needs. The staff at the hotel were very good, attentive, friendly and efficient. The décor needs to be updated around the hotel and in the rooms and a carpet clean of the 'purple' carpet in the hallway and on the stairs wouldn't go amiss. We were in room 11 overlooking the street, the room was a nice size, but could do with having a chair and some surface space to place my wife's endless cosmetics etc on. As there was no air con we had to have the window open all the time, not a problem as the noise wasn't too bad. The fresh milk in the fridge, the shortbread and port were a nice touch.
Food at the hotel was good and not too expensive.
If you are spending a couple of nights in Stratford and don't want the corporate type hotel then yes we would recommend this

Perfect for an indulgent weekend - lots of theatre and, somewhat surprisingly, sun!
It's nicely central with fairly handy parking. Great welcome and afternoon tea can segue into champagne happy hour. RSC Theatre is just down the way. Friendly bar for after.
Great breakfast - mix and match as you wish. Eggs Benedict to rebuild energy following a park run in Leamington (go to www.parkrun.org.uk to take part in this weekly running event up and down UK). And so the weekend can roll on. Lots of good food, served in a friendly, efficient and knowledgeable way.
There's lots of public space and wide choice of rooms. All well furnished with big beds. But beware room 8 - it's very small, although the bathroom is good. Make sure you can manage tiny spaces.
Staff universally friendly and helpful. Good decor. Smart yet relaxed. Plenty of atmosphere. À great place to be.

Room Tip: Only choose room 8 if you want to be very intimate!

We stayed at the Church Street Townhouse for 3 nights. On arrival, the room we had been scheduled to stay in was quite warm, as there was no AC. (We found this to be the case with most hotels in the area.) The hotel staff proactively showed us a much cooler room #1 on the ground floor, which we opted to stay in. The room was spacious and quite comfortable. The furniture was super stylish and the bathroom was clean with a black and white tile floor. The bed was comfy and king-sized. It must be noted that room #1 is literally on the other side of the restaurant, which we were made aware of while deciding which room to stay in. People noise can be heard from customers dining and employees using a back entrance in the hallway. Overall, we were unbothered by it, but if you are sensitive to noise you should absolutely not stay in this room. The room also has a back door that leads outside, but at no times did we feel unsafe because of this. The breakfast is included in the room rate and was delicious. In fact, we also had dinner at Church Street's restaurant. The decor is very chic and the vibe is trendy, yet comfortable. The food was fantastic, particularly the pea and mint risotto and the lemon sponge cake! The location of this hotel is absolutely perfect, with all major sights, shops and restaurants within walking distance. The car park was a 5 minute walk from the hotel. We were pretty independent while traveling around Stratford and the Cotswolds, but the staff was always friendly and helpful whenever we needed them. The same is true for the restaurant staff. If you are looking for charming boutiquey accomodations, in a perfect Stratford location that also serves great food, Church Street Townhouse is your place.

This recently refurbished boutique hotel is housed in a 400 year old listed building in the heart of Stratford upon Avon. Located opposite Shakespeare's school, among the ancient half-timbered buildings the town is famous for and only 2 minute's walk to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. This is THE place for a pre-theatre supper - local pianists play at 5.30pm daily and the atmosphere is great. The 12 funky en-suite bedrooms vary in size, cost and view. Try for a room at the front of the building for the perfect view. Great food is served all day, through till 10pm in this buzzy neighbourhood bistro with Afternoon Tea a particular favorite. Champagne Happy Hour is every Friday at 5pm and the bar is packed with a great, upmarket local crowd. The staff make the place and nothing is too much trouble. ... more   less
