This is our second stay at The Church Street Town House having first visited not long after their opening in 2011. Once again we very much enjoyed our stay. The location is brilliant and the ambiance of the hotel very special - intimate and relaxing.

The food in the hotel is very good in general. I would recommend the starter of olives and chutney. The olives are well marinated and the bread tastes freshly made. The main of sea bream and linguine is very tasty but laughable when you see how much linguine is included - especially for £16. If I was to go again I would eat at Number 9 Church Street instead. The food there is of the highest quality and they do a three course pre theatre meal for £17

As per the previous review, the rooms are very good but be careful which room you get. On our first visit we stayed in Room 3 and it was very spacioua, luxurious and quiet. On this stay we were in Room 10 and it was not as spacious or as quiet.

My final point is on maintenance of the hotel. In two years it has lost a little of its sheen - the spot light at the entrance to our room was hanging out of the ceiling and there are bleach stains on the carpets in the main hallway.

So would I stay again? Yes, the hotel has avvery personal, luxurious and intimate feel that I do not think I would get elsewhere in Stratford BUT I do think some attention needs to be paid to make sure the hotel keeps its sheen

My partner surprised me with a night here at short notice.

It was beautiful and the staff were great. The room, furniture and decor was so grand and well thought out. However, our room was over the yard which meant that we could not sleep until midnight when the smokers had left as they were all in the yard and all we could hear (and smell) was them having a fag break from the bar. Also at 7am the bin truck reversed into the yard bringing with it the "warning, this vehicle is reversing" chime into out room.....not the most romantic think to wake up to.

None of that is a fault of the staff but I wish we had been warned, I guess it was first come first serve for the best rooms I suppose. But just check which room youre in if you want a nice chilled quiet night.

Room Tip: Make sure you dont have the room we had if you want a good long nights sleep.

You can't get a much better location than being across the street from the place where Will Shakespeare "crept like a snail, unwillingly to school" (or however that line goes). Walkable to all the big things in Stratford related to Shakespeare--as well as the Royal Shakespeare Company theaters. Our room faced the street, although we were not troubled by noise (and it was fun to watch the tourists posing in front of the almshouses and the school). The staff was attentive and helped with bags and other arrangements. Lovely breakfast in the morning. We had a meal at the hotel on our first night and it was delicious. Ooh, Stratford sweltered in a rare heat wave; the hotel is not air conditioned (a common situation in older buildings in the UK, which is definitely not equipped for hot weather). Nothing to do about it, though--and not a fault of the hotel.

We stayed for 3 nights with a group of friends on a reunion . We all just loved the hotel . Great staff , really helpful and friendly . Natalie deserved a special mention for outstanding customer service . A few of the group had run companies and we all agreed we would hire her !! Rooms were comfortable with greats beds and showers . The décor was interesting and quirky in fact the whole place was a great mix of old and new .
The location is very central but despite that it was surprisingly quiet given the heatwave meant we slept with the windows open .
The bar and restaurant have a great atmosphere . Whilst we did not eat in the hotel the food looked very good and the breakfast was one of the best I have ever had and I am an expert on the full English !!
As one of my friends said ' if I owned a hotel it would be like this ' praise indeed .

Without a doubt this was the best hotel that we stayed in during our recent trip to the UK. We had a fabulous corner room, one window looked directly onto William Shakespeare's school & the other opened onto a lovely street scape. The room was large, comfortable & fully equipped ( including a full size hairdryer which you don't get everywhere !)
The bathroom was beautifully appointed including a full size bath. The Friday night champagne happy hour & entertainment was just fabulous & definitely the highlight of our stay.
The restaurant was superb - we had an excellent pre-theatre dinner on the Saturday night. Breakfast is a must do.
The staff were just terrific & the overall atmosphere was the best that we came across during our 3 weeks in the UK!
A big thank you to everyone at The Church Street Townhouses for providing outstanding service & making us feel so welcome.
Keep up the good work !

we stayed here for a couple of nights and stayed in room 12 and 10 - both gorgeous rooms, room 12 had a lovey deep bath (with candles, book and wine glass holder)! the beds were very comfy and the rooms were a great size.
We decided to take advantage of the 'Friday champagne happy hour' with our pre-theater dinner - we would definitely recommend this. ;-)
The hotel had a great atmosphere, live music both nights we stayed, the bar was quite busy both nights too. Breakfast was delicious, and the staff were very friendly. The car park was about 10mins walk away and was only £4.20 for 24 hours, or its free parking just outside the hotel from 6pm to 8am.
Would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: splash out and go for a luxury room

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
This recently refurbished boutique hotel is housed in a 400 year old listed building in the heart of Stratford upon Avon. Located opposite Shakespeare's school, among the ancient half-timbered buildings the town is famous for and only 2 minute's walk to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. This is THE place for a pre-theatre supper - local pianists play at 5.30pm daily and the atmosphere is great. The 12 funky en-suite bedrooms vary in size, cost and view. Try for a room at the front of the building for the perfect view. Great food is served all day, through till 10pm in this buzzy neighbourhood bistro with Afternoon Tea a particular favorite. Champagne Happy Hour is every Friday at 5pm and the bar is packed with a great, upmarket local crowd. The staff make the place and nothing is too much trouble. ... more   less
