Hallmark Hotel The Welcombe
Reviewed 23 April 2012

A group of 5 of us booked a golf weekend via a tour operator for this hotel to include, 2 rounds, 1 night, dinner, bed and breakfast....£110 each, fanta
stic value when you consider that this place is absolutely top quality and the golf course in great condition for April and although it looks straightforward it has plenty to catch you out !

Firstly the golf course...the club house is quite new, great bar/lounge area and a large, well-stocked pro-shop. Plenty of practice facilities outside including a large driving range. Even though it had been a bit damp the fairways were in great condition and winter rules meant a clean&place. The greens were lightning quick but well tended. There was a half-way house serving tea/coffee/sandwiches/cakes/choc etc..this was open both on the Sunday and the Monday we played. I played much better on the 2nd day when i had more idea of pins , distances etc.. Some great holes, Par70 but all the Par3's are long... 17th teeing off across the lake in a showery squall with the hotel as a backdrop was a great memory !
There is a course marshall who gives some good advice before you tee-off if you havent played this course before.
After our first round we retired to the club house bar for a couple and then drove up the adjacent track (not public so you can have 2 or 3 beers) to the hotel which has a magnificent frontage overlooking gardens, countryside and the 17th tee !

The Hotel is fantastic, from the moment you walk into the hall with the enormous lounge on the left with roaring log fires it is simply one of the best available not just for a golfing weekend but any kind of weekend away as there is an attached Spa which is also one of the best i have come across. Since there were 5 of us we had booked one of the 3-bed apartments at the back of the hotel, these were great, 3 double bedrooms (1 ensuite), bathroom, kitchen, lounge, dining room, all decorated to a high standard and quality fittings, much better than being in a regular hotel room. We went to the Spa and enjoyed a huge range of facilities, but we did have to walk outside to get to the Spa from our room as there is no internal link door/corridor (note to management !) .

After the Spa we had a great meal in the restaurant overlooking the formal garden and the sun setting on the Warwickshire countryside, simply stunning. The food was excellent, many choices and bearing in mind this was part of our deal the quaity was fanastic for a Table d'Hote menu. The beef simply crumbled into a tasty gravy... Good wine list, the £22 Cotes du Rhone was very good.
Replete with full bellies we retired to the lounge and the squashy sofas in front of the log fire, great end to the day.

The following day after a huge breakfast, you name it, it was available, we checked out and drove down the lane to the club and were able to get off quickly from the first and had a good round in good weather. Had a quick lunch in the clubhouse before we left, cup of tea was £2 (!), and a very average (dry) ham sandwich was £5.50...the only negative of the entire weekend really, but not enough to ruin it one bit.

We are already looking forwward to coming back, we are a geographically-dispersed family so this location in the middle of the country is ideal, real hidden gem if ever there was one !

Room Tip: Ask for one of the apartments.

From driving up the winding drive you know you are in for something special at this hotel ... managed to park right outside reception, checkin was quick and easy, and then we were shown to our suite. Honestly it was one of those jaw dropping moments - we weren't expecting anything like it at all - a massive 4 poster bed, stunning views over the gardens, massive bathroom, massive tv ... service at the hotel was impeccable ... dinner beautiful in the restaurant ... breakfast the following morning was just what we needed.

AND ... I haven't even mentioned the spa area - it's amazing. The crystal steam room was our favourite, and the outdoor heated pool was great too.

I cannot fault anything about this hotel - book it now!

Location wise it is not far outside of Stratford Upon Avon at all ... if you wanted to walk it you could, or a taxi would just be a few minutes and less than a tenner.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, upgrade to a suite - but even the standard rooms are lovely ... if you can gua...

"Watch out for the squirrels!" is the first sign you are entering somewhere that cares. Menzies Hotel is very grand and the long drive is an indication you are for a few treats. The 'welcome' is helpful and informative so you enjoy all the facilities on offer.
The food was not that special. but the main lounge with it's big old fireplace and comfy armchairs most certainly is memorable. The grounds, even in March are beautiful and very peaceful. The golf course looks to be popular though I can't comment first hand.
The spa and the pool are very nice and should be enjoyed if you have the time.
The town centre of Stratford-Upon-Avon is also very close by, so easy to get too.

Booked this venue as a weekend getaway for me and my girlfriend. The deal we got was fantastic (it pays to shop around) but we got 3 nights with one dinner in the restaurant included for an excellent price.

The double room was luxurious, spacious and comfortable, with beautiful decor. The rest of the hotel was stunning, wonderful grounds and a nice area to go for a stroll during a lovely spring day.

The Spa was fantastic with a plethora of facilities available, my personal highlight being the infinity outdoor pool, and from my partner her spa treatments were excellent.

Overall a thoroughly wonderful weekend away, and all for a fantastic price. A true gem of a place to stay in a lovely part of the world.

I booked this hotel last minute, the morning of our trip to Stratford-Upon-Avon, having researched for hours on the internet. Despite using numerous websites, I ended up ringing the hotel and booking with them for the same price I found online! Recpetionist on the phone was very polite and helpful.

The drive up to the hotel is beautiful and the hotel itself is stunning!

Service when checking in was excellent and every member of staff we passed spoke to us and smiled and were very welcoming! We booked a standard double and it was exactly that; clean comfortable and cozy! My only criticism, and it is only a small one, is that the bathroom was fairly basic. The shower sprayed everywhere and there was no bathmat, a bit worrying when my pregnant wife was showering. However, I didn't highlight this and I am convinced that these matters would have been dealt with if I had asked!

Spa and swimming pool were excellent. Staff were friendly and helpful. Swimming in the outdoor mini-pool in the rain was brilliant! Changing facilities were immaculate!

Our highlight, by an absolute mile, was the food! The restaurant is perfectly located and in a beautiful room. We were led to a lovely table for two right in the main window looking out over the gardens and golf course. There was a set menu which worked out at £30 per head for a three course meal (included in our deal). The food was simply amazing and service was exceptional!

Slept really well on a comfortable bed and the use of the iMac Computer for wi-fi internet and TV was great.

Breakfast in the restaurant continued on from dinner the night before. Excellent service and lovely food! I didn't need lunch and only just managed some tea when returning home!

I could have quite easily stayed another night in this hotel and would loved to have seen the menu for tonight's Dinner in the restaurant! I would thoroughly recommend the Dinner, Bed and Breakfast package, at £150, with the quality of the leisure facilities, service and food this was worth every penny!

Will definitely be visiting again and I will be bringing my golf clubs next time!

Room Tip: On return I probably would pay a bit extra for a superior room, just to compare them!

This hotel is located in open country, next to a golf course, but within easy reach of Stratford (8 mins by car). We initially chose it since our son wanted a hotel with a fitness room. Parking and check-in was very easy. We had room 133 (Caroline's room) which definitely delivered the "wow" factor. We have never had such spacious rooms, even bigger than the French Chateaux we have stayed in. There was a very large bedroom with 19th style furnishings, a small side room/office with a Mac computer, an entrance hall and a very large bathroom. The bathroom alone was as big as some single rooms I have stayed in. There was also a good sized flat screen TV, coffee machine and tea making facilities. There wasn't a safe or mini-bar though. The view from the enormous windows was spectacular, despite the poor weather. The general service in the hotel was excellent, very friendly and efficient. My parents were also staying in the hotel, in room 14 which is a disabled room. This room was nothing like ours, so I feel that it does make a big difference which room you get when staying here. We had dinner in the restaurant. This was pretty good, again with good service. The bar area is also nice although the Doom Bar beer ran out, which was a bit of a shame. There is also a nice lounge area with an open fire where you can have a drink or eat something small. Breakfast was in the same restaurant where we had dinner. It's best to get in early for breakfast since it can get a bit cramped - the buffet was located in a narrow area in front of the entrance where waiters, arriving guests and food fetching guests had to cross each other. The quality, quantity and variety of the breakfast was very good though, being traditional English. The fitness room had a good range of Technogym equipment although some basic pieces were missing e.g. a bench for bench presses etc. There was a pool area, but we did not try this out. All in all, a great experience, and if you are a golfer (which I'm not), a must!

Room Tip: The best rooms look out onto the golf course and formal garden
