“Wrong time of the year?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 January 2014

My wife and I spent three nights at the Welcombe between Christmas and the New Year. I was intending to add a review earlier but then decided against since it was going to be almost entirely negative and that seemed a pity since this is clearly a well liked hotel. However, having just read through the glowing recommendations of recent visitors I thought I'd add a warning.

Do not visit between Christmas and the New Year!

Not sure where to start? Cold breakfasts? Repetitive cold dinners? Cleaner barging into the room at 8.30 am? Bar staff incapable of pouring a proper pint (at £4.50 a time)? Disinterested barstaff incapable of changing a barrel in three days? A waitress dropping clean cutlery onto the floor and just tossing it into the knife drawer? A restaurant manager (was he really?) not knowing what is on the menu? A receptionist who could not communicate in English? A doorman totally devoid of personality? Lack of staff to welcome diners into the restaurant? A maintenance man unwilling to accept the fact that two light bulbs were not working and in need of replacement (they needed replacing and not 'checking'). Staff wandering back and forth past a large dirty table in front the fire leaving it untouched for an age, seemingly in a 'not my job' frame of mind. With a couple of notable exceptions, the staff at this hotel (at this time of the year) were rank amateur.

Judging by the reviews of others, I've no doubt that many people reading this who have stayed at the hotel will not recognise it as the same place.

I am left to assume, therefore, that during the period between Christmas and the New Year (Twixmas?) we were being looked after by the 'B'Team in all areas. Unless I am mistaken, a time to avoid

This was our second stay at Menzies for my boyfriends birthday. We dealt with Miriam the reception manager on this occasion. Exceeding customer expectations I believe is 'lived and breathed' throughout the hotel but especially with Miriam. Being warm, welcoming and assuring, Miriam plus the rest of the hotel team made our second stay at Menzies a 'magical' one. The hotel oozes class and high standard, the staff make your dreams a reality and the surroundings...well...are just WOW! We stayed in room 133 on this visit, the room boasts a 4 poster bed with plenty of space including a couch and large screen TV, a separate room with a MAC PC, a 2 person bathroom and view looking out on to the garden and golf course. There is a Spa attached to the hotel which is just lovely, there are several therapeutic rooms with a Jacuzzi and Pool too. The restaurant food was delicious and the service, once again, just fantastic. Do not pass on the opportunity to stay at this hotel we will definitely be going again. A special thanks to Miriam, Michael and the rest of the Menzies Team, we loved the 5* Service and look forward to seeing you all again. Miss Tailor & Mr Popat

Room Tip: Room 133 or the Countess Suite :)

Booked to stay for one Saturday night. Checked in and went off to our room, opened door to room to find a very large room, four poster bed, separate room computer room, settee, massive tv and a large bathroom with his/hers sinks, large bath and walk in shower. Had a fantastic view over the gorgeous looking gardens. Presume not all rooms are like this one, but my review based on our stay. Friendly staff, drinks not cheap at bar, but to be expected.

The wife went for a massage in the spa during the day while I watched sport, result! Got a taxi into town on the night, cost around £5.00, wouldn't fancy the walk, probably looking at 45 mins walk. Went for a very good greek meal on the night, see separate review.

Ordered breakfast in bed in the morning, but when looked outside our room in the morning our card hadn't been taken. Rang down and they apologised, had to wait an extra 20 mins for breakfast, but didn't mind, this was our only minor gripe.

If you do go to Stratford I'd highly recommend you go to El Greco for a meal, couldn't fault it.

Would go back and quite possibly might do this summer.

My husband and I decided to book a weekend end break after christmas. Upgraded from basic room which meant that the room we had was a beautiful one in the old house. Lovely up to date bathroom and amenities and very quiet.
Spa was wonderful, Jacuzzi inside and out, pool and sauna. We didn't use the pay extra spa facilities, such as facials etc as the facilities included in the price were plenty.
Only word of warning. If you wish to order food from the spa restaurant beware! All of the food is prepared in the main hotel kitchens and walked over to the spa. We weren't aware of this and ordered a BLT and a warm teacake at 11.30am, waited until 12.30pm for the food to arrive which was stone cold and were then informed that the main kitchen did not open until 12pm so the order wouldn't have even been started until then. The spa initially informed us that if the food was cold they would take it back and reheat it! My husband was told that as he had eaten half of his original teacake already, the chef may not allow him to replace it! In the end we received new orders, but they still took another 25 minutes to arrive. So top tip only order in the spa if you have enough time to sit and wait!
Shame as everything else was excellent.

Room Tip: it is only £20 exra per room, per upgrade!

We have stayed here every New Year for the past three years. It is a nice hotel with old world touches and pleasant staff. The leisure facilities are good with a reasonably sized pool and spa facilities, set in manicured grounds. The rooms can be a bit hit and miss but are generally OK.

This hotel is in a beautiful setting and the spa is lovely and was reasonably quiet when we visited. However we weren't made to feel welcome here. Dining was expensive and the attitude from some staff towards us spoiled our experience which we had paid a lot of money for.

Stayed for one night on a spa break with a couple of old school friends. We had a lovely time - the spa was wonderful. Robes and towels provided and lockers, so we took full advantage and used most of the facilities including, sauna, jacuzzi(inside and out!)steam room, facials, body exfoliation and manicure and pedicure (some of these we paid extra for). The hotel itself was originally built in 1866, and set in it's own grounds of about 157 acres. It is beautifully furnished and the oak panelling is amazing. The owners have maintained the character of this large country property, and as it is situated only a few miles out of Stratford, is ideal for visiting Shakespeare country. It seems to be very popular for corporate days and conferences as there were several going on when we were there, but they were not intrusive in any way, although the car park does get full. If this is the case, I suggest you go in the separate entrance for the Spa and Golf Club (I had to do this) where there is another car park, which is only a short walk to the Spa and the hotel itself. I then moved my car at the end of the day when spaces in the hotel car park were available. We shared a room which was spacious with a modern, refurbed bathroom that had bath and separate shower. My only minor disappointment was that whilst the bathroom looked as though it has recently been refurbished, the wash basin had not. It was inset in marble and I felt it was grubby up around under the rim where the basin joins the marble, and in the overflow. As there were three of us sharing the room, I was also disappointed to see only a Z bed for the third bed rather than a proper full size bed - ok if you were a child but nor for an adult and this is supposed to be a 4 star hotel after all. It was very quiet at night so we all slept well (room 112 overlooking the car park). Dinner was very good but not exceptional - we ate off the table d'hote menu as part of the package. The breakfast was buffet style with a wide range of fruits, cereals, cheeses ets and plenty of choice of cooked food too if you wanted the full English - unlike the previous review we found the cooked food was hot enough - perhaps they have turned up the warmers! The dining room overlooked the formal gardens which I would imagine look beautiful in spring and summer but not much happening in winter time. Service was excellent and I would stay here again.
