This two night stay was our Christmas treat to each other and to celebrate my birthday. Having told the hotel that, and as a total surprise, we were upgraded to the largest and most beautiful room I have ever stayed in, with high ceilings, its own chandelier, amazing and truly comfortable four poster bed, equipped with a large TV, computer, beautiful furniture and decor and a stunning outside view. The roll top bath in our large bathroom was a real treat. We received excellent service from staff who couldn't do enough to help and ensure our trip was special for us. We visited the spa and had a 'couples massage' with champagne and chocolates to follow. One evening meal was included in our price and it was delicious. This was such a lovely weekend, a wonderful spa break with a real feel of romance. Will definitely go there again and can recommend.

Room Tip: If you have a special occasion - tell the hotel when you book. This was the first time we have visit...

I visited here with two friends for a birthday treat. The hotel itself is a beautiful Victorian simulation of a Jacobean house. There were truly roaring fires, plenty of comfortable seating areas, and gorgeous views over a knot garden. Our room was spacious and well-furnished, equipped with Apple accessories and the bathroom had a bath with shower over as well as a walk-in shower. Our visit to the spa was good, though there were not enough loungers for the number of guests and the atrium area, while lovely and light, was quite chilly. Our evening meal in the hotel was delicious and staff were friendly and helpful. The only negative, which prompted the four rather than five star review was that the service at breakfast seemed chaotic. Out hot drinks took an age to arrive and came in cribs and drabs, other tables suffered the same fate. We did not have condiments on our table and had to ask for them we were served another table's hot drinks twice. It was so surprising after the rest of our experience had been so positive. Great hotel for spa break, just shape up the breakfast service, please!

Room Tip: We had a room in the old part of the hotel but it overlooked the car park.ask for a room overlooking...

Room 201 - I stayed on Friday & Saturday night and booked through Expedia for an incredibly low price. The check-in went smoothly and we were upgraded to an executive room. The room was of a good size, the imac tv/computer was an excellent idea, the beds were very comfy and the bathroom was quite large. The only down side was the lack of power in the shower but you can't have everything. Our inclusive 3 course dinner was delicious and the wines were reasonably priced. The breakfast had a lot of choice and to a high quality. The staff were okay, they were generally helpful however some staff lacked skills in English and so a few conversations were lost in translation. The spa was lovely and very well proportioned and set out. Also the house and grounds were beautiful and I shall definitely come back if I can find such a good deal again.

We have left the hotel today. We booked on a discount website a 2 night break including breakfast and dinner on one night. We arrived friday and although busy easily found a car paking space. For the booking price we expected a standard room, however we were totally thrilled to find we had been placed in a suite. The facilities the room offered were brilliant a tv /pc in the sitting room and a further tv in the bedroom. The bathroom was huge with white and company toiletries. There was an ipod dockig station, local papers and water. The staff we all incredibly attentive and very focussed on delivering top end service. I still cannot quite believe how lucky we were with the room and we are grateful to have been given room 202. The spa has excellent facilities and is incredibly clean, again with very helpful and friendly staff. The house is a lovely country house hotel with modern spa . I notice noone ever mentions the tempurature of the hotel, which probably means noone found it extreme, amazingly they keep an even climate throughout the building which isn't easy in a building of it's size and age. Food was fantastice and a great selection of wines. We will definately return!! Thankyou for a memorable weekend.

We had a 2 night break here with breakfast, plus dinner included on one night at a very reasonable rate. The hotel is up a long driveway just outside Stratford, first impressions are good although the car park is too small and we struggled to find a spot. On entering the hotel Reception staff were warm and welcoming. Walking through the common areas to our room we were impressed by the wood paneling, lovely lounges and the way the hotel had retained its character. This diminished however as we approached the wing our room was in! Down a dingy corridor and even more dingy stairs, past the laundry room into a very basic bedroom with lack-lustre bathroom. On the plus side it was lovely and quiet and we figured we were in the bargain basement as we had paid a bargain basement price. The view from the room was of the delivery bay. It seems all the standard rooms are in this wing but some do have a better view.
We could cycle in to the town in 10 or 15 minutes, probably 45 minutes plus to walk ,there is a riverside route from just down the road but this was flooded when we were there.
We visited the spa complex on three occasions, staff were very friendly and the area was clean and well maintained, the pool is a decent size and the sauna, steam room, vitality pool etc add to the experience. Excellent. Be aware you have to go outside the hotel building to get to the spa.
Breakfast was plentiful, good choice of fruits and cereals, full cooked breakfast also available from hotplates but with fried eggs the only eggs on offer, on the Saturday morning they struggled to cope with the rush, hotplates were left empty, people were queuing and waiting for the hotplates to be refilled, a bit of a shambles which did not reflect the rest of our stay.
We had a sandwich lunch in the attractive lounge bar with lovely views over the garden one day, prices seemed very high (£6 or £7 for a sandwich)but so was the quality, what we thought was going to be a totally overpriced sandwich turned out to be good value ,excellent bread, absolutely loaded with fillings and side salad and crisps on the side. Our included dinner was from a table d'hote menu(£35) but with a decent range of choices through the three courses. A really good meal, felt quite special as service was good. In fact the service was excellent from everyone we encountered throughout our stay, everyone was friendly, professional and eager to please.

My wife and I spent three nights at the Welcombe between Christmas and the New Year. I was intending to add a review earlier but then decided against since it was going to be almost entirely negative and that seemed a pity since this is clearly a well liked hotel. However, having just read through the glowing recommendations of recent visitors I thought I'd add a warning.

Do not visit between Christmas and the New Year!

Not sure where to start? Cold breakfasts? Repetitive cold dinners? Cleaner barging into the room at 8.30 am? Bar staff incapable of pouring a proper pint (at £4.50 a time)? Disinterested barstaff incapable of changing a barrel in three days? A waitress dropping clean cutlery onto the floor and just tossing it into the knife drawer? A restaurant manager (was he really?) not knowing what is on the menu? A receptionist who could not communicate in English? A doorman totally devoid of personality? Lack of staff to welcome diners into the restaurant? A maintenance man unwilling to accept the fact that two light bulbs were not working and in need of replacement (they needed replacing and not 'checking'). Staff wandering back and forth past a large dirty table in front the fire leaving it untouched for an age, seemingly in a 'not my job' frame of mind. With a couple of notable exceptions, the staff at this hotel (at this time of the year) were rank amateur.

Judging by the reviews of others, I've no doubt that many people reading this who have stayed at the hotel will not recognise it as the same place.

I am left to assume, therefore, that during the period between Christmas and the New Year (Twixmas?) we were being looked after by the 'B'Team in all areas. Unless I am mistaken, a time to avoid
