“Dont go here!!! or least not in the week”
Reviewed 12 April 2011

Ok Location very central for Stratford Upon Avon High Street and the Theatre but and hotel clearly needs some refurbishment, and revaluation of grading! some of chairs in bar were worn, bath had big chip in, grouting going discoloured, bed most uncomfortable ever slept in, also I got make up on pillow first night yet didnt change bedding once in the 4 nights were were there, hair on bathroom floor wasnt swept properly. Then the food!!! well since when has slow roasted pork belly just been a lump of skin and fat, it looked more like it had been microwaved!! The rib eye steak had no flavour either and rather on the small side! we weren't only ones to complain on the one evening we ate there 2 other tables walked out not sure why on one but other table their fish was warn but mash/veg stone cold, other dish was swimming in fat. Although waiters and waitresses were very friendly and helpful they were clearly under staffed as service was really slow. However we stayed Monday to Friday, and the difference on Friday morning when they obviously got more staff in for the weekend was that rather than waiting ages for the cooked breakfast they were trying to put it on your table whist still eating bits from the buffet. I certainly would not grade this as 4 star.

This great hotel is ideally placed for a visit to Stratford and the RSC Theatre. Situated close to the river and spacious green area in front of the theatre it's a short, pleasant walk into the historic town centre and Shakespeare's birthplace. Plenty of retail opportunity too. The hotel is atmospheric with a great bar; the breakfast wonderful, with plenty of healthy and delicious food to choose from. We found the hotel staff extremely friendly and welcoming - nothing was too much trouble and we felt very special. The grounds are mature and well looked-after. All-in-all we had a great break and intend to return during the summer for a visit to the newly-renovated RSC theatre. Highly recommended!

On arrival, we were blown away by the beautiful frontage of the hotel - It truly fitted what we imagined Stratford to represent; class, old-fashioned style and elegance. On entering, the theme continued - lots of wooden paneling, leaded windows, and bars with baronial-sized fireplaces. The staff were friendly and professional, and although there was a glitch with the booking through Alpharooms, the young man at reception quickly booked us in to a double room as we had requested. Unfortunately, I had not taken the advice proffered by another reviewer and was content to take whichever room they offered us, which was in the newer build part of the hotel, at the back.

The room itself, whilst perfectly adequate, wasn't really in keeping with the main part of the hotel, being rather bland in nature. It was adequately equipped with an adequate bathroom, and adequate combination double bed and an uninspiring view of the leisure centre wall. Perhaps we're being unfair here, as we hadn't asked for a room in the main building - maybe the prices are higher - and we were treated just as well as any other guest. It's just something to be aware of, that there are 2 architectural sides to this hotel.

That said, the service throughout the hotel was never less than excellent, the breakfasts were ample (including free-range eggs) and despite a large wedding party being present, the waiting was always prompt. We had a lovely weekend here and would happily come again - but ask for a different room!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main house

Stayed for 2 nights Great Hotel although a long walk to our room (No 121). Facilities and room excellent as was breakfast. Only complaint would be bar service was very slow (only 1 person!) although on our next night we wet to the bar across the road at their sister hotel the swan and their bar was quick and buzzing. We got a good price B&B £98 per night, king size bed was only 2 single beds pushed together with large duvet so could have been better.

As a teenager, I used to drink in the Manor Bar, in those days filled with friendly smoke and a lot less expensive than it is now. It was then a Forte Hotel, and the huge wings of bedrooms at the rear had not been built.

I've been back to stay a couple of times since, but this time, we returned to attend a wedding in the hotel. The lovely approach to the Elizabethan manor house is still there, and it looks stunning; the vast bedroom wings and the even newer leisure centre are hidden behind. The reception staff were friendly and efficient, helping my wheelchair-bound wife with ramps - an adapted four-hundred year old house on many different levels is not ideal for wheelchairs, but the staff were always helpful and seemed well versed in this activity.

Our bedroom was standard 4-star quality, though no bigger than that in a modern 2-star Premier Inn. The view was of cars and another wing. But while we had some niggles, the overall experience was good. Catering for the wedding was fine, and the breakfast in the dining room served efficiently, even though the room was full and we had to queue. While there is a buffet, the cooked breakfast course was freshly prepared and they had wonderful black pudding from Stornaway - the best.

It's about seven minutes walk across the old river bridge to the town centre which can be mobbed with tourists, especially Americans who've never read a word of Shakespeare. This seven minutes ensures that the hotel is well away from the hustle and bustle, and when I next return to Stratford, I would choose to stay again at Alveston Manor.

Got a really good deal on this hotel so stayed for three nights with dinner, bed and breakfast. Our room was 69, up a very steep staircase and in the roof over what used to be a stable block, I believe. Very quaint with low breams (not a problem for us as we're really short). We had bathrobes, slippers and refrigerator, so we felt quite pampered. Breakfast good, dinner two courses for £15.95 included in our deal. There are some service issues/management training needed in the restaurant but overall we had a fab time and thoroughly enjoyed the hotel and swimming pool. The bar area was really cold when we were there and deserted. We didn't stay there long, too cold! Anyway, the hotel is in a great location for Stratford, Warwick and Leaminton Spa. Great time had by all.

Having stayed at numerous hotels throughout the world over the last few years, i thought the Copthorne in Christchurch New Zealand was an hotel our hotels could take a lesson from. Here we found somebody somewhere was taking tourism in this country seriously. Apart from the location being absolutley superb, whether visiting the wonderfully renovated RST to meandering around the town or along the riverbank, the character of the building, the beautifully tended grounds and secure parking, the excellant swimming pool and gym, the good standard of food served i might add at all the Macdonald hotels we have visited, what makes this place so special are the staff. From the concierge who fills in the gaps in your knowledge, to the severly tried by some guests ever patient and pleasant waiting staff to the excellant staff at reception who made you feel welcome and even when departing sounded interested in your plans for the day. Would return tomorrow they are a credit to the Madonald chain.
