Macdonald Alveston Manor Hotel

Stayed here for 1 night, and had a very pleasant time.

The old part of the building is pretty, proving a period setting for the reception and lounge/bar. It also hides a sprawling hotel building build cica 1980 where your room is located. The decor is quite neutral and "period" - it feels like a chain hotel (which is what it is) but with some more high-class touches.

The room was large and well appointed - the bed was very comfy. The bathroom could have been a bit cleaner but was generally good.

The health club has a huge pool, steam room and sauna, and a gym. All very clean and useable (The gym is quite small but well equipped).

Breakfast was very good - large buffet for cereals and fruit, well cooked bacon and eggs, attentive staff, nice cosy atmosphere.

Check-in / Check-out were fine, though their booking confirmation said the room was pre-paid but it turned out not to be (I've had billing problems with this chain before).

Plenty of parking, excellent central location. Would stay here again (if the price is right).

The old part of the hotel is very nice and full of character, and from some of the reviews below it sounds like rooms in this part are nice. However I stayed in one of the modern extensions (the hotel is surprisingly large when you take these into account) which was really not that great.

Good: reception staff were helpful, breakfast was good, nice TV in room, the old part of the hotel is very nice, free mineral water (still and sparkling) in room.

Lows: the rooms in the newer parts of the hotel were very average, a little shabby and overlooked by other rooms/carparks. I felt I needed to keep the curtains shut when in the room.

The Alveston Manor building (old part- reception etc) is very impressive and the grounds are beautiful. The standard rooms in the new wing are slightly indentikit but in my opinion far superior to many "conference/wedding" type hotels of this category, very well appointed and comfortable. The service was also excellent- overall this hotel represents excellent value in its category and i would not hesitate to recommend it.
The location is very central and convenient for the RSC and town centre.

Good: Comfortable old room, friendly staff, helpful staff, excellent gym & pool, nice breakfast, good location in the town.
Bad: Wireless signal in room inadequate, had to go to bar for emails, Bar staff's English was so bad they got all drinks orders wrong; poor air conditioning in gym. Double room not big enough for 2 people (in old part of hotel)

Overall, good enough but some improvements would help.

Have stayed here twice, once in the old part of the building and once in the new. The room in the old building was spacious and had character; the room in the new block was modern but we could have been in any hotel chain in any town or city. It was uninspiring and lacked atmosphere.
The staff are attentive and fairly efficient but really need to sort out the breakfast arrangements. They are fine when they take your order at the table and serve you per table, but when they have a buffet breakfast , which seems to happen at weekends , then the service is dreadful. Queues formed because the trays of food were not replenished when the food ran out and many of us ended up eating cold beans and coagulated bacon without the sausage and eggs! The service in the dining room at dinner time could also be more efficient. We booked for pre theatre dinner and were very pushed for time to reach the theatre before the curtain went up.
All in all, it's a convenient hotel and the food is adequate but don't expect first class service.

Just returned from a two night stay at this hotel. It is from the front a great looking characterful hotel. However, this is misleading. Once you are inside and allocated a room in the "new building" which are all Classic Zip rooms - ie king size bed with no character, this is where you feel let down.

The hotel only has executive rooms in the main building which were all full. So, we made a 5 minute trek to the end of the new block to our room (up and down stairs and through various characterless corridors).

The main advantage to being so far away from the hotel was the peace and quiet - no-one was going to walk past our room at night to disturb us as we were as far away as you can be !

The rooms reminded us of conference hotel rooms - very dull and boring and very average.

However, the staff were all friendly and helpful - we couldn't fault that.

The bed was good but be aware, the pillows are awful ! One is hard and lumpy and the other is feather but hard and lumpy! We asked for different pillows for the 2nd night but they weren't much better.

The breakfast was lovely with fresh orange juice and the meal was cooked rather than buffet style. Try to get this included in the price as it is extortionate at £17.50 per head otherwise !

The coffee in the bar was also extortionate at £7.75 for a cafetiere for two people !

We did try to book for 3 nights as the hotel website is showing a deal of 3 nights for the price of 2. Don't be misled by this. We paid £134 per room per night. One would assume therefore that 3 nights could be bought for £268. WRONG! 3 nights is based at £126 per night x 3 which comes up at £378!! I have emailed the Macondald group about this as surely this is misleading under the trades description act !!

All in all, a hotel in a good location (5 minutes walk away from the town) and nice breakfast but characterless rooms.

Oh, we also saw a Midsummer Nights Dream which was amazing - great comedy - Shakespeare with a modern twist. Had the girl in it from two pints of lager and a packet of crisps who plays Louise - Kathryn Drysdale - she was amazing - book tickets and you won't be disappointed.

Try to get the ones with restricted pillar view as it is only thin and they cost you £14 !

We stayed at the the Alveston Manor for one night during Shakespeares Birthday weekend. I heard the concierge tell someone that they were packed, but we didn't have to wait to check in or out and the place did not feel too busy.
We had trouble with our room 'key' and had to get help. We were told that the locks are all being changed this week as they have had problems. The staff were all friendly and helpful.
The room was spacious and nicely decorated with a huge, comfy bed. Our room was at the back of the hotel overlooking well kept gardens, and was very peaceful. Only the plumbing was a little noisy at times!
We didn't have breakfast as my husband was running a marathon that morning, but the restaurant looked lovely, very atmospheric as it is in the old part of the building. I'd certainly try it if we stay there again.
There is no getting away from the fact that this hotel is pricey. Room service was expensive anyway, but then there is a £5 per person tray charge! Needless to say we weren't tempted.
Having said that, we enjoyed our stay, and would go back for a treat.
One last thing, there is a lot of building work going on around the river and theatre area right now, and it doesn't look at its best. If this would be your first trip to Stratford, it may be better to wait until autumn when all it is all finished.
