“A lovely surprise weekend”
Reviewed 1 September 2014

Lovely building with very comfortable rooms and excellent service. The building is a Tudor manor hose and so a few cracks in the plaster are to be expected. We booked a package which included breakfast in bed. The breakfast was delivered promptly with a call five mins before to let us know to expect it. I can not fault the hotel.

Room Tip: Room two is wonderful.

The hotel consists of an original Tudor style main entrance with a large modern extension to the rear. It is very convenient to Stratford city centre with a short 5 minute walk over the bridge crossing the River Avon and the moored house boats.

The Alveston is very comfortable with excellent customer oriented staff. The breakfast is simply outstanding. One evening we arranged for a really long overdue family reunion. We met with the chef and he customized a menu for us. We also had a private room. It was a perfect evening with very good food.

There is ample parking front and rear. The hotel charges Pound 5 for the duration of the stay and gives you a parking permit. The manager explained to us they charge the flat rate to deter locals from parking in guests spaces. Having paid for 3 nights we thought it was reasonable. We paid 10 a night in Bath!!

We draw your attention to the fact that the Alveston does not have a lift/elevator. Keep this in mind when booking. The back of the hotel can be a real be real traipse.

This is our second stay and I'm looking forward to the third. Could we nit pick...sure. But overall a very good stay and great for sight seeing.

Room Tip: There is no lift/elevator. The back of the hotel is really quiet but a good walk.

My wife and I stayed at the Macdonald Alveston on a hotel/dinner deal. The hotel itself has seen better days and really could do with a deep clean. We were somewhat surprised to discover that the hotel charges guests to use its own car park - £5 for 24 hours, which is a ridiculous thing to do. The cleanliness of the hotel was ok, although we too got something of a 'dog' odour during our stay!

The meal was frustratingly hit and miss. The staff certainly tried their best but everyone in the vicinity of our table had something to complain about. For our part, bread we ordered never arrived (but appeared on our bill), water was only ever given on a small glass by glass basis, the meal took an unacceptably long time to arrive (everyone was suffering from this despite the restaurant being barely half full) and on one plate the potatoes were raw. Yet the scallops were delicious and very well cooked as were other parts of the meal. We ended up with the impression that with much better management it could actually be the high dining experience it clearly thinks it is (lots of white gloves!) At the moment though it is a long, long way away. Breakfast was exactly the same experience, long waits, not what we ordered but what we did get was OK.

We would never go back to the Macdonald Alveston and at the price it charges for a hotel/dinner deal you can get a far superior experience elsewhere. As a base for visiting Straford though, it was ok.

2/5 - one point dropped for charging guests to use the car park!

It would not take so much to improve this place a lot. They have decent staff who try their best but they let themselves down in a number of ways. This is supposed to be a spa hotel but my wife could not get a nice clean towel at the spa, they all came back from the laundry not very nice. Really basic and it was a shame because it spoilt the nice effect of her treatment which was well meaning but not tremendously well executed. The corridors all smelt a bit which I presume was from the shabby carpets, and a weird policy of accepting (and charging for) dogs. Maybe ok for a cheap B&B in the back end of beyond but not for what they were charging, and it did add a certain eau de chien to the carpets.

Lovely, well kept grounds (although smaller than we imagined) and well placed car park with sufficient spaces. Fantastic location with the river, theatre and town all a short walk away. The reception staff were friendly and efficient both on check-in and check-out.

We booked a four poster room in the main building as an anniversary treat and it was quaint and old, as expected, with lovely old oak furniture, a separate sitting room and en suite.
No real complaints about the room (the bed was very creaky, but that was understandable in the circumstances) however, it just felt a bit tired and unloved. The sofa and light fittings didn't fit with the Tudor theme and, at £240 for one night's bed and breakfast, I guess we expected more of a 'wow' factor.
However, while we encountered some friendly and efficient staff, we felt that the level wasn't consistent throughout the hotel.
We decided to have dinner in the restaurant but the experience was a little disappointing. On arrival (at 6.50pm) we could see that it was almost empty, but the member of staff who 'greeted' us gave us the impression that we were a nuisance by requesting a table without booking first. She didn't even respond to our request in person but told a waitress a table number and ignored us as we were led to it. Although the room that we were put in was entirely empty, we were seated in the very corner, up against a wall of very tired looking wallpaper with food or drink stains on it. A young man brought us canapés but when I asked what they were he couldn't tell me and had to go back to the kitchen to check. After some time, in which we could't touch the canapés, he came back with a vague and uncertain description. The meal was fine - it wasn't amazing, but it was fine. However, my husband's cheeseboard contained 3 walnuts, 2 of which were inedible. They were black and shrivelled! What self-respecting kitchen would allow that to go out to the customer?
Breakfast the next morning was a similar experience, albeit far busier. We were shown to a table on arrival where our drink and toast orders were taken, but we were given no further indication of the procedure. Some people were eating a cooked breakfast but we didn't know if they had collected it from a hot buffet or ordered it, so we sat awkwardly for some time. It would have been better service for the person who showed us to our table to say "help yourself to cereal/fruit whatever and we'll take your order shortly" (especially as we were in the room that didn't contain the 'cereal/fruit whatever' table) - but we were just left at the table until, eventually, our order was taken.
I had the vegetarian breakfast but would advise other vegetarians to swerve the sausage as it was dry and unpleasant.
The hotel had its good points and nothing about the stay was terrible - if we had paid half the amount the little niggles might have seemed less irritating.
However, we have stayed at Ettington Park Hotel just outside of Stratford on a number of occasions and paid less for a more superior experience with greater levels of excellence in rooms and service.

We booked a spa break at this hotel for a birthday celebration and can quite honestly say haven't stayed in such a warm welcoming place for a long long time, All the staff are very very attentive and will go the extra miile to ensure you have a fab time especially Miles in the bar, Melanie in the restaurant and Oliver in the pool and spa .

The food was top quality both our dinner and breakfast were lovely and tasty.
The hotel is a beautiful, old building set in fantastic grounds only a short walk from Stratford.
