“How to Fleece the Tourist”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2011

Nothing wrong with this hotel - it's clean, well run, ideally situated for Stratford's attractions. But you have to take a ticket to enter its car park and no, the ticket is not validated when you leave - it will cost you an extra £5 for parking. And then when you try to connect to the internet you discover that you can only do this if you purchase a voucher which costs £5 an hour or £15 for 24 hours. I have stayed in lots of Holiday Inns here and in the States and have NEVER been charged for Wi Fi access. It's obviously the creeping Ryanair factor . . they'll be charging for soap next.
I did complain and the general manager has kindly offered me a free 30 minute Wi Fi access voucher for my next stay - obviously there's not a lot I'm going to be able to do with that!

The good things? Location, ease of reservation, extremely cooperative and friendly staff, especially Raj, the concierge from 7 AM through 11 something PM.

The bad? Everything else.

The trade - off in Holiday Inns (I have years of experience, and hundreds of nights with the IC chain - rethinking that, now) is this: clunky architecture, good locations, everything clean and everything works. Here's how it works at this hotel: horrible architecture, good location, nothing at all works, and hasn't for years. Windows, sealed shut. Air conditioning, broken (chronically). Stuffy, overheated rooms with no ventilation possible. Unclean everything, deferred maintenance, insufficient water, hot or otherwise, and lots of complaints listed with management and websites, and no action for years. The spa is closed, "until further notice," as is the pool - but the website still touts both non-existent facilities.

Did I mention the pay internet: Sixteen US Dollars per day for halting, inadequate service. You can have better, for about $24 USD per day. Even McDonald's (In Stratford) has better and free internet service. Clearly, management here is stranded on a desert island, in a time-warp.

Oh, and the multiply stained, tired carpeting, and the scuffed walls.

The other part of the bargain that one expects with a chain of this (prior) caliber - you shouldn't have to examine each individual hotel prior to reserving, there is some sort of overall standard of competency. Not in UK, not with IC hotels, not anymore. Everything in the last two properties I have stayed in is old, broken-down, dirty or nasty, marginally or totally non-functional. And the staff knows it.

The staff, on the other hand, are friendly, competent, and willing. And extremely aware of the many issues of this property. But capital expenditures simply will not be made.

Come on, IC, you have contracts with these people - get rid of them. Meanwhile, my strong suggestion, avoid these hotels. Sure, the location is great. But here's the secret in Stratford: Stratford is tiny, every in-town location is great, most of them just as great as this one. Ditch the chains, if they have abandoned their clients, and give the little guys a chance. We avoid the little guys because of the spotty quality and the information cost. The chains previously solved this issue. Not any more. Not exactly.

Room Tip: go elsewhere. Many hotels are equally convenient

Dear Madam/Sir,

I am so sorry that you feel this way regarding your recent stay at the Holiday Inn Stratford upon Avon, and I would like to apologise profusely for your dissatisfaction whilst staying with us.

Having read your review, I would like to make some comments regarding your observations. We have a high ranking score in the Holiday Inn Guest Questionnaires in terms of overall satisfaction of the visit. This score is currently 86% and in the recent AA inspection we obtained a qualification of a 4 star hotel rating with a merit score of 74%.

Also the recent reviews in TripAdvisor do recommend our property for any future guests and give some very favourable reviews regarding their visit to us.

We indeed experienced some issues with the swimming pool and the jacuzzi since last Sunday, and specialist help has been enlisted in order to rectify the problem. Although all the physical repairs have been done, there is now the matter of bringing the pool water quality and temperature to the acceptable levels within our health and safety regulations. Some alternative arrangements have been made with the local Stratford Leisure Centre, where guests can use their facilities and the entry ticket would be billed back to the Holiday Inn. We foresee the pool to be fully operational either Friday evening 24.06.11 or Saturday morning 25.06.11, chlorine levels and temperature permitting.

We are part of a company which owns the franchise of 14 other IHG hotels, and indeed our policy is to charge for the Wi-Fi access in the hotel. Various grades of access packages differing in cost and speed of access are available. Also, if you don't have a PC or laptop, we have two PC's in our public areas that can be accessed with vouchers purchased at the hotel.

With round the clock availability of the Guest Relations Manager, I am sure that room moves and various other alternatives where presented to you to counter act some of the deficiencies you found in your room. The Guest Relations Managers are there for you to call upon and I hope that you made use of this facility within our hotel.

IHG have yearly inspections, and so does the AA in terms of assessing the quality and cleanliness of their establishments, and I would like to apologise once again if you found the facilities and the services not to be acceptable to you.

I was delighted to read that you found your interaction with our team members to be good and that they displayed a confident, willing and can-do approach. A lot of time is spent on making sure that training is focussed on customer care and I am glad to see that the desired effect of
this training has been obtained.

Once again I would like to take this opportunity to apologise and hopefully we can be of assistance in the future with your hotel needs, whether here in Stratford or in many other locations throughout the UK.

Kind regards,

Miguel Abellan van Kan

We stayed there for a night as we were traveling from Wockingham to the Lake District and North Wales. The dinner was good and reasonably priced with very good service. The free breakfast next morning was equally good. The prepaid internet service on the main floor was extremely unfriendly and clumsy to use; although the front desk staff were very helpful in assisting. A special thank you to the India gentleman working in the restaurant - an extremely efficient and helpful person!!

I stayed here for a conference and can’t really comment on value as I’m not really sure how much it cost. I can say the standard double rooms are excellent (spacious and comfy) and the breakfast must get a mention, not for the food (standard large hotel fare) but for the coffee: they have a proper bean-to-cup latte/cappuccino machine you can use as many times as you like. Brilliant – why don’t more hotels do this rather than forcing you to drink that foul filter stuff that tastes like the dredgings of the mouth of the Humber? To conclude, if you can get a reasonable rate here, it’s a nice place and a great location.

Great location for Stratford and it's historical sights. We were met by extremely helpful and friendly staff. Who offered every bit of information we required and more. Room was comfortable, clean and quiet. Swimming pool and facilitieswere well staffed and clean. Staff very helpful and pleasant. Everything you would want from a hotel. No complaints.

If you are looking for a hotel within easy walking distance of Stratford centre, with a full range of facilities and large airy rooms with well designed bathrooms then this is the place to stay. I was here for a 2 day conference with 120 colleagues and was impressed with the hotels ability to cater for such a large group seemingly effortlessly.
If you are looking for an olde worlde hotel with loads of character do not stay here but, otherwise, it offers all you could want.

We planned a trip to Stratford as I hadn't returned as an adult although my partner has been many times. We booked through Superbreaks as a "mystery hotel" which I would do again as it added to the excitement and we're not fussy people. It cost £50 for both of us Inc breakfast and it gave us the info if the hotel upfront, just not the name.
We went bank holiday Sunday for one night and the hotel is very clean, modern, large. Outside looks nothing but inside very good and the back looks onto River Avon. The weather was dry but there was a nip to the air but in summer would be lovely to sit outside. All children in this hotel were very well behaved and hoping not to insult, you could see that the parents were a little older/stricter/wealthier - awful to say this but true.
We visited the sauna/jacuzzi/steam room and pool which was a very small area however not a queue to use and was a nice relaxing addition to our stay.
On the evening we went into the town (a very short walk) but the restaurants were packed to capacity so definitly prebook!) Their menu's all looked delicious and to give you an idea on pricing, a good cut of steak cost £17-19.
We had no choice but to return to the hotel and use the cavern which was expensive but it did have a lot of choice and everything was delicious! It cost £25 each plus £19 for a bottle of Shiraz so the meal was more than our stay but hey!
There was a salad counter, 3 meats 1 fish and I think 2 veggie choices, lots of vegetables and choices of deserts, coffee included, oh and soup so it could have been a 5 course meal if you could fit it in!
Breakfast was self-serve but fresh and plenty of hot English choices and also cereals/cold meats/fruit.

I would definitly return to this hotel but would I paynits usual (I think) £118 price tag! No, but that's possibly a biased answer as I do live within an hour of Stratford so would be an expensive local trip for me!
