The Stratford, A QHotel
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 2 September 2014

It's refreshing, although, sadly rare, to go somewhere where nothing is too much trouble, where you are greeted with a smile and where there are no crazy surcharges for what most would accept as the norm and included. The Stratford is one such place. Reception staff are genuinely welcoming and you are made to feel like valued guests at all times by all the staff. Breakfast quality is high. Rooms are modern and well equipped. Rates are reasonable. Location is great at the top of the Main Street. Parking is convenient and easy. Very impressed to say the least; left feeling a very satisfied customer.

Room Tip: Go as high as you can. Only 3 floors

We have been staying at The Stratford Q hotel for last five years we have visited Stratfrord and the quality remains of the highest standard. This is the first time we brought our six month old and all the staff couldn't be more helpful and courteous. A cot bed had already been put in our room which was on the ground floor, which was most helpful.

You cannot fault The Stratford Q is you are looking for a modern hotel with all the expected amenities, close to the town centre.

Stayed Tuesday to Friday after August bank holiday weekend with my wife. I assess hotel was about a quarter to half full. Easy to find, good parking and very convenient for train station. Nicely located for visiting all tourist attractions in town. Stayed in a Q room. Whilst I could see it was roomier than a standard room, not sure how it compared to a superior room. It was very clean and modern. Like other reviewers, I found the room dark, and I needed to have all lights on, even during daytime. The ‘lots of lovely toiletries’ did not live up to the hotels claim, being only one very small bottle of bath/shower and similarly shampoo. Just enough for one person, despite the room being for two. Take your own if you do not want to run out! Similarly, whilst towels were white, fluffy, clean and changed daily, they were the bare minimum number. I did not have any of the problems at breakfast that other reviewers had mentioned. We ate at 0730 to 0830 and there were plenty of tables available and the buffet was always amply refreshed. The quality of the breakfast was very good, with plenty of choice unless you wanted pancakes or waffles as they are missing from the menu. I had the made to order breakfast omelette one day and can recommend it if you would like something different for a change. We ordered cappuccino coffee each morning, the first two mornings we had to reject it (too cold first day, tasted powdery second day), but that was the only problem we had. All of the staff from front desk to cleaners were helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. The hotel does itself a dis-service by cutting down on the small things that cost very little, like toiletries, which reduces the feeling of luxury that would otherwise be felt.

Room Tip: Request a room away from air conditioners

We arrived at this hotel after changing hotels at last minute. When we arrived at the hotel and the receptionist was extremelly helpful and polite. He took the time to talk to us and sort out a lovely room. We stayed at this hotel for 3 days, all stay were so helpful nothing was too much trouble. The room was lovely, it was very spacious, clean, comfortable and everything in it that you could possible need. It make our weekend very special and we enjoyed every minute. The breakfast was lovely, fresh and plenty choice. We had an evening meal in the bar area and also room service and both times the food was amazing. It was a great location, well priced, the staff are a credit to the hotel. Would defo recommend.

Apologies for the pun!

In summary the Stratford is an ok hotel that has the potential to be excellent. Certainly all the staff we met were fantastic and the bedrooms hold all you need for a short hotel stay. Breakfast was buffet style and again had all you'd need to set you up for a days sightseeing (or work for that matter). Would I recommend it? - Yes.

The hotel is well situated between the railway station (3 min walk) and riverside (10 min walk), it has a small landscaped garden and outside seating area (if you don't mind the traffic streaming by) and a car park (at a charge of £5 a day). We were at the hotel for a get-together with friends on the DB&B Romance Package. Unfortunately we suffered a few minor problems during our stay which, if taken in isolation, would have had no impact, but started to mount up as the weekend progressed. The rest of the review is really aimed at the hotel management but others may find of interest.

We arrived to find our room was at the back of the hotel with a view to the adjacent roof line, car park and rear security barrier. The window (dormer type) was small, barely opened (security catch) and was covered in a grubby curtain. With so little natural light and a sloping ceiling / roof it was a shame that the interior was decorated in such dark colours as it gave the room a dim and dingy feel. Given the amount of task and supplementary lighting in the room I guess the hotel have realised this already, but even with all the lights on it doesn't overcome the problem!

The room itself was pretty clean and contained all that most people would need during a hotel stay. Big bed (not that comfy), TV (although a little small for a room as long as this one - room 328 by the way), Tea and Coffee, Fridge, Water (although only sparkling for some reason), iron / ironing board, plenty of drawers and (just about) sufficient hanging space), occasional table and two arm chairs (although situated under the reduced ceiling height area) and fully equipped bathroom with two basins (although the heated element of the anti-mist mirror was between both and only ok if you're over 5' tall) - the bathroom has no natural light.

The small issues we faced: on arrival condensation from the champagne bucket had covered the night stand and soaked into the bed. To prevent further damage I moved the unit away and found two old bottle tops a hair grip and no small amount of dust. Not something I expected in a hotel of this standing; the small window was covered by curtains that didn't abut the wall so streams of light get in either side which was very annoying early each morning (yes I appreciate the irony given my earlier comment!); the positioning of the air conditioning vent / grill meant that the cool air missed the right side of the bed and if you tried to over compensate by reducing the temperature or fan speed you still just froze the other side of the bed and the end of the room near the bathroom) - this was more of an issue because we needed to shut our window because of noise from the car park, barrier and street; the shower hose had a pin hole in it near the top so despite your best attempts to direct water where you wanted it, it had other ideas; being environmentally friendly we tend to use only the small towels and, as requested, left them in the bath to have changed so imagine my surprise when I picked up my nicely folded towel from the shelf to find it wringing wet - the mornings dirty and soaking towels had been folded up and replaced!!; Finally I was surprised to find the outside pages of my Sunday paper screwed / ripped up and with items missing from the plastic supplement bag within - I really can't believe they delivered it in that state!

Onto the food: as mentioned breakfast was buffet style and had all you will need for your day. the only comment I would make is that I assume the chef on Saturday was different to that on Sunday as items such as sausages and mushrooms could not have been more different (Saturday was better by the way); the evening food was more of an issue and in my opinion was not just about personal taste. In general food was ok, but portion size was small, food should have been delivered / served hotter and in a much more co-ordinated way. I also feel that for a hotel like this it needs to be of much better quality. The lamb on Saturday fought back and the accompanying veg was not worthy of the description. A non-descript potato and a spoon of, what I assume was ratatouille. Even my additional bowl of root vegetables, a real hit on Friday night, were soggy, barely warm and served half way through my main meal.

To end on a positive - the staff we met up with whilst we were there were all great. These that come to mind are Amy and Sam (who seem to be multi-skilled and pop up in various guises / places and the young (?) French waiter. Reception were also good.

Room Tip: High Floor - probably front of hotel better

This is a beautiful hotel, both inside and out. All of the staff were really friendly and helpful. A great location too, just a short walk into the bustling pretty town. It's a shame that the car park wasn't free for guests but as this is the only negative point, I would definitely recommend the hotel.

We came to stay for a Wolf Hall/ Bring up the Bodies double bill, and this hotel was perfectly located. They gave us the wrong room to start with (frustrating as I'd rung to check it was a twin and not a double already), but this was quickly rectified. Breakfast was fine and the friendly staff recommended some excellent restaurants for dinner. I was a little disappointed to discover that this was not the Stratford Manor (same chain) with the spa, but that was my error and not theirs. Read the small print, everybody!
