“Ruby celebrations”
Reviewed 19 October 2011

The hotel is ideally located near centre of town and other attractions such as Warwick Castle and Blenheim Palace which we enjoyed. We were celebrating our 40th anniversary and although the email I sent asking for flowers in the room was missed, the management certainly made up for this error with complimentary flowers, champagne and chocolate. All staff were very friendly and helpful and we made good use of the Bear pub within the hotel with excellent beers, wine and food. Would definitely recommend this hotel for an excellent city break

We spent 4 nights at the Swan's Nest in October 2011.
Our pre-booked room was one of the few rooms of the hotel that have windows towards a major street. So we asked for another room and were immediately given one by the friendly and competent receptionist Robert. He happens to speak five languages, among them German.
Our new room had windows towards a quiet meadow in a courtyard towards the rear of the hotel. We slept very well there except on Saturday night when we found out that the function room across the courtyard was used as a disco for a group of guests.

The hotel offers private parking, I paid 5 GBP for 4 nights which was an excellent deal.
Breakfast was excellent, the restaurant overlooks the river Avon so you can literally watch the swans go by as you sip your coffee.
The room was clean, tastefully appointed and offered reasonable space for two adults.
The members of the staff are generally very friendly, helpful and competent. The hotel belongs to the MacDonald hotel chain which ensures a high standard of accomodation.

The major benefit of the Swan's Nest is the excellent location. You walk across a park into the center of the city in 5 minutes, yet your location is away from the traffic and the noises of the city centre on the banks of the wonderful scenic river Avon.
On your way into town you cross the river on a bridge and you have all of Stratford to your feet: Holy Trinity Church and the Royal Shakespeare Company to your right and the town is just ahead of you.

The restaurant at the hotel is French but with the city centre just around the corner we didn't eat there. The hotel also has a pub which seemed to be a sports bar and not the ideal place for the quiet seeking guest, so we didn't go there either.
Just opposite the hotel is an excellent Thai restaurant, the Boathouse. Stratford offers a wide range of pubs and restaurants.

I would stay at the Swan's Nest again, without hesitation.

Oct 11th to 13th 2 nights stay with dinner on first night. Short walk to the river and 10 minute stroll to RSC. Our room gave us a ( restricted) view of the river and was clean and comfortable and perfect for our 2 night stay. Food .. breakfast and dinner .. in Le Bistrot Pierre was most enjoyable. No complaints and would certainly go again and recommend.

A wonderful location, right on the river with the RSC just a short walk. A delicious breakfast and evening meal. We stayed 2 nights in august in an executive suite but was disappointed with the tired looking décor, the out look over the car park and a/c units and the average room contents. However everything was clean and tidy and well stocked. The car park is a little tough to locate with the confusing council car park named the same. The staff were really helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much effort and they were fonts of knowledge for valuable information about things to see, do, eat and drink.
Apart from the room price and outlook the hotel is lovely and would stay there again.

Our stay - 24/09/11 - 25/09/11

My lovely boyfriend decided to treat me to a weekend in Stratford to go see 'A Midsummer Nights Dream' at the RSC. As part of the treat, he booked a suite at the Swan's Nest Hotel. Being nosey I checked out their website and got excited at how luxurious their suites sounded.

Upon arrival, we parked up and got our free parking validated even though we arrived 3 hours before check-in. We entered the back entrance via the car park and after a long walk through a dingy, grey corridor the lady at the reception was very pleasent and offered to take our luggage while we were at the show. Overall our first impressions of the house bar and restaurant were very good and we were looking forward to dining there in the evening. When it was time to check in fully we asked to reserve a table in the restaurant which the receptionist did and even notified us of a cancellation so we could eat earlier.

However after being handed the keys to our suite (the Bewick Suite), we were both feeling slightly underwhelmed. It was hardly the picture of luxury that the official website had painted. The decor was hugely dated (and not in a "17th Century" way - try 1970s). It was very brown and green with plain gold curtains. It was very clean, but due to the old fashioned style it felt a bit grotty. The bathroom was nice enough but the size of the bath was what you would expect for a standard hostel. The monsoon shower was nice however. We soon discovered that some of the things advertised were not present such as complimentary water in the mini bar and the "free Wi-fi" turned out to be BT Openzone; which neither my boyfriend or I are subscribed to. Considering the high price paid (£215 for one night) for the room we were very disappointed at the lack of effort and presentation of the "luxury suite."

Despite this our evening meal was very good - their attached bar was full of non-residents watching the Rugby World Cup and it took a while to get served but this wasn't too much of a distraction. Our meal at the Bistrot Pierre (the hotel's restaurant) was great. It was reasonably priced and were pretty substantial portions. The staff once again were very polite and friendly - our waitress even said hello to us the next morning at breakfast.

After a rough night's sleep on rather stiff mattress we had a decent breakfast and went to pack our things. Upon doing so I noticed a huge tear in our quilt which had been otherwise covered over with a green throwover blanket (see picture for details). Considering the amount paid and the fact that the hotel claims to be worthy of four stars this was really the final straw. We had so far been able to overlook the trivial things missing from the website advert but for one of their top-level rooms it really isn't on. When we bought the issues up with the receptionist upon check-out we were offered a condescending apology which felt empty and as we had paid upfront online we were offered no refund, discount or compensation - they seemed more concerned with the fact that we had already paid and therefore no longer their responsibility. The money seems to be going into keeping a great bar/restaurant than actually maintaining a four-star standard. We have been in far superior two/three star hotels.

We could have understood if we had gone for a standard double room in a lower-class hotel as you usually get what you pay for. Sadly for us our otherwise lovely trip to beautiful Stratford was left soured and ended with us feeling very much cheated out of our money. We had planned on checking out the other MacDonald hotel (Alveston Manor) across the road from the Swan's Nest for our future wedding but after this we would not trust them again with a regular stay, let alone the most important day of our lives!

Room Tip: Avoid splashing out on a Luxury/Executive suite - you will be sorely disappointed.

Good - wonderful location by river, friendly service, comfortable hall and bar area. Delicious breakfast.
Not so good - bedroom we stayed in at £140 a night was tired looking and in need of redecoration . The garden in the middle of the modern quadrangle of bedrooms was not well cared for- it could have provided a lovely view.

We stayed for 3 nights in September. We upgraded to an Executive room for an additional £60 per night but what a rip off! I can't for the life of me see what was 'executive' about it. The room was clean, functional but not large or stocked with anything out of the ordinary. I at least expected a king size bed but it was just a double. The base was a very small double bolted to a single and consequently the mattress dipped into the slight gap which was uncomfortable. The hotel advertises free wifi. It's not their own wifi, but BT's Open Zone which we get free anyway with our mobile plans. There was a signal in the room but it was impossible to connect to by either our iphones or our laptop. We had to use our 3g or wait until we were out and about in Stratford. The bathroom was okay but a little dated and I had to get my husband to turn the knob on the shower each day as it had seized up due to limescale and was too stiff for me to turn. I didn't see what an ordinary room was like but I assume it couldn't be much if the upgrade we had was to go by.

Breakfast was a little chaotic. The first morning we didn't get our toast until way after our cooked breakfast and on the second morning we got our coffee and toast way before our breakfast and both were cold by the time breakfast was brought to us. Lots of people were getting the wrong order and/or were waiting for a long time. There doesn't seem to be much organisation going on. The serving staff were pleasant and rushed around - I think the problem is with the manager of the breakfast session who is clearly not up to the job. I also agree with a previous reviewer about the rude and disrespectful way a supervisor spoke to staff in the breakfast in front of diners.

The hotel car park is NOT free any more. You have to pay £5 per stay and our check in at reception was very slow but I think that was because there was a work experience girl manning the desk.

We ate a meal in the hotel's pub (The Bear) which was pleasant, but ate out in town the other days.

The hotel is situated just a couple of minutes walk over the bridge from town. It's okay but there are plenty of hotels right in Stratford which are more convenient and better value. We met up with friends and family who were staying in the Mercure Shakespeare (perfect spot), The Grosvenor and the Holiday Inn (also good locations). They all cost far less than we paid and were better located. The Holiday Inn also included a Carvery roast buffet on the first night.

Stratford itself is a lovely town and we really enjoyed it and would like to visit again and see more of the surrounding area. Would we stay in the Swan's Nest again? A resounding NO. I would recommend the Mercure Shakespeare, followed by either the Grosvenor or Holiday Inn.

Room Tip: Don't choose a ground floor room. You can't open the windows because of traffic noise and p...
