We booked the Swan's Nest via booking.com 7 months ahead of our trip to Stratford Upon Avon. At £135 per night (B + B) it is not great value for money, but superbly located for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre (the reason for our visit) and within walking distance of most of the town's other attractions.

On arrival the reception manager was unable to trace our booking (although we had a printout from the booking.com website with a booking reference). She said that the hotel usually keeps a few rooms available for Friday and Saturday nights 'just in case' - which was good news for us. We had given our credit card details to pay (as required) on booking but the hotel had not received payment. It turned out that our card had not been debited.

The reception manager did not insist on payment 'up front' and said that when she had contacted booking.com after the weekend she would charge our card only if they had not already done so. A few days later she mailed us a copy of the credit card receipt after she had taken payment.

Our room was large and comfortable, although the view from the window was of a nondescript building across a flat roof. We found on returning at 11.00 pm that a party (complete with a band) was taking place below our room. Thankfully the music stopped at midnight.

Breakfast was undistinguished - we both had kippers, which turned out to be of the 'boil in the bag' variety and it was difficult to distinguish the casually-dressed waiting staff (who had to be asked for each cup of tea or coffee - no pots were left on the table) from the guests because of the lack of uniforms. Would we stay here again? Regrettably, despite the excellent reception manager, not at this price!

We went for a Leisure Weekend using Tesco Vouchers which makes it very reasonable. The location was lovely and we had a river view which few rooms seem to offer. (Though there was a building in the way, but still better than nothing). On arrival there were no guest parking spaces but the parking warden moved his car so we could put ours in his spot which was lucky. We didn't have to pay £5 as some people are saying because the hotel give you a ticket to put in the window. Reception were efficient and we turned down an offer to carry our luggage. Our room was on the first floor. It was a large with a separate seating area though an archway with a lovely sofa and coffee table. Nice if you wanted to spend more time in your room. The bathroom was not as great as some but functional. Only downside of our room was that before we could enjoy the river view we had to look past two rather large vents of some type. I would not have wanted to risk opening the windows to find out what they were venting! However it was chilly so the air con stayed on. The only other downside was that there was a strange intermittent whining noise much like a huge mosquito. We could have let this spoil our stay if we had chosen to but instead reported it to reception when we left.

|We dined at the Bistro which was a big mistake - although the food was nice it was packed with parties of all sizes and ages - not ideal for an anniversary dinner. If you're looking for a romantic meal go somewhere else. Breakfast was the usual Macdonald hotel menu but the fresh fruit/pastires etc were out in the reception area on the first morning which we found quite strange. Service was as other reviewers have said, hurried with a lack of attention to detail - the chef had a problem with poached eggs which were served hard.

Location wise it was ideal just a stones throw from everything. We visited to The Bear pub attached to the hotel which you can enter via reception. Don't let you put this off though because it is not noisy or intrusive. It is a good place to go if there is a sporting event on while you're there and you like to watch it with a friendly crowd rather than alone in your room.

If you are looking for a romantic weekend you are better off going to The Complete Angler at Marlow or the Randolph in Oxford but Stratford Upon Avon has a lot to offer.

Room Tip: Lots of rooms on the lower floor appear to overlook the car park so I would ask for one on the first floor preferably with a river view.

I stayed here with some of my old girlfriends and after reading some of the reviews was not looking forward to it. But it was fine. The parking was no problem, I have a large car and was worried that I might not be able to park it, but it was no problem at all (although having to pay £5 to park when I was a guest at the hotel was not great). The room was clean and if I had to criticise I could say it was too warm, nice towels and really helpful staff. The breakfast was fine - but it was close enought to walk into Stratford and go to one of the many tea shops for breakfast if you didn't want to pay £17.50. I wouldn't have a problem going back - it did what it said on the packet!

The hotel was chosen for us by virtue of it being a venue for a re-union, however I certainly hope we're not returning as it was not good value. The parking is chaotic at best it certainly isn't car friendly. Having sat down for dinner, it was a good 30 minutes before the first course was served(all pre selected by the guests), the reason being that we were in competition with another party! why then weren't more staff employed to prevent this? As for breakfast, we did manage to get served in reasonable time, but 4 people sat next to us who had been in before us, were not impressed when our brakfast arrived before theirs!
Overall, this hotel isn't one I would stay at again.

We chose the Swan's nest because of its location and value for money-also the on site parking. We had a clean and quiet room in the extended part of the hotel. The breakfast was lovely with lots of choice, fresh fruit etc. The staff were all friendly. It is a perfect location for a couple of days walking around the shops and exploring Stratford. Would stay at the hotel again. Only downside was no bath.
