Stayed just a couple of nights for an anniversary break. The welcome we recieved was warm and friendly. When I requested a room change ,due to personal preference, nothing was too much trouble. The room was clean ,spacious and had plenty of facilties, fridge, hairdryer, tea making facilities but no coffee. The bathroom was clean but could have done with updating ,regrouting !. The shower did not work properly and the screen was too small and the seals worn so consequently the bathroom floor was flooded after every use. The bed was extremely uncomfortable, new mattress needed ,but the feather pillows were a lovely luxury. The full English breakfast was small and the spicy sausage far too overpowering for a breakfast dish [personal choice ] but the buffet had plenty of choices and was well stocked .
The bar was a lovely cosy place to have a drink and chat .
The staff were all very friendly and helpful and could not do enough for you.The morning staff in the dining room were always very busy and worked exceptionally hard to please everyone, they were all very pleasant and friendly.Special mention to Kim and Jordan who were so lovely and chatty and made you feel very welcome and comfortable. Overall pleasant stay and use of spa facilities at Alvaston Manor was a great bonus which helped to make the stay more enjoyable .

Stayed for a social weekend with friends (21 of us), all of whom spend a lot of time in hotels and have realistic expectations of them - unlike some others who have posted reviews recently I suggest. We experienced pleasant and efficient service at check-in and check-out and especially for dinner in a private room on Saturday evening, when the food was excellent for the price. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and £5 per stay for parking seems very reasonable given the location. Food service at Saturday lunchtime in the Bear was a bit slow, but it was a very busy time and the range of real ales was most welcome. This is not an 'olde worlde' hotel, nor are the large extensions particularly attractive, but the guest experience is just fine. I would certainly stay here again.

Ten of us, all family members, stayed at Swan's Nest, nights of 18th thru 20th October, to attend a wedding at the RSC with the reception at this hotel. A friendly welcome from our receptionist as she booked us into rooms 6, 19, 20, 33 and 35 - all identical. We could not fault our rooms. Clean, reasonably spacious, comfortable beds with soft pillows and really large soft towels in modern, well stocked bathrooms.. Tea and coffee making facilities and bottled water provided with the addition of fresh milk and ice on demand. An iron and ironing board, so useful for pressing our party clothes. What more does one want? Some of us had opted to have breakfasts, which were disappointing. Cold plates meant that one's cooked breakfast was luke warm by the time it arrived. However the staff were attentive. None of us ate dinner in the restaurant, so can't comment. The wedding reception in the Garden Suite was excellent. Friends of the happy couple had spent the evening before decorated the function room to a special theme and the table settings were fantastic. With eleven tables of ten people, it was amazing that the three course meal was served so equally. Food was hot when it arrived. Wine was offered as soon as a glass emptied. Debris speedily removed. Changing the room from dining to disco for the evening took a very short while. No complaints from the staff when the timetable for the afternoon and evening overran. Having read some reports that the hotel was in need of refurbishment, I can only say that the outside windowsills did look sad, but who cares - it's what goes on inside that matters. If you want a pleasant hotel in a wonderful location, right on the edge of everything Stratford on Avon has to offer, then give this one a try. We had a great time and would love to do it again.

Room Tip: We had rooms on the ground floor and two on the upper floor - all slept well.

Brilliant location, room was nice and big, comfortable, clean and good quality. We got the room at a discounted rate so was great value for money as really felt like we had got a bargain. If we go back to Stratford upon Avon will without a doubt go back.

I was very surprised that this has been given a 4 star rating (as per macdonald hotels website) following a very average stay in a fairly run down, tired hotel that looks like it had seen better days. Residents were requested to spend a non refundable £5 on car parking which we found a little exorbitant. Judging from the website, we were in for a treat however it failed to deliver to expectations.

Prior to arrival i called the Spa to book treatments. The call that the booking form noted, kept ringing out (not sure what THAT number was!). Once finding the correct number via the website (0844 not 01789), i spoke to a very abrupt receptionist who did not LISTEN to my experience of trying to get through and proceeded to tell me i couldn't have been calling the Spa as there was 2 reception staff on (which was clearly the case doh!). This was irritating and I suggest this receptionist is given training in how to communicate with potential customers!! I did not feel comfortable to attend a treatment as a result. (BTW, The Spa is across the road from this hotel in a sister hotel)

On arrival we were met by an empty reception desk and the receptionist (lone working) was on the phone for over 10 minutes! In fairness, she was trying to assist some guests and I was no way concerned about her approach, in fact she was very apologetic & helpful. What was concerning to us, were the amount of staff milling around who were in no position to help her or us!

In all the room was a basic executive suite which was quite soulless and very cold during the night. The bed was utterly crippling and if it wasn't for the amount of cocktails sunk in the Encore (the Bear looked rough n' ready) and the belly full of delicious food served at Carluccios (the Bristro downstairs was over subscribed); we would have have had a restless night! Breakfast was adequate but not commensurate to a 4 star hotel. The staff were genuinely keen to please and this upgraded my 2 point rating to 3.

If you want a good location for the attractions, then this hotel is sufficient however for what you pay I would suggest you get a deal on lastminute.com to stay here so not to feel robbed. From a business point of view, hotel management need to be concerned and i wish i had filled in a feedback card now. A very mediocre experience!

Room Tip: shop around!

The whole set up is around a pub called" the bear" where the locals come to watch tv and drink.
Very difficult to get a table just after 6 pm and service is the worst I have ever experienced.
Expect an hour waiting time for your food or an order completely forgotten for your food with no excuses for it being late.
The lobby was uninviting and shabby, used by the pub guest to drink and get merry.
Staff hanging out the door having a fag while guests waited or while walking past.
I had spotted dirt that was left over 5 days proving that the common areas were not vacuumed all week.
The same is true of the rooms. We did not stop scratching all week because of the dirt.
On top of that they are charging £3 if you pay by credit card !
WI-fI is extra as they only have BT installed.
Maybe "the bear" is referring to the bare service ?
Avoid this hotel and book another that has better standards of cleanliness.

Oh dear where do I begin with this one!!!! Old, tired and smelled like a run down nursing home. Room was small and still bore the remnants of previous guests. Bed was small and hard, safe didn't work and the previous occupants left a note saying the kettle didn't work. The window sill was rotting and the walls grubby. Breakfast wasn't great but service itself was good and they made a great cup of tea. Parking was an extra $5 pounds per night. On the plus side it was in a good location. All in all I would suggest you find somewhere else to stay!
