“Ideal for RSC Stratford”
Reviewed 29 May 2013

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights(May BH weekend). It is a perfect loctaion for a visit to Stratford, just across the river from the RSC theatre. The bedrooms were very clean and comfortable. Our room overlooked the courtyard and only had a shower. If you want to dine at the restuarant it's advisable to book as we had to wait for a table to become available. The beer garden is across the road, but has excellent views of the river and we spent a happy hour watching the boats. Breakfast was adequate, but the young staff are lacking in the required skills to provide a good service. On each occasion we received our food before the drinks as the staff had to be reminded that we required tea!

If it is just accommodation you seek then look no further. The rooms are well equipped, although certainly not spacious. The beds are very comfortable and if you face the river the rooms are also quiet. Some rooms have only a shower and do not have a bath so it's worth checking when you book.
Be aware that there is a charge to park your car, unusual we thought. A 'voluntary donation' to charity is added to the bill unless you ask for it to be removed.
The only residents 'lounge' is adjacent to the reception area and it is too small for a hotel of this size as there is seating for perhaps 10 - 15 at best.
The large, modern, featureless and charmless hotel building may have been designed by someone who does a lot of work for the Russian prison service. It has been been tacked onto what was once a pub, now the bar, and that is run by a different company that shares the site. The bar operation is busy and we found it rather noisy.
The bogus French Bistro produces indifferent food on cold plates. I endorse the review that termed it 'pretentious'. 'Burger du Maison' is one dish on offer with a helpful description in English below.
Outside the Bistro is a smart sign that assures customers that the Chef spends time in France seeking out new dishes and sourcing ingredients. He might do better to stay at home.
In summary, stay here but eat somewhere else - Stratford spoils you for choice.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a bath facing the river and not too far from reception.

My wife and I stayed at the Swan's Nest for two nights (Sunday 19th and Monday 20th May) combining a visit to the theatre with my wife seeing an old friend that lives in Stratford.
Our room had an additional sitting area overlooking the gardens and a very nice shower.
The hotel bar is more like a pub and can get crowded in the evenings at weekends, but much quieter on weekday evenings. Bar food is good and drinks are more pub prices than hotel prices.
Having read a lot of negative reviews of this hotel we were rather aprehensive but can honestly say we had no complaints at all.
An oft repeated complaint is that the hotel entrance is unattractive. What do you expect for the back door from the car park? If you want to lug your bags round to the nice wooden revolving door at the front you can, but what's the point.
Excellent breakfast in the Bistro.
The play was good too. Titus Andronicus. A tragedy so dark it came out the other side and became a black comedy. Several of the cast were breakfasting at the Swan's Nest the morning after we saw the play. Possibly a plus if you're a starstruck type.

Stayed at this hotel last Thursday for a Team build event. The location is fantastic and definately the selling point.

The outside of the building looks tired and needs re-vamping, however inside was ok. The bedroom was a great size, but the bathroom needed updating.

We ate in the restaurant and I agree the menu is very pretentious but everyone still seemed happy witht heir food. However I have to say the service was very good at all times, and nothing was too much trouble.

Stayed here for a RSC performance. The location is great, and its a very short and scenic walk into town.
The car park is handy too.
It could do with a bit of a polish. It looks a bit tired - not offensive, just a bit worn out. In view of this, I think that the prices are a little steep for what is on offer.

This is my hotel of choice when I stay in Stratford. I like the Mcdonalds range of hotels, with their friendly service, comfortable rooms and reasonable prices. The Swans Nest benefits from having a local bar with guest ales, as well as the bistro, where unlike a previous review I have always found it to be pleasant, friendly with good food and wine. I have stayed here over 20 times and will continue to come back. I am grateful to Robert and the staff for their warm and chatty manner. The hotel can get busy with tourists. I use it for business stop overs and also the occasional leisure trip. Great for the River, RSC, eating and the bar. You also have access to the gym, pool and spa at the sister hotel The Alverston Manor. Car parking is free to guests. There is a £2 credit card charge, but you can always use a debit card.

Room Tip: Room 40 is a lovely feature room with super king bed, tub and shower. Bed was very comfy.

This hotel promises much but delivers little. items which are normally free are charged - car parking, use of credit card. Service in the dining room was good but the food was poor and served on cold plates. We were not tempted to dine again after the first evening. The pseudo-French menu was ridiculous and the script difficult to read. Breakfast was particularly poor e.g. The "Loch Fyne" kippers were boil-in-the-bag kipper fillets! The air conditioning failed and was not fixed before our departure. A most disappointing experience.
